Just found out that a young person who I used to coach chess to has a debilitating form of chronic fatigue and is bedridden, light and noise sensitive. They must only be in their early 20s, it is very sad.
A bright note in the sad story is that a friend from the chess world would visit in hospital regularly spending hours at a time in a room where the only communication was silent.
Unfortunately, the visits stopped after hospital discharge, as distance was an issue.
Be kind people, you never know what tomorrow has in store for you 🙂

My head is in a weird limbo zone after spending a long weekend away playing chess. I feel strangely hungover and mentally sluggish. Today will be a day of rest, recovery and getting my shit back together.
On a bright note, I won the tournament scoring five wins and one draw. I was a bit fortunate in some games, but played pretty well generally.

While walking at Lake St Clair National Park, we saw masses of coral lichen just covering ground areas. Apparently, it thrives on ground where dead or dying buttongrass can be found.
We were disappointed to miss the buttongrass but thrilled to see so much lichen.

Lake St Clair is the deepest lake in Australia, a glacial lake situated in the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It's one end of the 6-day Overland Track, and there are loads of short walks. A beautiful place to relax, chill out and discover nature's joys.

I tried to coincide my trip to the Tessellated Pavement with low tide, to get the best access to the rocks. It was a very low tide, which made nearby Dunalley Bay look pretty stunning. This was going to be my silent Sunday picture, but my feed could do with some quieting at the moment.

Yesterday at the Tessellated Pavement we were lucky to spot a fossil in the rocks. The rocks in this area aren't good for finding the oldest fossils. Tasmania has some fossils dating back 800 million years (sorry if I have any creationists in my followers). This is possibly a trace fossil of a bivalve mollusc and will date to between 60 million and 160 million years.
By the way, I'm no expert, so if anyone knows better, I am happy to learn 🙂

Today I daytripped to Eaglehawk Neck to see some of Tasmania's great coastline. There are amazing cliffs, arches, blowholes etc, but the stand out is definitely the Tessellated Pavement. This is a rock formation created naturally by geological fracturing and erosion, and Tasmania's tessellated pavement is the best known in the World.

When in flower, the narrow leaved paperbark looks like it is full of fluffy, white flowers. But up close, the flowers are beautiful, resembling ice, or snow.

Both our cats were unwanted before we brought them into our family. Candy, the black and white is nearly 17 years old, while Alice, the tortoiseshell has not long turned 16. They have been best friends, sisters, and partners in mischief for over 15 years.

Yesterday's walk was a good one for birds. We were buzzed around by a Grey Fantail, serenaded by a Butcherbird, followed and spied on by a pair of Green Rosellas, disturbed a White Faced Heron, some Honeyeaters and a Dusky Robin. But the star was a Superb Fairy Wren who stayed still long enough to get a halfway decent photo 🙂

We put cats in boarding for a couple of days so as not to stress them (or lose them) during our move. We picked them up yesterday afternoon and after some complaints and some exploring they have both settled down.

One of my students just phoned me to say he'd won his age group chess Tasmanian State Championship. He just wanted to thank me for helping him reach the level needed to win.

In the past 3 years, the International Chess Federation, FIDE, has:
- allowed Russian players to participate in events under as long as they don't use the Russian flag.
- banned trans players from competing
- Ignored calls for disciplinary actions against a player hit a female photojournalist.
- When the same player was playing in another event, he stalked and harassed another young woman. This time FIDE imposed sanctions which amounted to a couple months ban and a good behaviour bond.
- intervened when a privately run tournament wanted Israeli players to participate without using their national flag. The event in the Basque region comes in the wake of protests against the Israeli cycling team in the Vuelta.
So the governing body of chess is showing itself to be: Anti-trans, anti-women, anti-LGBT+, pro-Russian, pro-Israeli, and therefore, pro-genocide.

Blimey. We just sold our house after buying a smaller one a couple days back.

When I gave up smoking about 15 years ago I substituted reading. I probably read 30-50 novels a year, 5-10 chess books, and a bunch of articles.
Fiction genres of all types. Anything goes

Three years ago we moved to a dump of a house in Tasmania. We have worked to make it a happy home, but we decided it was too big for us, so we're downsizing.
Today we bought a unit in a suburb of Launceston and have two months to sell this house with inspections due to start this Saturday.
