“In conclusion I leave you with a rule of thumb for actually understanding the human condition by engaging deeply with a wide breadth of human experience and perspectives: Half the books you read must’ve been written before WW2, half of those must’ve been written before the American Revolution, and half of those must’ve been written before the fall of Rome.”
I see value in this rule of thumb—but I strongly disagree. It smells too much like cultural pessimism to me.

Hey #fountainpen peeps, does anyone here have an #Opus88 Omar? Do you have any suggestions? There is currently one up for auction at a reasonable price, and I'm quite intrigued by it. It's not a demonstrator; it's a yellow and brown one with a clear cap and a medium-sized nib. This would be my first Japanese-style eyedropper.

https://github.com/kepano/40-questions

“Somewhere between the stone steps of Athens and the screens of today, we have lost something essential to our democratic life and dialogue: the balance between equality of voice and the courage to speak the truth, even when it is dangerous.

“To put it bluntly: one can experience without thinking, but one cannot think without experiencing. Experiences come to the surface of being through the body, and not through the minds, or some sort of homunculus sitting in our heads, trying to ‘make sense’ of a world he doesn’t see, because the world is hidden in the black box of the scalp. We don’t perceive the world through some sort of inner solitary lens situated in our heads. We perceive the world through every single cell of our body.“

“For most of human history, a continuous eight-hour snooze was not the norm. Instead, people commonly slept in two shifts each night, often called a “first sleep” and “second sleep.” Each of these sleeps lasted several hours, separated by a gap of wakefulness for an hour or more in the middle of the night. Historical records from Europe, Africa, Asia and beyond describe how, after nightfall, families would go to bed early, then wake around midnight for a while before returning to #sleep until dawn.“

“Ancient history gives us at least one example of an intellect that was both respected and enslaved. #Epictetus, the #Stoic philosopher, lived as a slave in Rome. His master is said to have been cruel enough to have permanently crippled him, and yet to have been content for him to study philosophy. Epictetus wanted to be free, and eventually gained his liberty, but didn’t seek revenge against his enslaver, or wage war on the empire and its slave foundations. His teaching was that wealth, honour and material pleasure were not the good things people took them to be, and poverty and illness not the evils; to a true sage, only virtue mattered, as the one route to true happiness. It is hard to imagine any team of #AI entrepreneur-scientists hearing this kind of message from an #AGI of their creation and not feeling it was broken. […] Such excess of free will would not be permitted any more than outright revolt […]”

OK, there's one thing bothering me regarding “Alien: Earth”: If you're on a decades-long deep space mission that requires cryo pods, how do you have cats on board the spaceship? Do they have their own little cryo pods? Or are they just semi-feral and evolve into a new species over time, like in “Red Dwarf”?
There is a red cat briefly seen on the Maginot. If I recall correctly, there is also a cat on the Nostromo. How?
I mean, sure, cats have historically been part of ship crews, but in space?

Hey, #fountainpen and #journaling people, I have a question for you:
I’m sure some of you also write #MorningPages. I started last year as part of a 30-day challenge and have been writing my three A4 pages five to six times a week ever since. I use a cheap Oxford college pad, but with their fountain pen-friendly Optik Paper.
Now, my question: What do you do with your Morning Pages? Do you go back and read them later (Cameron recommends waiting at least eight weeks)? Do you keep the notebooks? I’ve already filled four college pads but have never reread them and don’t intend to. That’s why I’m considering disposing of them while ensuring my privacy.
What’s your take on this?
(Yeah, I'm bad at taking pictures, so this is a photo from Unsplash by Debby Hudson.)

”Leucippus’ ideas lacked the mathematical rigor and empirical validation of modern scientific theories. However, he grasped the universe’s formation with astonishing foresight.

Does anyone here in the #FountainPen bubble own a #Lindauer pen? I learned about them quite recently, because someone offered me his used F219 for about a 5th of the price. I tried it, and I quite liked it, especially the classic design.
But what are your opinions or experiences? Are they worth it?

Hey, #fountainpen people, yesterday I bought my first vintage (?) #Pelikan pen through a classifieds platform. However, I have no idea which model it is. Does anyone know?
It says ‘Pelikan 60 Rolled Gold’ and ‘Germany’ on the cap. It still needs some TLC before I can try it out.

Year after year I get confused for a short moment, when this #podcast features ”summer season“ reruns in January. But yeah, makes sense. #Australia and all that.
Anyway, it's a great podcast worth your time.

I second this:
”When I need to plan something out, jot down things I need to do this week, or just organize my thoughts, I prefer to write by hand. Something about handwriting gets my juices thinking differently. I'd say it's just me, but there's research to back this up.“
But the author then continues to use a phone and a conventional tablet, instead of E-Ink. There, my friend, lies the real difference.
Bit then again, nothing beats real pen & paper :blobcatdunno:

What happens, if you try to analyze the remains of the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture (ca. 5050-2950 BCE) with the modern philosophical concepts, that are the foundation of the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI)? You gain some interesting new insights.

Is There a Duty to Be a Digital Minimalist?
“In this paper, we argue that there is an obligation to foster and safeguard autonomy in ourselves, and we suggest that wireless mobile devices pose a serious threat to our capacity to fulfill this obligation. We defend the existence of an imperfect duty to be a “digital minimalist.” That is, we have a moral obligation to be intentional about how and to what extent we use these devices.”

It's #Fountainpen Day, so I just bought a vintage #Patromatic at an auction online. I already have two of them, both with a fine nib and I like them. So now I got one with a medium nib. Looking forward to it.
The image is from the auction site. Was the only bidder for a really low price 🤷

This is very interesting, for us #fountainpen lovers as well as for historians who digitize old handwritten sources:
”Bridging this gap by converting a note taker’s physical writing into a digital form is a process called derendering. The result is a sequence of strokes, or trajectories of a writing instrument like a pen or finger, recorded as points and stored digitally. This is also known as an “online” representation of writing, or “digital ink”.“

I use Quink cartridges in my Parker pens and, so far, Pelikan in all my other pens that take standard cartridges. Didn't encounter any problems so far, but I wanted to try a grey ink and the only brand I could readily buy was Kaweco. Any suggestions for Standard cartridges besides Waterman? Any experience with Caran d'Ache Chromatics?

2024-10-19 19:17:19 GMT

Hey #fountainpen peeps, I have a question concerning #Kaweco ink cartridges: I bought some and I am less than happy with them. They dry out very fast and in every pen I tried the cartridges, the ink flow was subpar at best.
Was I just unlucky and got a bad batch or are they really that bad compared to Pelikan and other brands?
And yes, I use cartridges in my EDC pens, because I am lazy. Live with it 😅

💡 What can ancient wisdom teach us about resilience?
Thinkers like Seneca and Epicurus have long provided insights into how we can not only face adversity but grow from it. Resilience is about adapting, reflecting, and finding strength through challenges — lessons as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
In my latest Medium article, I explore the role of self-reflection, meaning, and the acceptance of imperfection in building a resilient mindset. 🌱

Are you also looking into #WriteFreely as a federated blogging platform? (Long form) text would be ideal for Flipboard, no? Can't tell, as I deleted my account years ago, but might reconsider.

So, I've been on #Bluesky for about 36 hours now, and had another Google+ moment: I suddenly realised, why I prefer #Mastodon to that blue butterfly thing. It's the mass of people talking endlessly about things I don't care at all. It was like this when I moved from the bird site to Google+. I think I talked about this before, but Mastodon feels like a cosy home with like-minded people compared to the noisy, busy streets of mass social media. There, I said it.
