Last Notes npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub1eav…g6f3 Mmmmh. That sounds delicious! npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub1se6…cmph If farmers were farming to feed us... Densely populated Germany is the fifth biggest exporter of agricultural produce in the world! We use heavily subsidised produce to flood overseas markets. 2/3 of farms are livestock farms. They import vast amounts of soy and grain from e.g. Brazil accelerating deforestation. ~2/3 of Germany is used for farming. According to a study by the Boston Consulting Group a couple of years ago, agriculture adds 20 billion € to German GDP - with external costs in excess of 80 billions. These costs are e.g. highly nitrogen contaminated groundwater. This contamination is one of the reasons that the EU, has started infringement proceedings against Germany. The not sufficient allocation of land for conversation is another. Last year, German farmers had a record year with doubled profits. I don't know about France, but I expect a similar situation. Everyone in Germany is drowning in red tape. In my industry, the compulsory documentation for a small business as mine is basically the same as for an international corporation. This hits every small business - not just farmers. They don't have a heavier burden then the rest of us. However, their actions on 2/3 of our land are possibly damaging beyond the borders of this country. So their businesses need control and documentation. I agree with everything @npub1lce…330w said as well. npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten You are right @npub1eav…g6f3 the two seas have a moderating effect in Schleswig-Holstein (the northernmost state of Germany). However, unlike e.g. Italy there are no mountains stopping cold polar winds getting down here. So usually it's not that cold, but with the right winds we got down to -15°C (5F) a few days ago. The lowest temperature in the greenhouse in recent days was -7°C (19F). During the day it heated up to 10°C (50F). And that is the tricky part for the plants. Just a week ago we had 10°C (50F) outside. There is no consistent cold winter temperature any more. With 10 or even 15°C (50-59F) sometimes in January/February, plants start shooting and get killed by -10°C in March/April. So in some way our growing zone became milder like yours, but the cold snaps are the tricky part. #ClimateDiary npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub1eav…g6f3 The last ice age also left our state with its special geology. In a small strip of sometimes just 30+ kilometres between Baltic Sea and North Sea there are three distinct soil formations left by the glaciers. Fertile, flat marshes in the west, fertile hills with clay soil in the east and not very fertile sand areas in between. When we bought our house, we were glad to move from the sand in the middle to the hills in the east. Turned out though, that the most western parts of the hills are still covered by sandy soil. Well... 🙂 #NoDig and #DeepMulch with #compost makes the difference. edit: added a forgotten word npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub1eav…g6f3 Nice salsify. Speaks for your soil, that you managed to get them out in one piece. That must have been a nice meal! npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub13ru…67kn I've just checked and Gus' Cafe apparently still exists: https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6441845/geocon-plans-to-demolish-gus-cafe/ https://www.opentable.com.au/r/gus-place-canberra Still, I reckon it's funny that coffee culture did a detour through Australia to come back to Europe. Let's thank you guys for that anyway! Have some nice holidays (off work I hope)! npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub1f4q…dmpy That sounds like a lovely project! Hawthorn apparently is one of the best trees/shrubs to support many species - flowers, berries and protection. Having sad that, I should stress that I hate doing maintenance on hawthorn hedges. The thorns penetrate all sorts of protective gloves and wounds easily get inflamed. If you're looking for something evergreen, I'd plant yew (female and male plants). Birds love the berries. Greenfinches and lesser whitethroat regularly nest in our yew hedges. Make sure to wear gloves and goggles when trimming as everything about yew is poisonous. Our mixed hedge consisting of cherry, oak, hawthorn, blackthorn, rowan, rosa rugosa, hazel and some more species is very popular with all wildlife. It needs some maintenance though. Good luck with the hedge and plenty of visitors! #gardening #wildlife npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten Rote-Beete-Pastinaken-Gratin mit Salat Geschmackswertung: Hier kommen zwei meiner Lieblingsgerichte zusammen: Der super-leckere Querbeetsalat und ein Gratin von Ro… https://feinschmeckergarten.de/index.php/2017/09/11/rote-beete-pastinaken-gratin-mit-salat/ https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/365/301/690/581/053/original/4f7e8e7d931ddc61.jpg https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/365/301/745/615/217/original/3e8631776aefb3bb.jpg https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/365/301/786/514/544/original/b1a2fbdb295deecd.jpg https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/365/301/838/635/815/original/abf07cac0838b5a1.jpg npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten Thanks @npub1eav…g6f3 What I call the market garden was our solutions for "too little space for all the veg that occupies a bed for a long time". So our friends provided the land on their small hold and I do most of the gardening in return. This means, veg that doesn't need my constant attention is a few km away. The stuff with more need for tlc is close at the house. We are very lucky to have these opportunities. All the best for your season, too! npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten There was not much time for the #MarketGarden recently. There is still more than weeds to find. 🙂 However, the sweetcorn and courgettes needed to be cleared out. If I were a commercial producer, many of the beds would have already been cleared and replanted. But we run the operation just for two families and friends. After a very long day, the car was full of produce (too much for bike and trailer). Tomorrow is open day in our private #NoDig #garden. Better get a nap. 😴 https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/155/513/268/857/636/original/40531ee90145589c.jpg https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/155/515/100/052/559/original/f3e070afc0e5dc51.jpg https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/155/515/955/514/629/original/d7b75ba539400341.jpg https://regenerate.s3proxy.de/media_attachments/files/111/155/516/861/779/650/original/c6749a2d0ebcf8b7.jpg npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten #ClimateDiary #gardening Just watched Landward and learned, that #BlackCurrants need 2,000 h of below 7°C to develop a good crop with uniform ripening. This is a problem for farmers in Scotland today as it's not cold enough any more - in Scotland! Similar applies to #apples and 1,000 #ChillingHours below 6°C. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/feb/11/climate-breakdown-british-apples-die-out npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub1r3u…srva @npub1ads…sg7a Could it be related to humidity? The #vanilla in our bathroom just does well when I spray it with water several times a day. So there is an actual correlation between my eagerness and the growth of the poor thing. I bought the vine with two shoots of ~2 leaves each about a couple of years ago. Now it's almost 50cm / 20" long.Well, I guess the first harvest will still take some time... npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten Love your enthusiasm for all related to @npub1se6…cmph However, not all ecosystems love earthworms and they are reported to be a destructive force in some of them: e.g. https://twin-cities.umn.edu/news-events/global-earthworm-invasion https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10530-017-1642-7 https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2656.12746 @npub1xwc…ze8u npub1kd70t4ahav4r8q932xaspz7ef7n5nkkejhwh2n29wremultg4u6sayt6hy Feinschmeckergarten @npub18lc…r7c7 We had some Chioggia the size of large oranges, that were still perfectly tender. Large golf ball size is probably on the safe side. For the time, my experience says just before you want to use them, is the best time for picking. That keeps the foliage fresh, too. https://feinschmeckergarten.de/index.php/2023/07/09/dreierlei-von-roter-beete/
