good point. Economic theories that have false assumptions about humans in meatspace could very well be true about humans in cyberspace. So you’re saying that relays provide a public good, and relays engage in competition because users can switch relays if one underperforms (by slow latency or by not implementing NIPs). Question is: is a relay like a community? Does the model necessitate that people belong to a single community or can people belong to multiple communities?

I think it will be relay proxies, or relay relayers. Relays “relayers” will connect to all relays, store a local database cache. On our phones, we connect to one or two relay relayers. This will save bandwidth (only get one version of events, not events from every relay), process stats, and most importantly, run centralized ML algorithms on the cache to filter spam and algorithmically boost posts. Relay relayers will also engage in censorship (the “good” kind), but the main data layer will be uncensored and always available to everyone.

Micropayments transfer value from one person to *another person*. Proof of work transfer value from one person to a *virtual/digital entity* via energy. From the perspective of the poster/sender, they look similar. From the perspective of the relay/receiver, it is entirely different. For micropayments, the receiver makes profit. For proof of work, the receiver makes no profit. That’s the different. Whether these incentive mechanisms work for spam deterrence is another question… personally, I don’t want to do proof of work on my phone for battery life. If I were a spammer, I could rent some power computer and generate pow with ease…

Yeah I agree maybe it is cleaner to have it in a different nip. I’m not convinced that nostr pow will prevent much spam. Instead it is a signaling mechanism or a way bring important notes to the forefront. Think of like a decentralized way to determine what belongs on the “front page“ based on how much energy one is willing to spend on the note

I am merely trying to encourage people to think outside the box, because frankly, paywalls don’t work.
