Hey! Now this the perfect follow-up to my online research: a face to face with Bill in a dive bar, dim light; his weathered voice dropping truths… that's atmosphere! One drink. Maybe two. 🥃
With so much fuel added to my research after meeting Bill my rom-com about a hairdresser will turn into a gumshoe thriller. 👞

#WritersCoffeeClub ~ How do you write characters with expertise outside your own?
Hm. Research obviously comes to mind. 🍏
Online research does wonders:
~ a 44-tab browser situation
~ 39 of them are completely irrelevant
~ 4 are contradicting each other
~ 1 is a Reddit post from 2015 where someone called 'Bill_Xx' confirms your wildest guess. 🉑

Really good point, it could act as a lighthouse.
The two are deffo connected, and I also believe that art can highlight where the change is needed, where things are distorted. A vision of what is possible maybe to amend & work toward.

The text gets expanded with more subtext material that can fit into a tight flash word count.
I write about a raised eyebrow ~ the reader's imagination adds a backstory with a lot more questions than answers.

#WritersCoffeeClub ~ What are your limits for writing outside your lived experience? (race, nation, gender, etc.)
Lived experience? If all writers would pen work within their lived experience, we'd mostly have soporific memoirs, without needing sleeping pills. 💤
I write about an interesting-to-me idea, but then the reader's imagination takes over. The flash material lends well to this: I plant the seed; the reader grows a garden :booky_1:

"There is, for example, a kind of novel that focuses on one decision or one moment on which a life hinges. There is a focus on character, and a belief that character is fate. And many novels, too, are quite linear, as if the writer believes that life is like dominos—that one thing leads to another in a cause-and-effect way, and that life is progressive rather than, say, cyclical."

#ScribesAndMakers ~ How willing are you to take risks with your creative work?
I can't define risk in creative writing...

The analogy btw art and maths is apt, but it emphasises process over sensory/subjective stuff.

#ScribesAndMakers ~ Is there a work of art that you didn't like at first but came to appreciate once you understood it better?
Art isn't really about likes/dislikes, it often triggers something deeper so one relates to it beyond preference, no?
It has happened that I thought of some work of art 'Nope, not for me' and then later it just clicked massively. 💒

#WritersCoffeeClub ~ Name a non-anglophone writer who has really lit you up.
French: Jean-Paul Sartre
He confronts the abyss, the void, the sheer meaningless absurdity. Sartre set me on fire. ❤️‍🔥
Croatian: Miroslav Krleža
For the real, searing, polyphonic agony of the Austro-Hungarian empire, identity wounds, this author from Balkans. For a light, uplifting time, consider Krleža's The Croatian God Mars about WWI. .:booky_1:

#PhantastikPrompts ~ What political conditions prevail where your story takes place?
I mostly write non fiction, so it resembles a documentary. 🎋
It's a study in how a society can have both too many opinions and no new ideas at the same time. :bunhdheart:

#ScribesAndMakers ~ You are in an art contest (or collaborative game if you prefer) with someone of similar skill level. Choose your 'weapon': pencil, pen, paintbrush, digital pen, or clay.
I'd let the other person pick first. My real 'weapon' is getting to create alongside someone as rousing as they are. 💖

I have also noticed that the marketing copywriting 'how-to' templates make it bland. I strive for 'different'.
So now when you see a site that doesn't have all of this, they'll stand out even more ~ prominently.

#ScribesAndMakers ~ Is there a colour you find comforting?

"I am looking for literary fiction that knows how to use language to entangle and disable me for days on end. Deep character development, plot that takes its time to unfold, and words measured like plutonium. I want to be aware of what it means to be alive, to feel the pain and joy of another person, to look at the sky as if I am seeing it for the first time."

#WritersCoffeeClub ~ What's a service or skill you'd like to offer your fellow writers?
I can offer to apply digital marketing 'fluff' ~including website visibility ~ to amplify your digital, acoustic megaphone. 📣
You don't need to shout, you just need better acoustics.
