Last Notes npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak I wonder: will Android or iOS ever become a viable alternative to Linux phones? Apple started quick and announced the iPhone just a few months after a GNU/Linux smartphone. Google took a bit longer with Android - but now they both had nearly 20 years, and yet they're still nowhere close to being able to replace GNU/Linux phones. Will they ever up their game and finally create a device worth switching to? I have my doubts, but we’ll see. #linuxphones #linuxmobile #mobilelinux npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak hello #caturday #cats #catsofmastodon #shotonlibrem5 https://social.librem.one/system/media_attachments/files/023/813/410/original/4dec2b2f88f24e19.jpeg npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak When visiting Knyfyrtel @nprofile…jhjm after @nprofile…sxqh I managed to catch one last ride of Poznań's 105Na tram on the special "51" farewell line. The 105N type appeared 51 years ago on the city's streets - though this one was actually only 48 years old 😄 This particular form (HF 01 modernization) showed up 20 years ago, just when I started taking trams daily to get to high school. It's high time to retire though. Worked fine for me for several accounts. The only thing I recently suffered from in KMail was that it was sometimes stopping pulling new messages until akonadi account was restarted, but I think the last time I noticed it was a few weeks ago already so perhaps it got fixed meanwhile. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…mq6z Protip: tap somewhere inside the viewfinder to trigger an autofocus cycle (this was a relatively recent addition, easy to miss I guess) npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…tfqh But what are you migrating from/to? What do you want to do in the first place? This is an installation guide, so it tells you how to start from the clean slate. The package is now included in the PureOS repositories indeed. Coincidentally, Debian has packaged it a few days later as well. Not sure what you mean by migration guide. Migration from/to what? npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak Now moving onto the trixie-based PureOS 12 "dawn", which should become usable by early adopters in the coming months 🎉 Thank you for your support and patience on the way there 🤗 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak Better late than never: PureOS 11 (crimson) is finally out, catching up with Debian 12 (bookworm) just in time for when bullseye/byzantium lose their extended security support next month. I think there's enough people out there who could genuinely mean it unaware of differences, so better to be cautious ;) npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…d8rs @nprofile…872v I believe there's not a single well-supported phone in this family of SoCs (MediaTek Dimensity) so I don't know what makes you think this one will be an exception. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…p3ky @nprofile…f456 Well, that's where we differ in our judgement. Your stance may have made sense 20 years ago, but now the answer is "very likely, yes", especially that these days there's no real separation between desktop and mobile platform anymore. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…p3ky @nprofile…f456 Maybe it's just that I see a bigger picture. I've been using GNU/Linux phones as my main devices for nearly two decades now, it sometimes took a while but a successor always eventually came and significantly improved on what was there before. Sure, having more available options would be good, but if we all just wait until they're plentiful it's just never going to happen. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…p3ky @nprofile…f456 That's some arbitrary measure skewed by people used to phones that are only supported for some laughably short times. Librem 5 is a still supported and available device from 2020. It's slowly starting to show its age so I'm looking forward for a viable successor eventually appearing, but it's not like there's a desperate need to have one there yesterday already. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…p3ky @nprofile…f456 I don't get what you're trying to say at all. MNT Reform is about as affordable as Librem 5 is (and that's perfectly fine, hardware can't be copied out of thin air; economics of scale only help you *after* you gain that scale). npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…p3ky @nprofile…f456 @nprofile…wn4u People keep repeating that, and yet I'm using one and it feels perfectly fine now in 2026 and all the apps I need work on it. I understand that some people may have needs that aren't answered by these, but I think it may be tad exaggerated in all these discussions. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…78wx C++? 😱 What made you add these pluses to the mix? npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…w7nn Don't they also have a EU shop that ships from Poland? npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…j4pe See https://social.librem.one/@dos/115952734691702400 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…j4pe Similar story with fuel gauge patches, they need some changes: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/[email protected] / Generally, aside of really recent stuff, things that stay downstream usually have a reason to stay there. Some reasons are easier to get rid of than others though, so I can help point you in their direction. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…j4pe Yes, feel free to ping me there. Regarding USB there is https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected] / - in next but hasn't reached stable trees yet, so you may be missing that. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…j4pe Lots of things to do there! Just let's make sure to coordinate :) Are on you the community Matrix channel? There are many things in there that could be reworked for mainlining relatively easily, but I have a whole distro to maintain as well and nobody else has really worked on the kernel for a while now, so help would certainly be appreciated ☺️ npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…j4pe Note that there's a 6.18 tree for some time now where the only things left to do aside of cleaning it up is to forward-port the Redpine and DisplayPort/HDMI drivers. The latter I already have mostly working by pulling the latest version from the NXP tree, but I haven't yet decided if this is actually how we want to proceed with it. I have already sent several upstreamable patches recently that got applied for 7.0 and 7.1, but most of the others will need some extra work. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak The #Librem5 has properly detected chargers using BC1.2, Type-C and PD signaling for years now, but it struggled with sources that couldn't actually provide the advertised current (which could happen with buggy chargers/docks, broken or poorly made cables etc.). It would attempt to draw power, drop below voltage threshold, disconnect, and then do it all again once the voltage went back up to a good level in an endless loop. Good news: this behavior is about to be gone 😁 #mobilelinux #linuxmobile npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak With 6.12 now available for testing in PureOS, let's take the next step. #librem5 #mobilelinux #linuxmobile #linux #kernel #pureos https://social.librem.one/system/media_attachments/files/022/379/404/original/83f0182812f1aa5b.png npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…ckey Is that about Flatpak apps on PureOS? If so, then this is now fixed on crimson (but not on byzantium and it will probably stay broken there). npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak The first step forward 👀 #librem5 #mobilelinux #linuxmobile #linux #shotonlibrem5 https://social.librem.one/system/media_attachments/files/022/273/616/original/68b277c2059156a5.jpeg npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…vmwd Jeżeli wygrywa ktoś raz na miesiąc, to w ciągu Twojego życia będzie takich osób ok. tysiąc, więc to chyba nic zaskakującego, że możesz nikogo takiego bezpośrednio nie poznać (a niebezpośrednio to raczej już znasz w ok. trzecim stopniu) npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…vmwd Ale skąd pomysł, że nikogo takiego nie znasz w szóstym stopniu oddalenia? Hipoteza zakłada, że w szóstym stopniu znasz już całą ludzkość. Gdy weźmiesz dwie dowolne osoby w kraju to w zasadzie wystarczy, by każda z nich znała kogokolwiek, kto zna jakiegoś celebrytę - a to wcale nie musi być najkrótsza możliwa ścieżka. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…qw0r You can already get 10-bit 25 FPS without having to put extra plumbing between kernel drivers for questionable reward. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak It doesn't look particularly useful for the use-case of streaming through USB 3.0 either. With 2 lanes, at 4K we get 30 FPS with 8-bit and 25 FPS with 10-bit. 8-bit may fit into available USB 3.0 bandwidth, though it's already getting tight. 10-bit won't fit without repacking, cause we're getting 16-bit values from the CSI receiver - so you likely won't stream out more than 15 FPS anyway. So 2 lanes it is! npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak It doesn't look particularly useful for the use-case of streaming through USB 3.0 either. With 2 lanes, at 4K we get 30 FPS with 8-bit and 25 FPS with 10-bit. That may fit into available USB 3.0 bandwidth, though it's already getting tight. With 3 lanes, we get 30 FPS 10-bit, but I seriously doubt it could be streamed out raw at this rate. So if you want to turn your Librem 5 into a webcam, you'll have to live with RAW10 4K at 25 FPS anyway 😛 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak This would translate to about 33 FPS when cropped to 4K. We should be able to record up to 5 seconds of 10-bit 4K 30 FPS video to RAM, assuming 2GB of free space there. Is that worth the effort? 😁 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…7c2j Oh, and the 333 MHz pixel clock itself puts the hard limit on the framerate at 13 Mpx at about 25 FPS regardless of bit depth, and that's without counting blanking or protocol overhead - so we're hitting the ceiling anyway even with lane bandwidth left to spare. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…7c2j 5 Gbps* 😂 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…7c2j You can go slow enough with 3 lanes, but only for 10-bit pixels; with 8-bit ones, the slowest setting is too fast again. 4 lanes could theoretically work in this setup with 16-bit pixels, but even if the sensor could zero-pad its values to 16 bits it wouldn't let you achieve more FPS anyway, because then you'd hit the maximum supported MIPI CSI-2 bandwidth (5 Mbps). So there's basically no combination of settings where 4 lanes are usable in this setup 🤷 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…7c2j It's a result of two limitations combined: 1) i.MX 8M Quad's MIPI CSI-2 receiver handles one pixel at each rising edge of the UI clock, which has a maximum rate of 333 MHz. This means the bandwidth you can realize is effectively limited by the used pixel depth. 2) The 13 Mpx Samsung sensor can't really go slower than about 1 Gbit per lane with 25 MHz MCLK - various clocks go out of their ranges when you try. So it turns out that with 4 lanes, it just can't go slow enough 🐌 npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak Actually, we could probably go up to 21 FPS with 10-bit by using 3 lanes, but not sure if that's worth the effort. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak Actually, we could probably go up to 21 FPS with both 8-bit and 10-bit by using 3 lanes, but not sure if that's worth the effort. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak So I finally understand why 4-lane MIPI CSI-2 doesn't work with the #Librem5's big cam. Turns out it's not going to work - but I now at least understand why 😂 (this limits streaming at full res to about 16 FPS 10-bit and 20 FPS 8-bit instead of the sensor's 30 FPS, but you won't really be able to process it at this speed anyway so it's not a big loss; lower res can still work with higher framerates; with the current driver up to 120 FPS but it could go even higher) #linuxmobile #mobilelinux npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…were It's much easier to make an "expensive premium device" than "decent enough, affordable" one. It's not a non-US company (though does it matter than much with FLOSS?), but Purism has pretty much already trodden that path. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…94ng Check out apt-offline if you're on a Debian-based distro. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…whuq Unless you'd count some weird and complex setups with nested compositors in - no. You write code not just for machines to execute, but also for humans to review and maintain, and until that changes, the intention behind the structure of the code you output is just as important. A big part of my job is to read, understand and fix code written by others, and there's a similar assumption of "someone who wrote this at least believed that it would make sense" there. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…zxf4 And it's not just prose - it extends to code and art the same way, even if it's a bit less obvious there. npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…p7wd @nprofile…55ux Nice! All the needed building blocks are already there at least. USBGuard itself is used on the Librem 5 by default to not let the modem firmware impersonate another device, but it's not used for the USB-C port yet (though the user can add any rule they want, of course). https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/-/blob/main/plugins/usb-protection/gsd-usb-protection-manager.c npub1khykpx60874jw3mxregwmtctxsktxvme2e3n0r6tzevn6e09r3es46h4un Sebastian Krzyszkowiak @nprofile…mnem Wait, did they remove the web browser from newer Kindles?
