@nprofile…9atz pkgbase is FreeBSDs gift that just keeps on giving.
I’m staying on 14.x for as long as possible, and I’ll re-evaluate the situation when that goes EOL.

@nprofile…sfp0 The first line says jpc, should that be jcp?

@nprofile…9atz I don’t see any underlined text. Are there no links anymore?
Especially jarring to NOT have a link in the “documentation” box 😅

@nprofile…q5wq My experience with the Debian installer is giving the partition table a manicure because there is no “this is an EFI system” button, or a “do the right thing but use XFS instead of Ext4”.
FreeBSD lets me pick and choose between ZFS and UFS, BIOS and EFI boot, or both.

@nprofile…sr9k I hope you. I will be sad if it eats you.

@nprofile…ehlq I had an idea what we can use instead of pkgbase. FreeBSD has support for readonly root, we may have incremental zfs-send images with snapshots and use zfs-recv and bectl for upgrades. Directories that need to be writable need to be separate filesystems, so we would need a slightly different zfs layout than what is standard today.

@nprofile…ehlq @nprofile…3728 That would be great news! I read earlier that freebsd-update would be gone from version 15 and up, and that pkgbase would be the way to go.

@nprofile…ehlq @nprofile…axfx This was the feature that got me to switch to FreeBSD. After yet another botched Linux after a supposedly uneventful package upgrade, I had enough.
I love having a completely empty pkg for a clean installation, and the knowledge that anything is safe to uninstall. Why copy Linux distros on this.

@nprofile…ehlq @nprofile…3728 This is literally what scared me when pkgbase was announced.
The separation between base and pkg meant that I could do anything with pkg and not be scared it broke my system.
I’ll stay on 14 for as long as I can.
