- smooth, fast, comfy, lots of bells and whistles
- too many bells and whistles, in particular it isn't great at understanding the 35kph advisory signs on highway off-ramps don't apply to the highway itself, and gets angry at me continuing to drive at 100
- main charging test passed with flying colours - we can drive the 60kms to the city and back, and then easily charge that back up with my piddly 7 amp charger overnight

This whole "is Nigel Farage racist? 🤔" thing I see floating by in the UK press is really weird because yes. He is. It's his whole thing. The reason we in the rest of the world started hearing about him 20-odd years ago was because "oh a huge racist is trying to bring fascism back".

A slightly disconcerting thing for someone who makes weird music for fun and just puts it up on Bandcamp in case anyone else likes it, is I get an email from Bandcamp immediately every single time someone buys an album, telling me who bought it. You are all very generous and too kind.
100% of the proceeds gets spent on other people's music on Bandcamp, so it keeps going around.

I have absolutely no qualms about doing this. The day Twitter was sold, as soon as I heard the deal went through, I logged out and never went back. I didn't waste energy hanging around convincing anyone to leave the Nazi bar with me, if they came too then all good.
Any platform that asks me for ID to prove who I am, I just won't log in anymore. It's fine to do this. Telephones exist. Email exists. You can still contact people by other means, it's fine, and maintain your connections. Looking for suggestions;
- 10yo wants to get into "coding", I am a poor teacher
- "coding classes"/clubs no longer seem to exist, at least in Hobart, anymore
- online classes seem risky, don't know if they will be as inviting as something hands on with other kids and live discussion
- we had looked into a programmable robot, to make things a bit real and interactive; one I was looking to buy (Sphero SPRK+) seemed ideal, but it has been discontinued and the new model is 2x the price
Anyone have any tips on things to investigate?

I need to be very clear, that the push towards "vibe coding" - that is, deliberately deskilling people - is because AI code assistants are an (increasingly expensive) subscription service.
If you know how to code, you can just write Python, C, Java, R, PHP, whatever for free and make things. You may not own the tools of production, but at least you're not renting them.
If you have been deskilled so you only know how to vibe code, you will be paying for that privilege forever.
This also goes, by the way, for researchers who are starting to be convinced they don't need to learn how to be scientists anymore, because "the AI" can just do the science for them. Nope.

@nprofile…args similar feeling with digital photography replacing film. I think the difference with AI is: desktop publishing let average people produce *good* looking newsletters that were almost as good as the professionals. Digital cameras and editing let average people cheaply produce photos that were almost as good as the professionals. In both cases, the professionals were worried that untrained amauters were now able to do things *too* well.
GenAI lets people easily produce things that are...clearly not good, not professional, very easily spotted as AI "fakes". No professional author is worried that people are going to stop reading books because the AI can tell people stories now. Professional artists laugh at how ridiculous the GenAI ages look.

Adelaide Metro public transport ticketing is a bit fucking chaotic it seems. You can obtain and put money on a metroCard which I get the impression is the preferred method, but a bit of a pain in the arse for a visitor who just wants to get on one bus. You can tap a credit card - but that only tracks one trip, useless if you're taking a kid on the bus with you. You can download and use the Pay & Go app for a digital ticket, which I've just done, but this will not allow you to get discounted parking at a Park'n'Ride, that only works with a metroCard.
That is my whinge for today. A bit of bloody consistency wouldn't go astray.

This is insane.
I'm aware of, including some young people I personally know, of high-achieving high schoolers doing internships with scientists over a summer and writing a paper, and that's awesome.
But telling kids it's a requirement, that it's something they need to aim for or they are going to mess up getting into college? No way. Stop that.

Washing machine door cracked and fell off the hinge. Repaired it with Lego and Araldite. Appliance repair is my passion.

Making assumptions about Duolingo league competitors time zones based on their screen name, planning best strategy to claim #1 in diamond league this evening. Hurra, toll!

On this sacred #BandcampFriday, my full discography, 10 albums of mysterious ambience, is just AU$16.80, if you're into that sort of thing https://milford.bandcamp.com/

Weird to see a Guardian article on a very technical point of science I'm involved in, starring a cast of characters I work with on and off https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/30/black-summer-fires-a-veteran-ecologist-says-australias-bushfire-modelling-is-flawed-others-disagree

Last boost, a reminder that "VPN Service" just means "Sending all your internet traffic through some random dude who can intercept everything*. Sometimes that random dude is a Belarusian script kiddy, sometimes it's Mark Zuckerberg

I've got an extremely crappy, cheap old Android tablet that, even when it was new, had a battery life of about an hour and took about 5 minutes just to open the browser app and load a site. It does still turn on (and then complains bitterly about out-of-date certificates etc.)
Is there any hope for a device like this, can it be rooted and have some more sensible minimal OS installed on it?

What does one do if one's tax return, a very simple not at all complicated tax return, has disappeared into an abyss for 5 months and every time one calls the ATO about it they just say "yeah call back again in a month". Getting on the blower to sort it out appears to be pointless.

So having learned Google is about to shut down Google Podcasts, what alternatives are people using on Android? I used to like Overcast on iOS, I'm not sure what the equivalent is.

@npub1qqm…mzjy you mean prior to it recommending it to him? I mean yeah probably, but YouTube also recommended that shit to me before I blocked it, and even after I blocked and reported Sky News YouTube still occasionally pushes alerts to my phone telling me to watch. Those channels pay for promotion, they pay to be featured, that's literally how the system works.

Staying at my Dad's place, his YouTube watching method is to literally just watch whatever it throws at him. Which meant, some random old western... Which then transitioned to some weird dude trying to run his own pretend Sky News channel... Which transitioned to actual Sky News and Peta Credlin ranting about the Labor Greens Agenda.
Tried to surreptitiously do some channel blocking, but he's not even signed in so I can't. We're just getting the pure unadulterated black tar YouTube here.

Any #remotesensing peeps know a good source of global methane emission mapping data? TROPOMI's only been up there since 2018, there is a Canadian satellite SCISAT-1 which has been been around since 2003 but it's not really an imaging satellite, I get the impression it looks through the atmosphere towards the sun rather than at the ground. Is there anything else out there with a record of at least a couple of decades?
