Interesting bit in the Europol write-up around cyber criminals using gamification as training...
"To share calls to action, tutorials, updates, and to recruit volunteers, the group leveraged pro-Russian channels, forums, and even niche chat groups on social media and messaging apps. Volunteers often invited friends or contacts from gaming or hacking forums, forming small recruitment circles. These actors used platforms like DDoSia to simplify technical processes and provide guidelines, enabling new recruits to become operational quickly."
"Participants were also paid in cryptocurrency, which incentivised sustained involvement and attracted opportunists. Mimicking game-like dynamics, regular shout-outs, leader boards, or badges provided volunteers with a sense of status. "Some say it doesn’t help that CrowdStrike sells adversary figurines on its website—including a sinister-looking figure named Scattered Spider, a hacking group that has wreaked havoc on the Las Vegas Strip. (CrowdStrike says proceeds from the figurines are donated to charity.) At a private industry party last year, Microsoft served cocktails named after threat actors, including a Sangria Tempest and a Mint Sandstorm, according to attendees.

A financially motivated group of hackers is having a roaring success targeting Salesforce instances for “large-scale data theft and subsequent extortion” using social engineering techniques, warned Google this week.
The group has “demonstrated repeated success in breaching networks by having its operators impersonate IT support personnel in convincing telephone-based social engineering engagements” including within what it described as “English-speaking branches of multinational corporations.”

Nice visual storytelling plus information about groups like Black Basta, Brass Typhoon and a whole host of scammers.

A new report by Cato Networks suggests that the rise of #AI agents will lead to the rise of excessive agencies - AKA, the agents will have have excessive permissions, excessive functionality, and/or excessive autonomy - creating an additional area of risk for organisations and their networks, because cyber attackers will look to exploit them.
Last week, I had a very interesting chat with Cato Networks' chief security strategist Etay Maor about this - and it ties into something I'm (hopefully) working on - so watch this space.

Finding this whole looking for work thing to be pretty demoralising right now. 15 years of experience working in journalism and editorial, a decade with a focus on cybersecurity and it feels like that while I've carved myself a niche in this space by being good at writing about it (i guess?), the fact it is niche means there's very little opportunity out there right now.
A background in journalism and writing means I don't have a technical background, so moving into actual cybersecurity seems like a no go, while it feels like there's also very little demand for journalism/editorial in the space I focus on. (As evident two roles I had in cybersecurity editorial being eliminated in the last two years)
15 years of experience, 15 years of fighting tooth and nail to be in this space and now we're right back to the beginning.
Maybe it's because it's a Monday morning and I feel like I'm lacking purpose at the moment, but just... feels bad man.

After almost two years in the role, I recently received the unfortunate news that my job as Head of Editorial for [well-known cybersecurity] company is being eliminated because of corporate realignment.
I'm really sad and still in shock tbh. And I also need to find another job now in order to pay to keep a roof over my head, I guess?
Not really sure what the future holds but before I was in the job I'm now no longer have, I was a cybersecurity journalist for many, many years at ZDNet ( a role which was also taken out from under me when the whole senior editorial team was eliminated by new owners... who went onto sell the site at a big loss) so hopefully I'm still remembered from that.
(Google doesn't remember me though, my knowledge panel isn't a thing anymore)
I know I'm rambling now, but yeah - editorial, content, writing, journalism, that's my thing. Hopefully someone out there in the tech/cyber space needs that? Please. 🥺
Additional: something that's already proving tricky is that I'm in the UK, when it feels like the job market in this space is not great at all.

So, apparently Thames Water is still using IT systems from the 1980s, which doesn't seem very ideal or secure for a critical infrastructure operator in 2024.
“The software we use is older than me, and some of the hardware is older than my dad,” says Siddharth*. He is one of a team fighting a daily battle to sustain ancient IT infrastructure at Thames Water."

Europol says an international law enforcement operation has apprehended key figures in Ukraine thought to be behind several high-profile #ransomware attacks which cost victims hundreds of millions of Euros - including deployments of LockerGoga, MegaCortex, HIVE and Dharma ransomware campaigns.

Once again, it feels like one of the key reasons he's doing what he's doing to Twitter is because he just doesn't like journalists, the media, or any other of the prominent usergroups that are strongly critical of him.
Still find it weird how the literal richest man in the world can bang on about 'elites' when it's extremely rare for journalists to be affluent.
It's a poorly paid career path where nobody likes you!

@npub17lg…9uux I kind of put myself on it when I was laid off from my previous job.
I was offered my current job the day before I was let go. Due to my time there I got 2 months worth of severance pay - and given that would have been my notice period if I'd left of my own volition I decided to spend two months just chilling out as who knows when that will happen again. It was great. (I played A LOT of F1 Manager!)

One the one hand, Baldur's Gate 3 looks very good and VERY big.
But on the other hand I've been playing Final Fantasy XIV for pushing towards three years at this point and I've still got two more expansion packs to get through, let alone all the side stuff.
