Do we have any extremely long running, serialized written space scifi in english? Sort of like how germany has Perry Rhodan?
Not like "The Foundation & Robot Books by Asimov make a long ass timeline of a couple of dozen books"
AND not-like "There are a lot of star trek/star wars novels."
But SciFi stories that are long running across decades, highly serialized, and sometimes multi-author. WHERE the primary continuity is the bound dead trees, and their not media tie-ins to TV or film ?
The closest ive seen is some planetary romance stuff like Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom (which is far far shorter.) AND the Dray Prescot books which ALSO happen to german originally interestingly enough, but more available to english speakers.

One of the things, ive been trying to probe; is peoples feelings on this with art vs code.
AS I have a pet theory that the more folks think of code as a purely utilitarian thing; the less offensive LLM generative code is.
BUT the more one thinks of code as art, or even potentially political speech, the more LLM generated code seems to be inapropriate.

I polled a bunch of folks on the fediverse about their feelings of LLM generated art a week or two back. AND most folks it reached seem to feel that the presence of generative AI contributions within a work; decreased the work's artistic value if not negating it completely.
A couple people (correctly in my opinion) criticized my poll for pointing out it might be artistically valid to use generative AI as part of a larger work critiquing generative AI.
THOUGH I think that last one is probably a pretty narrow usage, if one is looking for a broad "temperature reading".

AND you find the trained-on other-peoples-code aspect of the code generation morally distasteful? Again if I understand this correctly?

Ill add there is a reason im quick to try and talk about abstaining from things or software "where one can".
There is a lot of software I use for work, I wouldnt touch with a 10 foot poll in my personal life. AND I definitely too dont enforce my choices on this stuff, onto my husband. (Though I try to steer his choices towards harm reduction on occasion.) We all have to figure out where these boundaries can be drawn in our own lives.

ALMOST Surprised the GNU project hasn't figured out a stance yet (for or against).
Debian last I heard was agnostic, not wanting to dictate tooling for Debian developers. Fedora seems firmly in the "embrace" camp.
Im KIND of waiting for Desktop Environments to stake out their positions publicly. ONLY one im aware of is the Pantheon Desktop which came down on a hard no.
I figure if KDE disappoints, ill switch to CDE or GNUStep. OR just a Windows Manager.

To my knowledge, NetBSD has a similar ban. AND the Gentoo project has banned it from their project code. (Though Gentoo will likely keep what tainted code gets injected into the linux-kernel.)
I doubt it will be welcomed in OpenBSD as well.

FreeBSD still has 32bit support until November 2028, but it requires an Intel Pentium Pro / Pentium II (i686) or better.
NetBSD will likely support 32bit for longer (mips is still a tier-I architecture over there). But it still requires a 486 or better.

It's hard for me to express optimism about the #FSF's Librephone project. It strikes me like they're tackling the wrong end of the problem.
They have a complete FLOSS distro of Android under the GNU project already, called Replicant. It's basically stalled out because no modern phones meet it's freedom requirements.
AND any attempts by this Librephone project to reverse engineer all of the proprietary bits out of a modern phone, such that you could begin a modern Replicant.... will only be good for as long as that one single model of phone stays relevant?
I can't help but feel like the FSF's total lack of interest in open hardware has painted them into a corner on this one. #floss #smartphone #android

There are distros, where if you change the default shell, flatpak's environmental variables will get unset; and apps won't even appear in your desktop environment's launcher of choice. Definitely happens in Ubuntu derivatives.

I've looked at it, but it's also not really .... well supported ? Like last I glanced there were a number of github issue that were like "Is this working on the latest build?"
It's there its cool. But its also clearly not central to the project.
AND current TIC-80 seems like 90% of the experience id want. Your ideas are more like a stand alone development environment capturing the retro programming ethos; as more of a complete entity, instead of a experience thats designed around being a toy beside a real computer.
Without the expense of custom runs of hardware, or retro hardware off ebay.

#Kobo Libra Colour arrived AND it's the best performing eInk device ive ever had in terms of speed rendering #ttrpg PDFs I have seen.
In fact flipping through the newest edition Basic Roleplaying, in landscape mode, with the PDF set to fit to width... and just scrolling each page up and down with my finger, and flipping actual pages with the hardware buttons is VERY usable...
AND maybe half a year back a lot of denizens of the #Fediverse helped me test this same PDF on a whole truck load of #eInk and #ePaper devices, and most crashed and burned hard on it. Might be good for some folks to know. Maybe of interest to [@libreture](https://mastodon.social/@libreture )

Doing all these "ports" of classic doom but completely severed from the id Tech engine, is one of the weirder trends to me in #videogames
The id Tech engine became one of was one of the most ported engines in history; and has endlessly portable variants. There isn't a whole lot of technical reason to not use something descended from the original doom engine when porting doom to new platforms.
Except to avoid having to comply with the #GPL

The past decades of success of Google Docs, in enterprise. Really means all those times people claimed StarOffice / OpenOffice / LibreOffice wasn't feature complete enough for enterprise... was a lie.
AND I don't think we point that out enough.
EDIT: Not saying you should switch. Just that some enterprise organizations COULD have. Based purely on "features".

Got a reproduction cart, which glitches on the #AnaloguePocket but not on actual #GBA hardware. Frustrating because I just got the analogue pocket dock, and was planning on rocking out with SuperGameboy borders.
Looks like it's failing to bank switch properly on the Pocket to me. Loads the wrong creature/robot sprite in the opening, and misloads a map, on the first map change. (Wrong NPC placements, which block entrance to the map.)
But shows no obvious signs of glitching. No corrupted sprites, or text, no read errors, etc.
Mulling a bit this morning, if I just want to play the rom on the AnaloguePocket, or the physical repro cartridge on the GBA or try to get another working cartridge.

Look im kinda a fair weather #Marvel fan. Ive read some comics, I've taken long breaks. Ive watched some movies I've skipped some.
But like I think people are over thinking this one. They're not separate characters.
Dr Doom is KINDA what you get when dark magic resurrects Iron Man.
They're both some of the foremost engineering super scientists on the planet.
If Tony Stark were a lich. .. you'd get something very much like Victor von Doom.

Had a wierd ass interview today where I asked what the hybrid/remote work policy was at the end of the interview, and if this position fit within it. And the manager acted like I had said something truly profane.
Went back to the job listing. It clearly states twice:
"This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies."
