Well, if we don't remind the world that we exist, people will ignore us and our needs. And if people only get information about autism from RFKjr, they'll think we're all incompetent and incapable of living worthwhile lives. It's important that we show the world that we are actually people with rich lives who deserve all the consideration and respect other people get, and that we show other autistic people there's a way to live that isn't some nightmare freak show. And we have to share our struggles and coping strategies and neurodivergent wisdom with our fellow autistic folk, so they can learn how to do better in a world that demands we pretend we're just like allistic people so as not to bother anyone with our existence. Sorry if us just being ourselves annoys you, but your comfort is not our priority. And why can't I get to be cute and quirky sometimes? Does everything about my life have to be a tragedy? Would you be less annoyed at me if my life was entirely horrible, instead of just impossible to deal with because everyone demands I stop being autistic before they'll cut me any slack?

The lonely hill I'm willing to die on is that the entire field of #Philosophy has to be rebuilt to incorporate the idea of #neurodiversity. A large part of philosophy is the discussion of human nature, but it makes the error of assuming that there is only one normal human nature, and it's the neurotypical one, and anything else is an abberation. So philosophy bros will talk about motivations like they are universal, and somehow they always seem to center neurotypical nature to the exclusion of everyone else.
I think most of the great philosophers were probably neurodivergent. So many of them sound like autistic folk just trying to work out why people are so impossible to deal with. And I think that's why a lot of people struggle with philosophy - they don't realize that neurotypes exist, or how much they affect, so they can't understand why none of their explanations actually make sense.
This is probably a thesis-level discussion, and I definitely don't have the spoons to write that up, but I figure I can't really be all alone on this hilltop. But I've yet to find a philosopher who will talk to me about this. I assume I must sound like a crank to them.

I have hated Valentine's Day for as long as I can remember, all the way back to grade school and those stupid card exchanges where you find out just how unpopular you really are. I have never had a sweetheart on this day, so it's always felt like the day that everyone who was lucky enough to find love rubs it in the face of everyone who is not so lucky. "Look at us! We are the most fortunate people on Earth to have found true love. Let's have a special day just for us, the people who already have the best thing ever, and make sure the people who don't have it feel an extra dose of missing out on top of the baseline despair of being alone and unloved." It's fucking barbaric. #ActuallyAutistic

It sounds like Trump is going to block SNAP benefits (food stamps) from being paid out in November, using the excuse of the government shut-down. If you know anyone on SNAP and can afford to help them out, this might be a good time to offer some support. I'll miss the money but I'm in no danger of going hungry myself, so don't worry about me.
We're all going to have to get better at looking out for each other to make it through this autocratic mess, so maybe this is a good time for us to practice some of that. If nothing else, donate to a food bank – they are really struggling right now.

The whole way I thought about being #neurodivergent changed when I realized that neurotypical didn't mean normal or healthy, and wasn't the baseline from which other, inferior neurotypes diverged. It's just another neurotype that happens to be the most common one, so it dominates and almost always gets its way.
As a queer person who grew up in straight society, it was easy for me to understand that one type being more common means nothing about it being better than another. Start from there, and it's easier to see our differences as just differences, instead of seeing differences as deficits or impairments.

Seeing that some villains are trying to take the T out of LGBT so trans people get erased and ignored. You know that the word "queer" is right there and it includes all of us perverts and freaks, right? We tried hard to get queer to happen, but the straight folk didn't like it so they call us LGBT, like we're simply a list of approved aberrations. And a lot of us queer folk have submitted to this linguistic oppression. I am sad every time I hear a queer person say "LGBT" or "LGBTQIA+" or whatever, because that's accepting the oppressor's language for us. Queer is a good word because it includes everyone who isn't part of the sexual majority. It is inclusive by default and by definition.
For anyone who thinks "queer" is a slur so they prefer "gay" because it's not a slur, I'll point out that only a couple decades ago "gay" was a slur and we said "homosexual" to be polite. Language evolves. Embrace "queer" and avoid having to figure out what groups deserve to be part of an abbreviation.

2025-09-24 16:20:38 GMT

No, that's not how the autism spectrum works.
> Autism is a spectrum, and yes, on one end of that spectrum it can be debilitating and both those with autism and their caretakers need and deserve support. On the other end? Normal fucking people with jobs and hobbies and families...
While there is a colloquial use of the word *spectrum* to mean a scale from a little to a lot, the "autism spectrum" is a technical term in the field of psychology, so it doesn't mean that. In optics, a spectrum is a breakdown of light into its component colors. It's the rainbow you see when you pass a beam of light through a prism. And similarly, the autism spectrum is how we decompose autism into a set of autistic traits.
The autism spectrum is not a scale from low-functioning to high-functioning. There are autistic people who are socially awkward and stim a lot, and those that are fine socially but have a lot of sensory issues. That's what the spectrum means. And "profound autism" is not a thing, either.
Autistic people darkly joke that we're either seen as low-functioning so we get no agency, or we're high-functioning and get no support. Bullshit functioning labels do not help us – they only help people figure out the easiest way to ignore us and our needs.
Whenever autism becomes the main character, a lot of people will jump into the conversation only to show how ignorant they are. Keep in mind that even people who purport to know about autism generally have very little idea what they are talking about. Be skeptical of allistic people who think they are smart about autism. Dunning-Kruger comes for everyone.

I'm so tickled to see posts from all these folks who have never been to a protest before today, and their delight as they discovered what it's all about. If we believe the Alt National Park Service estimates, there were over 7 million protesters today, so we probably activated a couple million new activists. And once activated, people tend to stay active. Consider today a sea change moment for the USA. Things are going to be a little different from now on. #NoKings

I want a competing philosophy meme because I'm tired of the Trolley Problem. The ethical conundrums of our age seem to be less about when we get to exercise power over others, and more about how to compete with others to avoid harm in a rigged system.
I'm thinking about the Outrun The Bear Problem. (probably needs a more catchy name. Pursuit Bear Problem?) It's based on that old joke that if a bear is chasing you and a companion, you don't need to be faster than the bear, but just have to be faster than your companion. The conundrum is this: Is it ethical to outrun your companion so the bear catches them instead of you? And what about variations? Is it ethical to do something to slow your companion down? What if you could cooperate to have a 50% chance of both of you escaping but there's a 50% chance the bear gets both of you? I think this could be just as rich a thought experiment as the Trolley Problem, and perhaps more applicable to our current social issues.

I have been autistically online for nearly a decade now, and I have never seen the Autistic community as worked up over something as we are about RFKjr's looming fascist bullshit. He obviously wants to use us to push his antivax nonsense, and at the same time he wants to do a eugenics and eliminate us from the population. This is a Red Alert. Glad to see folks aren't being quiet about it, but it's also scary to see everyone as freaked out as I am.

In case it's not clear, when a sociopath explains away bad behavior by saying it was "just a joke", they don't mean they were making a joke to be funny. These so-called jokes are a test to see who is in-group and who isn't. If you think it's a good joke, you're part of their group. If you don't think it's a good joke, you're their enemy.
This is why their humor sucks. They're not making jokes to be funny, but to weed out the people who don't think they're funny.

The most basic protip for using the internet:
Do not write a big chunk of text in a browser input field.
Compose your writing in another app where you can save your progress and have better editing tools. And then when you click the Submit button and there's an error and you lose the text in the form, you still have what you wrote in the other app.

As much as I value most of the work of the ACLU, I wish they would get off their high horse about why they think it's important to defend the speech rights of Nazis. Some misguided fools seem to think that there is no line that can be drawn for what speech must protected and what should not. Well, nothing Nazis say is in good faith or should be protected. Nazis can eat shit and die, and nobody needs to hear a single thing they want to say.
And even though I respect most of what the ACLU does, the Nazi Dinner Rule[1] still applies. Until these fools stop fighting to defend the rights of Nazis to parade down Main Street in full uniform, they're just another kind of enabler, and I want nothing to do with them.
This is part of how we have to fight fascism. Nobody gets a pass for enabling fascists. Nobody's work is so important that they need to accept fascism to advance their goals.
[1] Nazi Dinner Rule says that if you're at a dinner party and one of the guests is a Nazi and you don't kick them out, then it's a Nazi dinner party. Nobody puts up with Nazis except other Nazis.

If there's one thing I would convey to future generations about the troubled times we are living through, it's how utterly fucking stupid all of this feels. None of it makes sense. It's like human civilization decided to destroy itself out of spite.

I think the reason allistic people hate #autistic #RelatableStories is that they are bad at them.
When we do relatable stories, it's to show we have shared experiences, to reassure that we understand what we're being told, and maybe even as a kind of emotional co-regulation. I really find it soothing when I'm upset about something and an autistic friend shares their own similar experience, even if they don't have a solution for me at the end. And sharing a RS can be hard, and can require making yourself vulnerable to disclose things that feel very personal, and even that can be a kindness to show someone you care about them enough to do that for them.
Allistics complain that relatable stories are just us always wanting to make everything about ourselves and monopolize the conversation, or that we're insensitive to what others go through, or that we're oversharing. It seems they think it's always easier to talk about yourself, when for us that may be the hardest thing to talk about. Or they think that sharing a RS is some kind of one-upping competitive thing, or a way to trvialize or dismiss what someone just told you. After some consideration, I have come to believe that's mostly projection, and that for them, that's what they are doing when they do their version of RS. So for them, it really is a rude thing, because it's rude to make everything about yourself or to seem insensitive to someone else's experience.
The #DoubleEmpathyProblem is the bane of my existence. Ironically, it seems autistic people grok the concept quickly and almost intuitively, but allistic people never seem to understand how deep and profound the communication gap really is. But if I could get everyone to understand just one thing about autism, it would be that.

It's not just that I think LLMs and so-called "generative" AI produce unreliable, erroneous, or even dangerous output. It's not just that it uses energy at rates that are screwing with decarbonization efforts and could ruin any chance we have at fighting climate change. It's not just that it is always based on uncompensated appropriation (i.e. "theft") of human creativity and is basically a plagiarism laundering machine.
It's that when someone uses AI, I assume they know these things, but don't care.
I understand that there are valid use cases for AI, but I don't believe the current LLM tech is good enough even without the big downsides. But there's a new Gold Rush and all the tech investors want to make some fortunes, so they will push this crap on everyone until we are all lost in a fog of bullshit explanations and creepy, homogenized art.
If I see a post that uses AI generated art, I won't read the post. If someone posts something "from ChatGPT" I will ignore it entirely. If it wasn't worth your time to write it, it's not worth my time to read it, and I won't willingly participate in the rise of such a dangerous, wasteful, and unethical technology.

My #ActuallyAutistic shower thought for the morning: Most NT folk think that accepting and including ND folk means being patient while we learn to fit into the NT norms, not making space for other norms to co-exist. They think their way is normal, healthy, and proper, so it's only natural for everyone else to adapt and conform. This is the mindset we have to change. We need space to be ourselves, not constant pressure to change into something we are not and never can be, and punishment and exclusion when we fail at that.

I have been using the word "neurosupremacy" for a while. I think it does a better job of capturing the extreme power imbalance and abusively oppressive nature of things than a simple -ism does. Similar terms seen: the Stimpunks Foundation uses the word "neurocentrism", and recently YouTuber ProudlyAutistic coined "neuroism". I think there's room for more than one term because there are subtle differences, but also I'd like to see some convergence.
