Note FlowCrypt is legit, but it's not a "cloud service" AFAIK, it's a browser extension for doing PGP type stuff on top of Gmail. Maybe they also run some cloud service too though.

Sounds like some sort of key management API that is used remotely. I.e. my guess is, some server somewhere stores the keys, you access it... still not exactly E2EE though, as it's someone else's server that is storing the keys. Could be your server though! (Maybe?)
If you implemented this API and somehow figured out how to configure Gmail to use it, then maybe it could be qualified as a very MITM-able E2EE.

If I were you I'd think of a contingency for this. Perhaps Purism isn't someone you want to work with, but maybe Fairphone or someone else would work. They don't have to have an existing track record for being good at security — that's the role you'd be filling.

Other algorithmic feeds can be generated by the user themselves using a small self-hosted LLM. Users will be able to generate these feeds by simply speaking them into existence:
The UI will show an input field, and the user will type what sorts of posts they want to see. E.g.: "Show me posts related to information security"
Then, the server will pass every single post that goes through the server's "global timeline" through this LLM-based filter. The ones the filter approves get sent to this "algorithmic feed" (really just a list).
This technique can make the concept of hashtags (like the ones below) obsolete.

It's true that algorithmic feeds will work differently on the #Fediverse than they do on either #BlueSky or #X, but that doesn't mean they have to suck.
They can in fact be better.
Here's an example of how it can work (if done properly):
A common algorithm is to show popular posts you might have missed that are "near you".
Developers can explore 3 different concepts of "near you":
"Near You v1": Popular posts from people you follow directly. 0-steps removed.
"Near You v2": Popular posts including some sample of the people followed by some of the people you follow (perhaps not all of them, that might be too much data to process for your server).
"Near You v3": Popular posts from the set of people you follow, plus some sample of posts from the relay(s) you follow.
Now the hard part on the #Fediverse is figuring out which posts are popular. After all, the fact that a post has been RT'd or Like'd is not broadcast to all servers. My understanding is that there are ideas for protocol adjustments for how to make "just enough" of this information available to servers without clogging the pipes or overloading servers.
In fact, all 3 "Near You"s can be algorithmic feeds that servers like #Pleroma, #Misskey, #Mitra, #Mastodon, and offer to their users.

@nprofile…2cpy Lots of people want algorithmic feeds. Algorithmic feeds aren't necessarily bad (although they certainly can be). BlueSky has done a pretty good job on how they separate them in the UI and treat them as lists. Both Mastodon and Pleroma and others have lists already, and and the algorithmic feed can be treated like a list too. As long as the user has control over the types of algorithmic feeds they use, there isn't much of a problem. Algorithmic feeds can increase usage of the #Fediverse by highlighting interesting posts that otherwise you might miss. I like to check both the algorithmic feed and the regular feed on BlueSky. What I don't like is how X sortof forces a proprietary and gamed algorithmic feed on me by default, but #Fediverse implementations don't need to do that. They can do it better.

That ideal is one server per user.
That seems like a crazy high bar, but at least we should aim for it, because in terms of UX, that in fact is the ideal for everyone involved.
This requires making self-hosting extremely inexpensive. That means #Mastodon is a big no-go. It's way too resource intensive.

What do I mean by "the ban situation"?
I mean a few things:
• One instance banning another. This is horrible UX. Nobody wants another person deciding who they are or aren't allowed to follow. But that's how the #Fediverse works with public instances. Each public instance has a moderator and sometimes they ban entire instances. This is a real problem if that entire instance has many legitimate users on it.
• An admin banning a user on their own server. This leads to real headaches for that user and makes them think that "the #fediverse " (as a whole) is broken. If migrating accounts were easier and more streamlined, this wouldn't be as big of a problem, and if they are running their own server in the first place, they wouldn't be banned to begin with.

We need more #Fediverse servers that are run by individuals.
The ideal social network configuration / infrastructure is one server per individual. This is pure-P2P and it is also what is most ideal in terms of moderation.
Large #Fediverse servers are a problem in terms of moderation and user-experience.
You just can't expect real freedom of speech from large servers. And that leads to bans, and bans lead to poor UX.
So the more efficient a server implementation is, the easier it is to run, the more individuals will be able to self-host, and the better the ban situation will be.

It's an interesting question though: why is it that the #Fediverse seems less toxic than both #BlueSky and #X?
I think at least two factors are at play:
#BlueSky is less decentralized than the #Fediverse, and is marketed more as "people who hate X"
The #Fediverse doesn't have any algorithmic feeds. While algorithmic feeds can increase engagement, that also means they can promote mindless groups of hordes as well that snowball into digital group-on-group fights.

@nprofile…m8mr @nprofile…vqlu Fair enough. However, Private Spaces don't really have a separate user environment associated with them, and they represent a slightly different conceptual model.
What I'm saying is that AOSP could also have decided to not create a thing called "Private Spaces" but instead made a UI for integrating User Profiles into the current profile, that effectively would be the same thing as "Private Spaces" but would also stick to the same conceptual mental model.
So instead of Private Spaces, there'd be a UI for running apps from a different User Profile in the current one, similar to how #QubesOS works. Qubes actually runs entire different VMs side-by-side, and you can transfer data between them, including clipboard contents.
So with a single thing called "User Profiles" you'd be able to both "log in to the user profile" and "launch isolate apps from that profile inside of this one". There would be only one thing to manage mentally: the user profiles, instead of User Profiles + Private Spaces.

It seems possible to me to be able to launch apps from a different User Profile in the current one, and if that's possible then you really don't need Private Spaces or Work Profiles. You'd be able to run apps side-by-side while retaining isolation and shared clipboard if you wanted, and users would only have to think in terms of one metaphor / conceptual system.

I just tried out Private Spaces btw, and it is rather confusing... more so than the other types, as it also lets you hide it and then I can't seem to figure out how to show it again. 🤕
It seems to me like these are 3 radically different UIs for the same type of feature...
It's probably not something you'll consider (as it would require a lot of work undoing what Google did), but if I were to try to simplify all of this while retaining the features people want, I would remove both Private Spaces and Work Profiles, and work only with "User Profiles" - but enhance this feature. This way there is only one word and concept to use when communicate the idea of "more isolation" to users.
For example, to get the same type of effect that you get from Word Profiles and Private Spaces, I'd use some type of container UI metaphor - similar for example to the Bubble UI that apps like Slack supports, where little bubbles hover over an already-running app. This would allow easy clipboard sharing with apps running in a different User Profile without the need for resorting to the user of different concepts and vocab like "Private Spaces" and "Work profiles", while still offering those same features.

@nprofile…m8mr Thank you! It sounds like Work Profiles and Private spaces are quite similar, and that soon you'll be able to hide/get rid of Work Profiles and just make the distinction be between User Profiles and Private Spaces.
It sounds like the difference between the two is that they provide similar isolation features, but User Profiles are more isolated and don't have the ability to share the clipboard whereas Private Spaces do (?) and do not require switching users.
Is that about right?

@nprofile…m8mr Oh, I think I get it, one reason to use a Work Profile would be to avoid having to create new settings and new accounts (e.g. in Google Play Store), but still somehow benefitting from isolation, is that right?

@nprofile…m8mr OK, this is somewhat helpful but still a little confusing. I think for users to really understand this we'd need to understand the different use-cases for these different features.
I always lean towards simplification though, so if it's possible to simplify things down while still having these isolation features I think users would prefer that to having to think about User Profiles vs ...
I.e. one question that's still not clear to me is why anyone would want/need to use anything other than User Profiles for isolating apps?

Schools in America have normalized debt.

@nprofile…9k7h Unfortunately no. There were a lot of updates. From Mesa to FreeDesktop to 373 other updates as part of were all bundled together in the update UI, which I'm sure included updates to the kernel and KDE and other stuff

I can't use @nprofile…vcea on my x86 iMac since the most recent @nprofile…05jc update.
The mouse moves in stutters and any key press takes 5 seconds to register. kwin_wayland using up 100% CPU.
This is the second time an update has borked the iMac. Updating #Linux is dangerous. 😕
Any ideas on how to fix? #fedora #linux #kde

They've gotten so angry at him that I'm seeing calls to target and vandalize and damage random Tesla owner vehicles.
What did these Tesla owners do to deserve mob wrath? I'm not sure. But the whole thing is rather dumb and a misallocation of outrage.
