Ok so I want to surprise my wife by painting our bedroom while she’s away for a long weekend. Need to pick a paint. Managed to get her to pick a color without arousing her suspicions that anything is eminent. So far so good. Minor glitch though: it was a Sherwin Williams color and when I went to the store with my dad he thought their prices seemed ridiculous.

Recs for a good, affordable first record player?
- Doesn't need built in speakers.
- Don't plan to DJ or digitize
- We're not audiophiles but I don't have the least discriminating ear either…like the main thing I miss about when CarPlay worked in my car is the better sound vs Bluetooth, ya know?

2024-12-22 01:53:02 GMT

@nprofile…udnc I have a lot of ideas about tools, mostly software, and how they should work, and how they fit into a strategic big picture. I am more interested in design than code. Overall I want to be on a team that builds tools as strategic interventions but I don't know how that might work or what kind of funding models are possible. I work in a pretty low level tech support role and have no experience with any of this stuff, and also I'm 40.

2024-12-19 15:43:48 GMT

I think maybe a dream job for me is “product manager” or “ux designer” for tech things but in a leftist way, I just don’t know what any of that means or if it’s possible

This is only the extant issues I'm dealing with now, I also had to deal with the maddening world of getting the right adapter and cable combo so that one of my Macs could transmit a 5k signal through an HDMI cable from its USB-C port, apparently using DisplayPort?!

Most of the frustrations come from Apple which just seems to go out of its way to frustrate such a setup. Touch ID can only be paired to one Mac. (I thought I'd read otherwise but was misled.) The trackpad won't stop trying to be a bluetooth trackpad paired to a single computer.
Meanwhile both computers detect the external display and extend to the desktop no matter which input I select. So invariably one of them gets a phantom display unless I physically disconnect.

Through work I got the new Asus ProArt 5k display and an Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and got a Magic Trackpad from my dad he no longer used. The display supposedly has KVM functionality. I should be able to just plug the keyboard and trackpad into it and everything just works right? Nope!

2024-12-14 16:57:00 GMT

I was really excited to get a setup with two MacBooks sharing one display and it has been so incredibly frustrating, nothing works the way it should

2024-12-08 15:05:22 GMT

I got a new used phone (mint condition, AppleCare, hell yeah, go me) and I'm thinking of selling my 12 mini, but like the going rate for this perfectly functional phone with a few dents on the edge is maybe $150, and that seems less than its value as a camera alone?? Like I just bought a dedicated webcam through work for almost that, and it is worse.

@nprofile…jjf7 Ah I didn't know that was an option! She loves her existing bike, but electric assist would make it viable to do her work commute on bike in reasonable time without getting too sweaty.

2024-11-28 14:03:23 GMT

Are there any good "lower end" (not too much over $1000) ebikes that are lighter weight? I got a used Rad Power folding bike which I love, and I want to get my wife an ebike of her own - but I think her main hesitancy is how heavy they are.
