If they have no incentive to activate then it's not clear why they ever would. The whole point of a UASF is to exert leverage on the miners.
Nodes can set rules but rules without blockspace do not a chain make.

I think if y'all had gotten say, Block, Coinbase, or even Strike, River, or one or a few of the big LSP's you'd possibly have a bit more attention from the miners. That, or even just some big whales who made it clear they'd be dumping their Bitcoin for the forked coin in the event of a chainsplit. Having blocks thrown out by people who aren't actually a major impact on the demand for blockspace you create anyway is not the biggest motivator.

It's pretty important information because it indicates that for all the fanfare about BIP-148 it was starting from a stance where many miners were already onboard, rather than the <1% in the case of 110. Indicating that the chainsplit, rather than being one thriving and one DOA, would have been a substantial split where both chains actually produced blocks (albeit both of them substantially slower for a little while until they hit a difficulty adjustment). There's also the matter of the rationale for objecting to Segwit having been something a lot more trivial, given the firmware based advantage Bitmain had with covert AsicBoost, rather than turning away a large portion of fee paying transactions at the request of a loud minority of nodes which don't account for a large portion of the economic activity on Bitcoin (thus neither generating a large number of fees nor placing a particularly large bid under the asset -- effectively being negligible in the event that they split off, and also mostly likely to just give up and return to the main chain when they do).
And the website isn't new; he just has that redirect url to get to that dashboard to save time as it has been one of his more popular ones.

That UASF didn't actually activate though. The miners decided it wasn't worth a chainsplit because of the economic weight of the nodes that had activated.
And 90%? Curious when you'd point to for that; BIP-148 was getting 22% of blocks per signaling period in December and it went up from there.
Miners can absolutely be swayed by nodes. But they're swayed by nodes with more economic weight. Merchant nodes. When it's a bunch of start9's run by people who aren't transacting and most of whom admit they'll not be standing by the fork when it happens, there's no reason the miners would change their course. Nobody's talking about selling their BTC to buy the resultant forked coin, and the chatter about a PoW change to keep the fork alive has been admittedly minimal. 10 exahash (and certainly dropping once the rewards drop off precipitously in market value and no longer pay the cost to rent) leaves that chain taking ~3 years to reach its first difficulty adjustment without one.
Also, if 90% of miners opposed BIP-110, it'd mean BIP-110 had increased its support more than 10 fold at this point.
At the end of the day I don't have any skin in this game. I just see a lot of people being whipped up into a fervor of fear around a problem that is likely blown out of proportion, and worse, around a "solution" to it that isn't. I don't see it likely that you can ever prevent jpgs and other spam entirely in a low fee environment. You can of course lower the blocksize, to limit the fidelity of said jpegs, and to raise the average fees by reducing the supply of blockspace (and perhaps we should -- the raise with Segwit was something of a compromise with the big blockers anyway, and we have more proven out layers now). But rallying around moving data from one place in the block to another and convincing people its an existential issue has been peak silliness.

The number of blocks mined leading up to segwit looked night and day different compared to 110. Even 8 months out Segwit was getting 22%+ blocks per signaling period. 110 hasn't hit 1% in any signaling period yet.
You know BIP110 doesn't stop jpegs. You know it doesn't stop ordinals. You know it doesn't stop runes.
So what exactly do you see as the benefit? Sheer quantity of data?
Honestly curious because I don't see the vast majority of that data sticking around once fees get off the floor anyway. Or even likely to get back to 2022/23 levels given that the NFT scamming has mostly run its course. And of course even then, the fee market did its job.

Also, not for nothing, but BIP-110 will activate. It's just that when it does in about 27 days, unless y'all have somehow gotten 50% more of the hashrate, it'll activate and split off the chain.
The big if isn't so much about whether that happens, but whether it'll be known as BLV or BCashJr. I lean toward the former as I see a lot of Craig in Luke but BCashJr does have a nice ring to it.

It's where we get things like Bitcoin podcasts that are one long stream of ads from sponsors themselves who are just leeches and middlemen on the ecosystem. Trezor, Ledger, Bitbox, Ledn, hosted mining.
And at least podcasts it makes a bit more sense. There's a friction to the production. The ones done for the love of it are best, and warrant more donations for sure, especially as it is a one-way medium for the most part.
But if someone is posting notes for revenue, not only do I not feel compelled to compensate. I feel compelled to mute.

You're correct here. While the Dutch did gain a good amount of political control through William of Orange (and the establishment of parliamentary supremacy) my history was lacking on these companies. Didn't realize the British East India company had already been so established separately.
I am admittedly looking less at the actions of institutions and more at the flows of wealth (and power through it).
I do happen to know the Warburg family sort of followed this path of Venice to Holland and then through England helping establish the Fed. But yes, the VOC was a stray on my part. Thanks for the correction.

Y'all are both way better at this than me but I have been finding the old MIT 6.001 class with the wizard book (Structure and implementation of computer programs) to be REALLY good at some of the abstraction if you do feel like you missed some of the basics somewhere. It's all opencourseware (vids on YouTube).
I know the Internet teaching me in chunks often has a way of leaving out things everyone gets in an intro class so even if I've been learning it for years it can feel like an off kilter body of knowledge.

The people behind it do mean well. At least as far as I can tell, for most anyway.
There's the failure to recognize that you simply can't stop arbitrary data, as one major reason not to fork. You can see what I mean in action with the case at https://knotslies.com where an image file is successfully embedded in a compliant transaction. Likewise, the Ordinals folks just announced an update making their shit 110 compliant too.
Then there's the fact that you just don't have the hashrate. This activation is modelled on a 51% attack. It only works if you have 51% or more of the hashrate to end up with the longest chain. You can see very plainly at https://bip110.rip that they're not even at 1% let alone 51%. Compare this to Segwit which was around 40% by this time.
And that brings us to the whole game theory angle Mechanic likes to trot out, that miners won't risk having blocks thrown out. It's impossible to say what the threshold for this is, but suffice to say miners care a lot less about non merchant nodes than they care about nodes processing and securing large amounts of Bitcoin. Big exchanges, large payment networks, perhaps big companies using BTCPay through them. Lightning backbone nodes. None of these has announced they're activating 110 as far as I've seen.
Miners don't change what they're doing over a bunch of Start9 nodes deciding they want different rules. Heck half of them can barely be asked to pay attention to Bitcoin at all. If you're curious, yes, I did go checking recent earnings calls for the publicly traded miners, and no, none of them had a single mention of BIP110.
The good news is, this being a huge nothingburger is because the spam situation is mostly not an issue. It's true that they can burn a bunch of resources to put data on chain. But this is not a sustainable endeavor. It's at most short lived. It's not ideal, but this is the nature of a decentralized system. Sometimes the monetary use has to out compete other uses in a free market. I for one don't worry it can't.
Arguably we could get back to mempool policy based filtering if (and only if) we can decentralize the hash rate. Centralized mining means that miners with enough hash can operate out of band channels like Slipstream to totally bypass the p2p network. Attempting to filter in that environment only serves to reduce visibility of transactions that will be mined, while giving those miners extra profit (to potentially further centralize hash). But if you can get everyone to agree to filters (like we do with the dust limit) then they can work. The social side of that isn't remotely easy and I don't think it'd likely go far, but it would be a valid option if people really find the mempool congested beyond what they could tolerate.
In the meantime, finding good layering solutions to require less space is another way forward. CTV and CSFS are the most promising methods we have for making things like Ark work without sucking. To get Bitcoin to 8 billion+ users, some sort of endeavor like this is unavoidable.
Anyway, hope that's a decent overview.

And yea, that's about 470 lbs of rice and beans. It's a lot -- but it's also actually more surprisingly doable for ~$600 or so.

You can either get spam that pays MARA through Slipstream and bypasses the p2p network, or you can recognize that policy filters in a centralized mining regime don't work and focus on the main issue: miner centralization.
One part of that is: take away their ability to monetize out of band transmission, and stop it from doing further damage to monetary use cases through a lack of visibility of mempool conditions.
Fix centralization and we can talk about policy as a spam mitigation tool.

So Core supporters and anti-spam anti-BIP-110 are the two sides of a controled fight?
Yea, that doesn't really seem plausible.
Core overshot by removing datacarriersize even as an option as it previously existed, but ultimately was reacting to miner centralization causing miners to process out of band transactions for a fee because they could (due to centralization). More transactions going out of band was worse than the impact of spam (particularly prunable spam). They went way further than necessary, but the direction looks soundly rooted in the situation.
110 overshoots in an attempt to lock things down. So much so that there is next to no support from merchant nodes (armies of start9 installs not meaning much of anything).
Near term, practically neither of these actually changes much. 110 fails because it's entirely foolishly designed, while Core's move changes relatively little because honestly Librerelay had already solved the matter of out of out of band transactions. Core just enabled more visibility of likely blocks to people who run Core.
It does, however, drive social division, and props up the likelihood of multiple implementations, which can in turn drive ossification. I'm generally for implementations for user choice, though ossification would be a decidedly bad thing for a network that still very much needs to grow in layers. There's no reason anyone should be aiming to accept Bitcoin® by Chaincode, but there's also no reason to reject it by splintering any ability to upgrade (especially through opposition that 'just wants Bitcoin how it used to be.').
In any case seeing the breakdown of nodes and miners it does look like Bitcoin's immune system is working as intended, and not being dragged into this nonsense. Tweet and Note storms notwithstanding.

That's mostly how I'd characterize insurance in general.
But within shitcoinery, there are various subtypes -- Tether is a very different thing than Dogecoin which is a very different thing than Ethereum which is a very different thing than XRP. They're all grifts, but they're using different strategies to separate people from their money.
Tether plays on your fear of volatility (as well as promise of monetary flexibility
Dogecoin plays on the triviality with which you approach small sums of money
Ethereum plays on false utility value and outright lies about decentralization
XRP somewhat similarly plays on false utility value in a different sense (and do they even claim to be decentralized?)
I would argue Saylor's preferreds anyway are most similar to Tether's grift in that he's playing on fear of volatility to mint his paper, though in lieu of the monetary flexibility he's sweetening the deal with yield. Fear and greed are two very potent tools in the hands of a grifter.
But again, they're also exactly what drives the insurance business. There's a reason insurance is haram in Islam.

Curious what the other side of the conflict is that the Fabians are backing.
Because they almost always back two sides of a conflict -- the goal isn't to resolve it in a given direction, but rather, to destabilize the surrounding area with the conflict itself (so as to make swooping in later easier -- see: American Civil War, Everything post-Ottoman, every colour revolution ever). Makes me glad to see that it's not likely to succeed WITHOUT resorting to a URSF -- something that seems to bother some of the drummers behind this march almost more annoyed than the nominal spam issue itself (which has always been fairly obviously blown out of proportion, hence a lot of nonsense repeated about CSAM, block size, and even utxo set given that utreexo mostly makes this a solved issue).

Usually the idea with the accounts model is like, m/84'/0'/1...n'/0....n/0.....n
Last three fields being account, change, and index number for addresses. Change being 0 or 1 to designate change addresses.
The idea being that even if you lose your backup your brute forcing to recover wouldn't be quite so onerous. Just go sequential. The idea is separation, not obscurification.

Back on the phpbb, vbulletin, and other fora/boards, we didn't have content creators. We had users. Everyone was a user, and nobody was expected to compensate anyone, because it wasn't a market; it was a discussion board.
Tips could have been useful for helpful content, but the idea of wanting social media to attract a bunch of content creators is sort of an odd one. I for one am pretty glad Nostr hasn't turned into YouTube or Instagram.
Not that it'd be so bad if it did -- the lack of an algorithm means I could just mute or ignore them all anyway -- which I likely would.
I've never really been able to tell the difference between Instagram and Onlyfans. Except I guess that I don't think I'd call EVERYONE on Onlyfans a whore.

We are about 250 years late on finishing the revolution and bringing it home to London -- I wouldn't protest the move.
With any luck Canada, having seen the dissolution of their puppet master, could even get back to acting like a civilized country.
Very hopeful vision for the future.
As for the American bond market, I think the stablecoin bros have a few tricks up their sleeves. Brent Johnson's idea that we're just leaving the era of the American republic and toward the era of the American empire seems not entirely off the mark. There's a LOT of folks around the planet that have dollar denominated liabilities that serve as some pretty solid pain points to leverage.
This part is perhaps less hopeful for the future -- at least, depending where you're at.

It'd have been interesting in a college dorm too. IF it were widely used.
I somewhat doubt that the kids today would jump on it as much as we jumped on some tech back in my day though. I2Hub, and even Facebook (in 2004) spread like WILDFIRE from word of mouth.
Something tells me just being able to communicate off of the internet rather than on it wouldn't be quite as exciting to the average student though, while being able to download whole movies in 15 minutes (when it'd take hours on a home connection) or get the sort of connections that Facebook offered at the time (we're talking pre-newsfeed let alone pre-general public here) were some pretty awesome things to jump in on.

That said, even BLE being nearly useless is only true except when people are actually motivated. It clearly has had some success in a few mass protest movements.
I'm still personally surprised Briar doesn't get more love. I like Bitchat for realtime chats but Briar seems more interesting for a bit more of a store and forward approach which helps in that while you're still limited by range on Bluetooth, you at least get to "extend" that a bit by making use of time a bit more. Not entirely unlike some of the design of Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB) which was a cool idea in theory but in practice I always found it to just be a mess.
I have a softspot for store and forward though, being a former BBS sysop...

I just generally feel it's divided two groups of people who otherwise all agreed than mining centralization is bad. But yes I'm aware from the technical side of things there isn't a huge gulf.
But whatever, Bitcoiners fighting Bitcoiners is how we do things. Especially in bear markets.
I don't entirely look forward to trying to get mempool filters to be the norm again once we solve the centralization issue. I do think many on the 110 side don't see the importance of keeping transactions in the p2p network rather than just seeing those miners get paid even more for running slipstream and similar platforms. I also think too many on the Core side seem to be throwing in the towel rather than seeing rolling back datacarriersize as a tactical retreat.
And I think we've all given Citrea far more publicity than their shitty rollup deserves. It's not central to this, and it's not worth doing anything over.

The idea that Core changed Bitcoin inherently is another one of those twists of the truth. The reality is, nothing about Knots meant you couldn't open up datacarriersize either. It's not a 'hack' -- it's a configuration file option.
I'm not thrilled with Core governance, and do still run Knots (without 110 activation of course). Keeping an eye on others like Utreexod, Florestad, Libbitcoin, and eben ProductionReady (not holding my breath here). Chaincode's funding is definitely an incentive distortion and the culture is indeed problematic at this point as folks like Jon Atack and Hodlonaut have pointed out.
But the knee jerk reaction of BIP-110 is failure to see the whites of their eyes before firing.
Stratum v2 and Datum so that F2Pool and others DON'T have the veto authority on ANYTHING is the way forward. And if we have to get reckless with am activation around anything, that's where it may be more warranted. You don't just risk potentially huge reorgs over a 1 year patch that doesn't even do half the things its being pitched to plebs for.

Mostly all the charlatans spreading complete nonsense. Like that it's how Bitcoin was before Core changed datacarriersize. Those got through just fine with librerelay, which helped eat Slipstream's lunch. And this idea that without spam we'd have a smaller chain. Sure -- and without use our chain could be as small as the BCH chain. But we have a 4 MB limit, and that's being observed, so no size within that range is outside what any node signed up to store. And if they're putting it in op return, it's actually less of a computational weight, as is is less script to process, and fewer forever utxo's added as dust. Though, utreexo does seem a reasonable option to solve the dust issue, either from normal spam or outright attacks which had always been a looming possibility from those who'd seek to effectively DoS Bitcoin.
The CSAM FUD is especially rich. Never thought I'd see think of the children used to whip Bitcoiners into a frenzy like a bunch of boomers. All the more amusing given that we have demonstrably seen jpegs in BIP110 compliant transactions, which even the people who in one breath use the CSAM argument will admit in the next.
Mining centralization is the issue that made datacarriersize and mempool policy in general ineffective at filtering spam. Which is worth filtering, though is hardly the existential threat the Kratter Kult makes it out to be. As long as Slipstream is an option, policy for anything cannot be useful, and that is the point of focus we should be working toward. Not saying many aren't -- but 110 is a distraction. A knee jerk, 'we have to do SOMETHING' distraction. One which at best does nothing useful.

Suffice to say I'm thrilled to be hearing some stirring in the Stratum v2 space.
I wish that I thought all the hashrate rental was going to be a sustained push on the centralization angle but I don't. Too many people burning money unsustainably who I expect will drop off sometime around August 8.
We'll see though. New people learning how Bitcoin works through experience at least is bound to have some benefits.

I've been thinking more through this and how it all stems from mining centralization.
Centralization is what enabled Slipstream and other back channel methods of sidestepping the p2p network, which itself causes some problematic incentives. The more filters you have, the less the p2p network would be used.
Citrea is noise more than anything. I have no sympathy for their use case. I'm not 100% on the monetary maximalist train (opentimestamps is fine) but would maintain vigilance to watch for things crowding out monetary use. I do think layers above all else will be necessary and for that to be done right we'll need covenants.
But I am opposed to the bullshit spam we can all recognize as such. However 110 doesn't address it in any meaningful way and if anything could detract from hash decentralization. The reason decentralizing hash matters so much is that if we can remove the possibility of Slipstream, mempool policy can do its job again.
The faction that wants there to be a 'THE' mempool can perhaps come up with a reason I give a shit about for why I'd agree with them, but it's not how Bitcoin ever worked before and making Citrea work is not something that'll motivate me to do anything.

The mempool filters broke because of mining centralization which enabled Slipstream. Slipstream bypassed the whole p2p network and benefitted the very miners who were most abusive. Removing the filter was a recognition of this reality. And yes, there's nonsense like Citrea and the idea of one unified mempool which is worth opposing, but it's not the signal here, nor the motivation that pushed it through.
Datum and Stratum v2 are indeed the best weapons we have to defend Bitcoin from centralization of miners. Decentralize the hashrate and maybe we can bring back policy filters that do more good than harm.
BIP-110 OTOH is a bunch of noise that distracts from the real issues, and has been a great way to proliferate false information about how Bitcoin works. My only hope is that when it fails people decide to get around to reading the Blocksize Wars.
As for spam, I assume you've seen that it's still trivial to post vile things in 110 compliant transactions (such as the image of Luke crying). Being expensive doesn't stop it, and if the concern is attacks that make node running immoral or illegal it clearly fails in this regard. The way to fight spam effectively is to have policy filters that work. Which is how Knots was designed from the beginning.

I gotta say Rustin, I'm pretty disappointed in the portrayal of spam being about data space. That is hard capped at 4 MB/block. Being opposed to using that space is to be opposed to Bitcoin being used.
Spam has other issues, sure. But the size on nodes is Simply noise.
