@nprofile…3vpz IMO, the web is cool because one can just write a demo and put it on a website, so anyone, regardless of technical ability, can play with it. Also, it will be there as long as the host and domain name are up. No need to worry about "I haven't touched this code for 10 years, can I still compile this code with all the new toolchains?"

@nprofile…96k2 @nprofile…hzcd If a C API only accepts null-terminated strings (no pointer/length version) and I have a string_view, I need to convert that string_view to a std::string to pass it to it safely. This negates the advantage of string_view, and I'd just stick with string in the first place (otherwise, in the worst case, std::string -> string_view -> string round-trip will happen)

2026-03-31 04:13:52 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…hzcd People complaining usually have something specific in mind. For example, for the null-terminated string, people want pointer + length instead. The proliferation of C APIs accepting null-terminated strings means that even if one writes a custom pointer + length representation, it can't be safely interoperated with those APIs (and this impacts the usability of C++ string_view as well).

@nprofile…dgz6 I think it makes sense for `char` to be the type the iterator returns (Unicode codepoint; Rust calls it `char` and Go calls it `rune`, for example). The terminology is messy since C used it to be a weird uint8 type,

I feel that it is fine to write what you have for now, but if you need to do this kind of pattern a lot, consider a crate like `anyhow`, where you can do something like
```
let config = match DnsConfig::load_default().context("failed to load system config")?;
```
And you can append context information to errors and print them in main.

@nprofile…3vpz Also, static typing kind of becomes a hindrance for this kind of frequent data transformation (no wonder "nanopass compilers" are more popularized in Scheme). Having 2 IR that look almost identical but have some small differences? With dynamic typing, one can just YOLO it. With static typing, it boils down to either duplicating a lot of types or using some generic sorcery.

2026-03-22 13:49:01 GMT

@nprofile…3vpz That's a tension I met when creating language projects as well. Making more IR formats/passes feels wasteful (and also takes a lot of effort), but it simplifies so many problems down the road

Trying to apply for jobs, and one job sent me this LeetCode-style coding challenge that I failed miserably. I am not that kind of person performing well under high pressure.
Choosing C++ was also a mistake. Their platform doesn't support debuggers, and STL index-out-of-bounds errors don't give me any information about where they occur. At the end, I am pretty much stuck in debugging hell with std::cout

I hope generators get more love in the C++ circle.
Unfortunately, I think a C++ coroutine-based generator has a non-trivial overhead compared to a hand-written iterator or state machine. It probably doesn't matter for a lot of use cases (like the example the author showed).

TIL "falling factorial":
(n)_k = n(n-1)...(n-k+1)
It's interesting that n!/(n-k)! is very often seen (pick from n choices, then pick from n - 1 choices, etc), but I didn't know if it has a single notation.
It's also interesting that with the "falling factorial" definition, one doesn't need to think about what the value of "negative factorial." It just works when k > n.

@nprofile…m28f Tricky question. In both C and C++, punning between pointers to unrelated types is undefined behaviour. It may "work" when you test it, but the compiler optimiser may also break it at any point. E.g.
```cpp
// It doesn't matter that foo and bar are layout-compatible
struct foo { int x; };
struct bar { int x; };
struct foo a = {42};
struct foo* a_ptr = &a;
struct B* b_ptr = a_ptr;
std::cout << b_prt->x; // undefined behaviour
```

@nprofile…juxj Also, I am not sure it's just me, but I find the singular identifier names for arrays hard to read. I guess you can change `vertex` to `vertices`, `point` to `points` and so on. @nprofile…juxj Nice!

@nprofile…3q9y Overreliance on system package managers (and the difficulty of building everything from source) is a major pain point for me when developing on Linux. @nprofile…69fy @nprofile…5nyw There are some differences. The book you follow is roughly trying to code a "Whitted ray tracer," while "Ray Tracing in One Weekend" has a "path tracer." With a path tracer, it is easier to have prettier images, though the performance can be a major problem

@nprofile…69fy @nprofile…5nyw Good book! I love its descriptive style compared to the prescriptive "here is the code you can copy" style in most resources in this area
I also once tried to code a ray tracer in OCaml (following "ray tracing in one weekend"), but didn't go too far

@nprofile…9rel Another thing about those "AI is not optional" folks is that they usually have a very shallow focus on what "AI" is (using black boxes, often with paid subscriptions, which showed their privilege). But also those things change with every updates so experience really doesn't matter much in the long term.

@nprofile…l0gk @nprofile…ghru Blocks as expressions are lovely. In C++, I often fake it with immediately-invoked lambda expressions. It is nice that Rust (and some other expression-oriented languages) support it.

Do you plan to add RSS at some point in the future? That's how I usually follow blogs.

@nprofile…cx5s Reminds me of PL research with its arcane notation involving a lot of Γ, ∆, ⊢, and τ.
Also reminds me of this video: https://youtu.be/33y9FMIvcWY?si=FjgQDjaKryIvyQUu

@nprofile…m3rs Nice stuff! Tinkering with personal website is the kind of content I really like to see!
I also want to migrate my notes to my main site for a long time now, but there is just too much work to do, and I am more interested in doing other stuff at the moment.

@nprofile…nuqs I remembered reading about using Poisson disc for plant placement a long time ago, though I never experimented with it

@nprofile…yspl @nprofile…l6qj centroids/extents are also useful when computing BVH, though they can be precomputed in a single pass before processing.

@nprofile…dl8k Sorry, I hope I didn't give the impression that one should throw away 4x4 matrices.
In the context of ray tracing, matrices are commonly used to represent object-to-world transformations, but they are not necessarily used for projection. Also, one can interoperate this kind of affine transformation matrices with a proper 4x4 matrix.
