A++ content. I was in a call with @nprofile…ju99 and @nprofile…975x this week, where this topic came up again.
We looked, and I thought Django's package size was 200M bigger than it actually is. Django is only 10.9 MB compressed, which is within ~1 MB of SQLAlchemy, which is kind of impressive to think about.
So running the Django ORM doesn't quite have the same mental tax as I have assumed all of these years.

So I used Claude Code to write a small tool that keeps my filters in sync across both platforms.
It is simple, scratches a personal itch, and already makes Bluesky feel more usable for me.

@nprofile…g2vu @nprofile…fsjf Great work. This is pretty cool.
Side-note: I might not quite understand how the "Django ORM feature support table" features line up with the "At-a-glance" numbers. If they are meant to be a count of the previous ✅s, they don't see to add up. MySQL had five boxes not checked, but records 17.
Do you see room to maybe highlight experimental features or third-party features as they might make their way into core, like vector fields?

It’s wild how **Django** has become an implicit standard in LLM benchmarks. Even when companies are not building in Django, they use it to measure AI code performance.
In **SWE-Bench Verified**, over **40% of the tasks come from the Django codebase** — but the benchmark focuses on tiny edits (median ~4 LOC), not the real complexity of maintaining production software.

I have found memories of going to the movies as a kid. Sadly, that experience is long gone. I will pay for a release if I can watch it from the comfort of my own home.
If I have to wait to watch a movie after it leaves the theaters, then I'll wait until it's streaming via one of the many platforms I already subscribe to. It makes no sense to pay more to watch a movie from home months after it was released when it's almost cheaper to buy a physical copy.

🤔 TIL UV supports pylock.toml aka PEP 751, which is the new "locked" requirements.txt file format.
https://docs.astral.sh/uv/concepts/projects/layout/#pylocktoml
This note caught my eye:
> Some of uv's functionality cannot be expressed in the pylock.toml format; as such, uv will continue to use the uv.lock format within the project interface.
I think I'm going to stick to uv.lock for a while and see how everything shakes out. I suspect it's only a matter of time before I default to pylock.toml.

Without the ability to do a web search, I don't find LLMs to be good for grabbing random facts.
A fun one to try is give it a list from a requirements.in file and ask it to give you the pypi and GitHub or whatever repo for each one.

2025-05-27 13:33:22 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…m624 Start about ~10 or 12 minutes from the end.
The tl;dr is that we are getting confused by LLM's willingness to always provide an answer because of how they are tuned. Which is annoying, and that's why I prefer the results I get from the APIs directly, because I have more options available.
Strangely, I'm not sure why my results were better other than Claude hit the web to find them.

@nprofile…typy @nprofile…arvx I like Pydantic AI's dynamic system prompts, which I use to log the current time and other contexts depending on what I'm trying to solve. I commonly use AI to help write and optimize my system prompts.
Several will have some extra notes or instructions that are added via a database or another data store. This makes it easier to make changes and test without deploying a new app.

2025-05-23 05:08:43 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…typy @nprofile…arvx Yes that's just an example of one I use to type in once a week that save me time to update it.
I use an LLM to keep my justfiles updated (not that prompt though) and I have one agent that can sync new/updates recipes across one or more justfiles (you pass the paths to it)
That was easier than trying to use copier or another app to sync a bunch of files. Sort of like backporting changes.

2025-05-22 14:03:59 GMT

🤔 Since I switched to Pydantic AI, I realized that I mostly update justfiles and rarely touch their code for various tasks.
I suspect that's the power of using prompts to perform tasks over trying to account for every possible coding scenario. Every month or two, I might update an .envrc file to bump my default model, but I'm always excited to make that change because my Agents/scripts get even better each time.

Second, I don't think people are seeing any of the good parts without trying a few sessions of Claude Code where they are reviewing the file changes.
I agree about the Assistant point, but it feels very much like writing a product review without actually trying out the product.

So you find the Django model, search for it, and update it. You tell them it's good.
A few days later someone asked why it's still outdated.
You check another model and realize it's duplicated. Maybe it's even in a flatpage-like model.
You feel victorious and tell them you got it this time.
An hour later, they ask if you can verify it. Again.

@nprofile…m624 🤣 they never match. This is also more of an Admin usability feature than a bug.

🤔 Two things in Django are a pain that have consumed too much of my mental energy this week:
1️⃣ Adding an inline image or images to blog posts or any content.
2️⃣ Searching across multiple models.
Bonus: Wagtail edition:
3️⃣ Sharing data with other devs, aka importing and exporting data out of Wagtail, is a HUGE pain.
4️⃣ Testing Wagtail models is also a pain for similar reasons as 3️⃣ . I want wagtail-bakery in the same spirit as django-bakery.

@nprofile…6q8x it's great. I paused my usage of it because of the lack of a find feature. I use that way more than I realized.

@nprofile…m624 I do this with a "Copy All URLs" extension once every week or so. It'll generate a markdown-friendly list of links that go into an Obsidian doc/folder.
It's a great life hack, and about once a month, I appreciate having them. The best make it into Raindrop too.

Cool. Fly suspended my managed database in a zone that won't let me unsuspend it to pull a backup after paying someone to help me update it last week. Timing couldn't be **better**. It's also St. Patrick's Day, which is also one of the busiest, if not the busiest, day of the year for it.

They appear to have run out of capacity, but suspending my **paid** instance is a shitty look.

@nprofile…70tq Ya, whether anyone will admit it or no, this was also a reason one of the core devs told me they would stick to the 3.x series name for at least 14 releases. (I was told this ~6 years ago)

I have hated LastPass for over a decade, but we have entered a new era.
🤔 Storing your passwords as a Google doc that you print into a PDF and share with your entire company is more secure than using LastPass levels of bad.
Do NOT use LastPass.

@nprofile…m624 @nprofile…7853 @nprofile…fkc9 I keep meaning to use this and I forgot about it.
There are so many ways to represent JSON; I think a TextArea is just the lowest-hanging fruit.
Plus, attaching a schema and then trying to validate it is kind of its own special hell. So I can see where that rabbit hole might be too daunting from the framework to want to take on.

@nprofile…m624 Of course. I think we are agreeing here, but if you run into some more advanced snippets/use cases I'd love to see them.
Overall, I'd like to see Django templates continue to evolve. Some of Python's more recent features would be a nice fit inside of Django's template language (switching to Jinja2 isn't what I'm talking about).
I'll have to write something up once my DSF queue is more caught up on.

@nprofile…m624 I like partials in the htmx context, but I fear I'm abusing them mostly in a way that I probably should have just written a template tag for the non-htmx use cases. 🤔
It's cool though, I can write a custom tempatetag any time I want.

Friends, it's been a while, but the Django Debug Toolbar was exactly what I needed to figure out whatever chaos was going on in the project that leans a little too much toward template inheritance.
It's been at least a decade since I last needed this, but here we are, and credit where credit is due.
