@nprofile…ral2 still feels a bit weird to call the G-construction a completion though, since it takes a formal object of the completion (lax diagrams in Cat) to the category that represents it

2025-11-11 21:41:00 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ral2 the 2-category of categories. I'm more confident in 1d: there you can take a category C and "freely add colimits of shape D" by passing to the category of diagrams C^D. I think this deserves to be called a completion. It's the same for lax colimits, except now you're taking lax diagrams in Cat.

2025-11-11 18:27:27 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ral2 yes in this case fix a base category C, then the G-construction is a completion with respect to lax diagrams of shape C

2025-11-11 17:13:53 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ral2 also sort of a level shift, so it's the oplax cocompletion for diagrams of a given shape

2025-11-11 17:07:43 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ral2 well just modulo a "co" since completion usually means you have limits

2025-11-11 16:43:33 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ral2 maybe it's because it's a lax colimit?

@nprofile…hszg @nprofile…773v that's a good one, but universal properties are just a description of the morphisms in a category. If important means most useful and not most fundamental then you are totally correct
