What's missing here is that day to day programmers at work might be using the AI tools differently and that will be really hard to account for.
Cursor create me a Mermaid diagram explaining this 50k LOC module I now need to work on because product people said it's a priority. Cursor debug this grpc memory leak causing production to crash the developer who wrote this is on vacation. Cursor convert these OpenAPI specs to zod because the wider team does a refactoring.

Are you following @npub1gv2…tlwl because every week he shows us how these LLMs or embedding or vision models can be useful. For years now he's doing this.
There's no question anymore that they can be useful and at the same time we need to ask ourselves what should they be used for. It's more of an ethical and social question than a technical one.
Also no doubt they're getting hyped up a lot but that doesn't mean they're completely useless either like a lot of folks want them to be.

I don't know how to estimate how big their harvested dataset is but it's gonna be in the hundreds of millions for sure.

Got a reply from LSM Apps re. my GDPR Request that they do store my data.
Here's how it all works:
1. LSM Apps provides a free app (Easy Contacts) for 10+ years, 2.5k reviews. From that and their own disclosure we can assume their user base is in the millions.
2. This app send all of the user's contacts to LSM Apps; at least full name, phone number.
3. LSM Apps shares this data with Lusha.
4. Lusha sells the data.

The Lusha GDPR Request went through and now I know where they got my private phone number from: it's

Which looks like unsuspecting apps but if you check their privacy policy and business registration, it's a data broker (again), explicitly sharing data with Lusha.

Some ten+ years ago there was a way to set up sieve rules in Thunderbird with an addin jf I recall correctly — and once set up that worked quite well. But it's a bit of the hacky kind.
There really should be a way ro have Thunderbird's junk scoring move mails automatically.

I just got a caller to go into their CRM and find out the source:
It's Lusha!
They're a data broker selling private data without user consent! I can find various complains about them online.
These fuckers are selling data on me — my private phone number included. I have zero idea where they got it from in the first place.
Gonna send them a GDPR Request that hopefully should stop downstream folks from getting my PII data into their systems.

The last two calls from today were from the UK and from Poland. In borh cases companies providing short term contractors for work.

Looks like my private phone number ended up in some sort of data broker.
For weeks now I'm getting unsolicited calls, and the folks calling me are like "We don't know where we got your number from; it's in our CRM system".
Welp, guess that's about it for phone for me?

Gotcha, agree with you there should have been better communication.
On the other hand they're probably going by numbers — what's the Linux market share; out of those folks how many are on a 6+ year old distribution. And that's not a high enough user base to put resources behind.
Let's wait and see how this develops before jumping to conclusions.

And here is where user expectations and reality are clashing.

is not meant as a user-friendly map or app or anything regular users are supposed to use.
It's simply a demo of what the OpenStreetMap data could produce but not meant for end users.
Turns out that's not what most users expect.

That means:
- data can be in the OpenStreetMap database but not yet rendered on the map
- data can be still on the map but already fixed in the OpenStreetMap database
and it's due to caching and re-rendering that the underlying OpenStreetMap database and the OpenStreetMap map can get of of sync.
For example: vandalism can be fixed in the database but still need some time for re-rendering to update the map.

Rendering and re-rendering the whole planet Earth continuously is expensive and takes a while. The result is cached so that whenever you go to that website you see the map immediately.

Alright #Mapstodon #OpenStreetMap There's still / again broad scale vandalism going on in our beloved map 😓
So let's clarify a couple of things! 🤓
There are practically zero checks for what goes into the OpenStreetMap database. You can create an account and delete a city. It'll be in the database immediately. The thinking is that the community will spot it and fix it ("self-healing map") and there are tools to check for vandalism in the map.
