yeah, but it is an opt-in model and these things can be handled on the social layer through reputation. Additionally, we are not talking about huge sums. A deposit of 5$ per user would already kill almost all spammers, the individual loss in a rug is low.

which is a perfectly viable model I think. It would even allow to make it free for honest users and very costly for dishonest ones. There's always the possibility of rugs by the relay operators, but that's the risk a user is taking.

How about some initial sats payment that is automatically reimbursed if the relay operator does not decide to slash it? That would allow for much higher prepayment but come at low cost for honest users

What did you expect? It's really just a protocol that allows a stream of notes to relays that distribute it to all connected clients. There is nothing inherent to stop bad people of posting anything they want. Obviously, this is a hard problem, else we would not have all the issues with this everywhere.

I am afraid a censorship resistant protocol allows a lot of garbage people to express their opinion / ideas. Clients do not yet offer sufficient protection here (like filtering of hateful speech / nudity etc.). Right now, censorship resistance is somewhat related to lack of moderation (which is the whole idea). Hopefully soon we will get algorithms (OS and exchangable) that we can choose to help us protect ourselves against content that we don't want to see.
