Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) and moringa (Moringa oleifera, often called the “miracle tree”) are both highly nutritious edible plants valued as “superfoods” or nutrient-dense greens, especially in homesteading, regenerative agriculture, and traditional diets.
Purslane is a low-growing, succulent annual weed (or cultivated green) that’s widespread and easy to forage or grow. Moringa is a fast-growing tree whose leaves (and other parts like pods) are commonly used. Both thrive in warm/hot climates like Mississippi and offer overlapping benefits but differ in growth habit, nutrient profiles, taste, and uses.
Nutrition Comparison (Approximate per 100g Fresh Leaves/Greens)
Values vary by variety, growing conditions, and freshness (dried moringa powder is more concentrated). Here’s a side-by-side based on common data:
• Calories: Purslane ~16-20 kcal; Moringa ~64 kcal (higher due to more protein/fiber).
• Protein: Purslane ~1.3-2g (lower); Moringa ~9.4g (much higher, a strong plant protein source with essential amino acids).
• Fat: Purslane very low (~0.1-0.4g), but standout for omega-3s (highest ALA among leafy greens, ~4mg/g fresh weight, low omega-6:3 ratio). Moringa ~1.4g (less emphasis on omega-3).
• Key Vitamins:
• Vitamin A (beta-carotene): Purslane exceptionally high (e.g., 1320 IU or ~396 µg, often tops vegetables); Moringa also strong (~378 µg).
• Vitamin C: Purslane ~21-26 mg; Moringa ~52 mg (higher in fresh leaves).
• Vitamin E: Purslane often highest among greens (~12-22 mg alpha-tocopherol).
• Others: Both provide B vitamins; moringa strong in B6, riboflavin.
• Minerals: Purslane rich in potassium (~494 mg), magnesium (~68 mg), calcium (~65 mg). Moringa higher in calcium (~185 mg), iron (~4 mg), and others like manganese.
• Other: Both high in antioxidants (purslane has betalains/flavonoids; moringa has quercetin, chlorogenic acid). Purslane has oxalates (caution for kidney stones). Moringa is more fiber/protein-dense.
Summary: Purslane excels as a low-cal, omega-3 powerhouse with top-tier vitamins A/E. Moringa is more calorie- and protein-dense, making it better for overall nutrition density, especially in powder form for supplementation.
Growth and Cultivation
• Purslane: Sprawling succulent “weed” — grows almost anywhere in full sun, poor/dry soils, warm weather. Very drought-tolerant, fast (harvest in weeks), self-seeding. Ideal for ground cover or interplanting in MS summers. Dies in frost but easy to start from seed/cuttings.
• Moringa: Fast-growing tree/shrub (up to 10-30+ ft if unpruned). Loves heat, full sun, well-drained soil; drought-tolerant once established. Great for Mississippi (tropical/subtropical). Prune for leaf production; can be grown in containers or as a “cut-and-come-again” plant. More perennial structure than purslane.
For your MS homesteading (Tate County area): Both fit well — purslane as an easy annual/foraged green, moringa as a productive tree for ongoing harvest (you’ve researched moringa before).
Taste and Culinary Uses
• Purslane: Mildly tart/lemony, salty, succulent/crisp (mucilaginous/slimy when cooked, like okra). Raw in salads, pesto, smoothies; cooked in soups, stir-fries, eggs, tacos. Stems, leaves, flowers, seeds edible.
• Moringa: Leaves mildly bitter/peppery (like arugula or grassier when powdered); pods like green beans/asparagus. Leaves raw/cooked like spinach, in curries, soups, smoothies, dal, tea. Pods in stews.
Purslane is more neutral/crunchy for fresh eating; moringa versatile but can be stronger-flavored.
Health Benefits (Both Have Strong Traditional/Research Support)
• Shared: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, blood sugar support, immune boost, nutrient gaps filler.
• Purslane standout: Omega-3 for heart/brain, potential antimicrobial, digestive aid.
• Moringa standout: Higher protein/minerals for energy, anemia support, possible blood sugar/cholesterol benefits.
Studies have even tested both together for metabolic benefits.
Practical Considerations
• Availability: Purslane is free/forageable (common weed). Moringa may need planting/establishing but yields more long-term.
• Cautions: Purslane oxalates (cook/blanch if concerned); moringa generally safe but leaves can be laxative in excess. Consult doctor with conditions (e.g., your back health/supplement use).
• Storage/Prep: Both best fresh; moringa dries well into powder.
Which is “better”? Depends on needs — purslane for easy omega-3s/vitamins A/E and foraging in your setup; moringa for protein, minerals, and tree-based production.

An alternate solution might be to donate ASST which should be much easier to manage. Plus :
Year-over-year growth could exceed 100% initially.
• 2027 Revenue: Continued growth.
• Earnings: Path to profitability is uncertain in the near term but some models forecast earnings growth of ~72% per annum in coming years as the business scales. EPS growth estimates are even higher in optimistic cases (~138% p.a.).
If not paying taxes,
manage with stop losses to prevent declines in value.

Molasses (or another simple sugar/carbohydrate source like brown sugar or unsulfured blackstrap molasses) is the ideal addition to turn your organic matter + biochar + shellfish mix into a high-performing, living organic fertilizer.
Your base combination is already a strong foundation used in regenerative gardening and research:Organic matter (e.g., compost, manure, plant residues, or food scraps) supplies carbon, some nitrogen, and a starting microbial population.
Biochar acts as a "sponge" with enormous surface area that improves soil structure, water retention, and nutrient-holding capacity (it prevents leaching and creates habitat for beneficial microbes).
Shellfish (shells or waste like oyster, crab, or shrimp) adds calcium carbonate for pH buffering/liming, chitin (which slowly releases nitrogen and suppresses certain pests/nematodes), plus trace minerals and phosphorus in many cases.
Together they create a slow-release, calcium-rich amendment that supports long-term soil health. Research shows similar mixes (e.g., oyster shell-functionalized biochar added to manure + straw) dramatically speed up composting, increase stable humus formation, boost microbial diversity, and improve nutrient availability.
Why add molasses?Raw biochar can temporarily "steal" nutrients from soil as it colonizes, so it needs charging (inoculation with nutrients and microbes). Molasses provides an easy food source (carbohydrates/sugars) that rapidly multiplies beneficial bacteria and fungi. This:Accelerates breakdown of the shellfish chitin and organic matter into plant-available forms.
Loads the biochar pores with biology and nutrients from your mix (so it releases them slowly to plants instead of tying them up).
Reduces odors during fermentation/composting and creates a more biologically active final product.
This exact approach—biochar + crab/shellfish shell compost + molasses—is used in practical DIY recipes for supercharged soil amendments.
Simple recipe to make itMix your base (by volume): Roughly 40–50% organic matter, 40–50% biochar, 5–10% crushed shellfish shells/waste (crush shells for faster breakdown; fresh waste works but smells more initially).
Add molasses: Use about 5% by volume or 2–4 tablespoons per gallon of mix (dilute in a little dechlorinated water first for even distribution). Alternatives: brown sugar or a bit of flour work in a pinch.
Moisten and charge/ferment:Add non-chlorinated water until the mix is damp like a wrung-out sponge (not soggy).
Optional boost: A handful of finished compost, worm castings, or aged manure if your organic matter is mostly dry plant material.
Stir well, cover loosely (e.g., in a bucket or tarp-covered pile), and let it sit 1–4 weeks (or longer for full composting). Stir occasionally. It should smell earthy, not rotten.
Use it: Apply as a soil amendment (5–10% by volume in beds/pots), top-dress, or brew into a compost tea. It becomes a balanced, microbe-rich, slow-release fertilizer great for most plants.
Optional extras for even better results (if you have them)A splash of compost tea, liquid fish emulsion, or fresh urine (diluted) for extra quick nitrogen during charging.
Effective microorganisms (EM-1) or whey from yogurt/kefir as an inoculant.
This method keeps everything organic, low-cost, and local-waste-based while maximizing the synergistic benefits of your ingredients. The final product improves soil biology, nutrient efficiency, and plant resilience far beyond plain fertilizer. If your organic matter is very low-nitrogen (e.g., mostly leaves/wood chips), you could also layer in more nitrogen-rich material like grass clippings or manure first—but molasses alone usually gets the job done beautifully. Let me know specifics about your organic matter or shellfish type if you want tweaks!
