@npub1k4q…3lsq Yeah. I do my morning eggs basted (learned from my dad, roughly 50 years ago), which means without a lid, it isn’t an egg pan. Caraway’s regular sauce-pan’s lid fits the small fry pan, but I wasn’t about to spend $140 to get a pan I don’t need just to get the lid for the fry pan I wanted.

2024-01-28 15:01:03 GMT

Last Tuesday morning, Caraway started selling a (glass) lid for their mini 8” fry pan. I ordered the pan and lid about 10 minutes after the website went live (I saw the page with no lids listed, hit refresh, and saw the lids). Received it yesterday, and used it this morning. Worked well, though I will have to start heating the pan a bit earlier (30-45 seconds, I’d guess) in my breakfast routine. But I’m a satisfied customer. https://www.carawayhome.com/products/mini-fry-pan/?color=cream #cookware #breakfast

As I mentioned in a conversation last night, I’ve decided to bring Mead Made Easy back online, along with updates I’ve accumulated in various notes over the past 30 years. It’s a fair chunk of work, but people still find the book useful, so why not?
One of the things I’m going to need is an editor. And the pay for this will be… minimal, since I don’t plan on selling paper books or ebooks. But if you’d be willing to be an early reader, and offer editing suggestions, I could use the help.

@npub1u3f…nne2 I talked to one of the drivers the other day (he was pulling up as we were finishing our walk, and there were no car tracks in our driveway yet, so I took the package and saved him having to drive in the snow) and he said that he always reads the delivery instructions now, because everyone wants something different. So the good drivers will check that.
My neighbor had one who left her package in the street while it was snowing. The rug inside got soaked (and returned).

@npub1u3f…nne2 I have “please do NOT ring doorbell” as part of my delivery instructions, since Amazon drivers seem to have the ability to show up just as I’m taking a nap, whatever time that might be.
But if you put something about the doorbell in the delivery instructions, you can check “did not follow delivery instructions” as a reason for dinging the driver.

I attempted to send an email to a mailing list I’m on where someone might know what the right thing to do with the battery is. When I don’t plan to use my MacBook for a month (which is basically all the time now), should I leave it plugged in so it’s ready to go, or unplug it so the battery is dead when I actually need to use the stupid thing?
And then the mail to the list wouldn’t go through, and I’m emailing the admin asking if something is broken. And shaving a yak. https://woodworking.group/@davepolaschek/111734051528886083

If you need to keep using the stretchy cords, stretch them as tight as possible, so they can’t stretch more and let your load shift. Here’s another load, showing the stock luggage rack in the middle.

They stretch a very little (less than 10% for the non-stretchy bit, and less than 25% in the stretchy bit) and secure things well to either the rear seat or the luggage rack on my KLR 650. You can see them holding the rearmost bag in this photo of me on the way to Alaska in 2013.

@npub1qk5…jlda We also routinely get virga, where it is raining, perhaps only a few hundred feet off the ground, but it is not raining at ground level here because the air is so dry that the rain evaporates before reaching the ground. Again, the weather radar can’t tell, but often says “rain” when we’re dry.

@npub1qk5…jlda We’ve had similar days when I’ve woken up and thought “foggy,” but the weather service said “cloudy,” and I think the main difference was that they couldn’t tell that the clouds had reached all the way down to the ground here (because of mountains between here and the weather radar, they can only see about 500 feet above ground level, no lower).

@npub1lya…7hp0 Yes, you remove any that’s undissolved. But I had acetic acid 6x as strong as the normal vinegar, which meant a LOT more dissolved. And then I stored it in the fridge, which meant a lot of the iron acetate fell out of solution.

2023-11-07 21:51:10 GMT

- reply

@npub1lya…7hp0 That’s possible. I’ve been reading an article on how to produce the iron acetate, and there are a number of things that could have happened. I used 30% acetic acid, and kept adding steel wool until no more would dissolve, which will result in enough iron acetate in the solution that it will precipitate out. Then I stored it in a fridge which precipitated more. So I’m not sure what I really used, I guess.
But for now, I’ll just enjoy the happy accident.

2023-11-07 18:35:35 GMT

It’s out of the clamps. Here’s my new file (and rasp) till. When I applied the iron acetate to the oak within, I apparently didn’t get all the hide glue scrubbed off after putting in the magnets to hold the files, and also the iron acetate was now two weeks old, so rather than black, I got (mottled) brown. The outer case and drawer front got a kakishibu treatment, and should darken over the next month. The drawer is full of cards, needle files, and spare handles. #woodworking

Here’s a single shot showing the progression with the gouge. Left to right: cut one direction; cut both directions; cleaned out the corners with a #2 (skew) gouge; cut the second time from the left and right; and finally, cleaned out the second time.
After the cleaning, I will take a trimmed chip brush (second picture) and run it down the groove to clean up a little further.

@npub1vay…g38e You’ll have “reaction wood” in there, almost certainly. Some people say that’s an insurmountable problem, but I deal with that sort of thing regularly. Yes, the wood will move every time you cut it. So cut oversized and plan to lose a little. And give it plenty of time to stop moving before you decide to flatten it (which may still cause it to move more). With a 12-15” trunk, you should have plenty of good wood, and reaction wood is sometimes figured very nicely.

I think the carving on the drawer-front is now complete. And I guess I’m going to finish it with kakishibu and oil. Unless I change my mind. #woodworking #woodcarving

And here’s the lineup for the #Lamy show this Saturday. Note that all times are in New Mexico Musician Standard Time, and may not exactly align with reality.

Busy domestic morning. Second load of laundry of the day is in the drier. Phở broth is out of the sous vide after 24 hours simmering at 195F (started from marrow bones and raw veg). Almost 5 pounds of brisket just went into the sous vide (30 hours at 155F should do it). Time to fold the first load of laundry, then get cleaned up before going to pick up some neighbors for lunch. Also, the morning walk has been walked, and the neighborhood doggos scritched, which is a vital part of any morning.

Another local event, on November 4th, from 1-6, the annual Day of the Dead concert / fundraiser in #Lamy will be held at the church. And the Poki Taco food truck will be on hand.

Just noticed this event down by Mountainair in early December. It’s a little far from home for us, but if you’re going to be in the area, having over a thousand luminarias set up at the ruins at Abó sounds like it would be stunning to look at. https://www.mountainairdispatch.com/thank-you-nov2023/

#Jigsaw puzzle season has officially begun. This was a quick, fun puzzle from Artifact Puzzles. Took us about an hour from start to finish, though the repeated connectors and false edges tricked us a couple times. I’d say medium, rather than medium-hard. https://www.artifactpuzzles.com/products/ecru-puzzles-mystery-puzzle-12

@npub10fm…x0qg Yeah, I was happily surprised by the VOC levels, but I haven’t finished anything for a couple weeks, so I’ll have to watch the monitor when I start oiling stuff sometime next week.

@npub1t59…swnr Since retiring (but not having achieved “Medicare age”), I’ve been somewhat happily surprised by how cheaply I can get health insurance on the exchange. Of course, that changes if I make any real money, but I was expecting to pay significantly more for health insurance than I am paying.

@npub16uw…aj3x I tried opening a previous toaster oven (I’ve had 3 of this particular model over the years). Getting to the noise emitter proved to be more hassle than I felt comfortable with.

@npub1ktc…9fvg I owned a tilt-shift lens for my Nikon film and digital SLRs. It was neat, but I basically stopped using it at some point, having realized that I could do everything it could do in image editing software. When I sold off my film and digital 35mm equipment, moving to micro four-thirds, I didn’t pick up a new tilt-shift lens, and have found that I’m just fine using the default tilt and shift available in the iOS image editing. I don’t even need to pay for editing software any more.

I wish it were possible to silence the speaker on my toaster oven, so I could start cooking in the morning without waking my sweetie. In particular, the “I’m done preheating” triple-beep wakes her up every time. But I’ve got some marrow bones that need roasting before I pop them in the sous vide (which *also* has a loud obnoxious beep when it’s done preheating) for 30 hours to make stock.

@npub13m5…lese Yeah, but I’ve been adding to the kit for five or six years, and just recently feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it. Traditionally, joiners didn’t carve, and carvers didn’t join, but rather worked together. Me, I like both, but probably won’t ever get practiced enough at either to excel.

@npub13m5…lese I’ve got the following out and in use: #1-25, #1-12, #2-6, Bent #5-6, #5-12,#5-30 and a #7-14. The 1s and 2 did the zig-zag border; the 5s and 7, plus the #2 did the flower; and the bent 5, smaller 1 and 2 did most of the grounding. Oh, there’s also a small V45, maybe 3 wide, that I used on the leaves.

Part of the reason for the carving is that I’ve been reading Paul Hasluck’s “Manual of Traditional Woodcarving” and want to try out some of what I’ve learned. #CurrentlyReading https://isbn.nu/9780486234892

I haven’t been posting a lot about what’s going on in the shop lately. Mostly because the “getting ready for winter” tasks around home kept me out of the shop for most of the past two weeks. But this week I’m getting time out there again, and I’m wrapping up a till to hold files and rasps. It’s going to have a drawer, which I’ve started carving the front of. It’s just pine, but it has my first half-blind dovetails ever, and I figured some carving would be nice, too. #woodworking #woodcarving

Went down to Nuckoll’s in Lamy for some live music. There was a movie filming, and the band started late and took a long break. Between 4 and 5:30 (with music putatively from 4-6), they played 3½ songs. Not impressed. First time I haven’t tipped for live music in decades.
The Bobcat Bite food truck will be opened when the holiday trains run, so beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving, but likely there won’t be any food trucks before then.

And the second video from this afternoon’s experiment, from La Cañada de Los Alamos down to Eldorado. Using time-lapse mode on the iPhone in this way is probably abusive, and there are multiple warnings about mounting an iPhone on a 1-cylinder motorcycle wrecking the camera, but this video shows the foliage change from just a little uphill from us (there is a lumber mill in Cañada de Los Alamos) to where we live (piñon juniper scrub).

@npub1qk5…jlda I do not. I picked up a dashcam app for my iPhone, and if that doesn’t work, I may just use the phone’s built in time-lapse camera. But I plan to experiment a bit.
I learned to ride on the KLR650. The BMW has more horsepower than many cars, but it also weighs 320kg without me on it (and I add another 20 stone).

@npub1qk5…jlda That looks like a nice little ride. I spent an hour on my 1600cc BMW today, just riding to the gas station and back home, topping up the tank with non-ethanol gasoline, then putting in Sta-bil for the winter storage. I much prefer smaller bikes for daily use, but the big Beemer is nice for road trips with my sweetie (photo from 2017)
I hope to get out this pm on the KLR650 to shoot the movie of changing terrain around here, but that’s an afternoon task due to the angle of the sun.
