Bitcoin was 18 months old and worth fractions of a penny when, at 3:02 AM UTC on July 15, 2010, a Bitcointalk user named mizerydearia asked a bold question: shouldn't Bitcoin be submitted to the Unicode Consortium for its own currency symbol?
Unicode is the standard that decides which characters exist in computing. If a symbol isn't in it, you can't type it, search it, or display it as text. The obvious candidate, ฿, was already taken by the Thai baht (U+0E3F), so Bitcoin would need a genuinely new character.
The visual already existed. Satoshi himself had posted the B with two vertical strokes as Bitcoin's logo on February 24, 2010. Everyone knew what the symbol looked like. It just didn't exist in any font, on any keyboard, in any standard.
Then, nothing. The idea sat idle for four years while Bitcoin climbed from fractions of a penny past $1,000. In June 2014 the Bitcoin Foundation formed a Standards Committee to pursue the submission. The formal proposal reached the Unicode Consortium on October 3, 2015, was confirmed that November, added to the standard on November 1, 2016, and on June 20, 2017 Unicode 10.0 shipped with ₿ encoded as U+20BF.
In 2010, Bitcoin had no real price and a handful of developers, and someone still asked for a place next to the dollar sign. The question came seven years before the answer.

July 15, 2020 (6 years ago) — The Day Teenagers Hijacked Twitter's God Mode
On July 15, 2020, the largest social media security breach in history played out in a single afternoon. One hundred and thirty high-profile accounts were taken over: Obama, Biden, Musk, Gates, Bezos, Buffett, Bloomberg, Apple, Uber, CashApp. All of them used to post Bitcoin scam tweets. The attackers never exploited a single line of code. They picked up the phone and asked nicely.
The technique is called vishing. Posing as Twitter's own IT staff, the crew called employees and talked them into handing over internal VPN credentials. Once inside, they found an admin panel called Agent Tools: a support tool used daily that could override the security settings of any account on the platform, swap the email, kill 2FA, hand over full control. They used it first to steal rare short Twitter handles to sell to gamers. Then someone escalated.
Around 8 PM UTC the scam tweets started. Musk first, then Obama, Biden, Gates, Bezos, the rest in rapid succession. Twitter's response was drastic: lock every verified account out of tweeting until engineers could contain the breach. The scam wallets collected over 400 Bitcoin transactions totaling just over $100,000. These teenagers had temporary control over accounts that could have moved markets or triggered an international crisis. They ran a double-your-money scam.
Bitcoin caught them. Every transaction landed on a public ledger. Analysts traced the flows within hours. When the crew tried to cash out through exchanges, KYC checks flagged them. The ledger they thought was anonymous became the evidence trail that led to their doors. The mastermind, Graham Clark, was 17 years old and lived in Tampa, Florida. He was arrested 16 days after the hack, charged as an adult with 30 felonies, and sentenced to 3 years. His associates, including "PlugwalkJoe" Joseph O'Connor, received sentences stretching to 5 years.
They chose Bitcoin because they thought it was untraceable. It was the opposite.

July 14, 2016 (10 years ago) — The Startup That Turned Twitter Handles Into Bitcoin Addresses
On this day in 2016, Seattle startup iPayYou launched Pay-by-Twitter: send Bitcoin to any Twitter handle, no wallet address needed. An automated tweet notified the recipient, who clicked a link to claim the funds as bitcoin or convert them to dollars deposited into their bank. The same trick worked with email addresses. Founder Gene Kavner, a veteran of Amazon, Microsoft, and Expedia, was aiming at Twitter's 310 million monthly users.
The elegance was in what it removed. No copying a 34-character address, no QR codes, no "which wallet do you use?" The Twitter handle WAS the payment address. One feature was almost heretical: you could cancel a payment after sending it. Bitcoin transactions are famously irreversible, and iPayYou deliberately softened that edge to make Bitcoin feel like a normal payment app.
The idea had a predecessor. ChangeTip had let people tip Bitcoin via Twitter mentions, got acquired by Airbnb in 2016, and was shut down. iPayYou positioned itself as the fuller successor: a complete wallet, not a tipping toy.
The punchline came from Kavner himself. Three months later, on October 27, 2016, announcing a gift card marketplace, he said: "the world of Bitcoin is desolate. The lack of fully integrated, seamless ways to spend bitcoin for everyday goods and services is what iPayYou aims to fix." The company eventually pivoted entirely to gift cards, and the Twitter wallet was discontinued. iPayYou had solved the "where do I send it?" problem beautifully. But in 2016, even frictionless sending couldn't answer the harder question: what do I spend it on?

July 14, 2016 (10 years ago) — The $550 Million Man Walks Out on $95,000 Bail
After 11 months in Japanese detention, Mark Karpeles, the man who ran MtGox when 850,000 BTC vanished, stepped out of jail in Tokyo, visibly thinner and forbidden to leave the country.
MtGox had been the world's largest Bitcoin exchange until its February 2014 collapse, when it reported 850,000 BTC missing (roughly 200,000 were later recovered from an old cold storage wallet). Karpeles, the French-born programmer who had acquired the exchange in 2011, was arrested in Tokyo in August 2015 on charges of embezzling ¥341 million (about $3.2M) of client funds and inflating Bitcoin balances in bogus accounts. He denied the embezzlement, saying he intended to repay and that the data manipulation was done for the company.
Japan's pretrial system held him for months without trial, with prosecutors re-arresting him on new charges to extend detention. On July 12, 2016, the Tokyo District Court finally approved bail: ¥10 million, about $95,000. Two days later he paid it and walked out.
The scale mismatch was striking. At roughly $650 per bitcoin, the missing 850,000 BTC were worth about $550 million; the bail came to about 0.017% of that. Who paid it was never confirmed, though speculation pointed to his Japanese wife, who had relocated to Canada.
The verdict took another three years. In 2019 he was acquitted of embezzlement and convicted only of data manipulation, receiving a suspended sentence. For the largest Bitcoin catastrophe in history, the man in charge served no time beyond the detention he had already endured.

July 13, 2011 (15 years ago) — The Countdown to Brazil's First Bitcoin Exchange
On July 13, 2011, developer Leandro César announced on Bitcointalk "The countdown to the first brazilian Bitcoin exchange!" and linked to mercadobitcoin.com.br. Visitors found no order book and no wallet — just a ticking clock, built in Flash. Forum regular Fireball pointed out the obvious: the site "only has a countdown on it." César was announcing a product he hadn't finished building, written in Python, wagering publicly that Brazil would want a Bitcoin exchange by the time the clock hit zero. One early reply stands out in hindsight. Roger Ver, already one of Bitcoin's loudest evangelists, wrote back: "Bitcoins are going to change the way the world does business. Nice work!"
The timing looked terrible. A month earlier Bitcoin had touched roughly $31, its first speculative peak, then crashed into single digits while commentators wrote obituaries. But César moved fast: within nine days the countdown had given way to a registration page — a Google Form whose first dropdown option was "Vender Bitcoins" (Sell Bitcoins).
Brazil turned out to be the right bet. The largest economy in South America, ninth largest in the world in 2011, and its currency was barely served by the international exchanges. Mercado Bitcoin took BRL deposits through Banco do Brasil, plus a second rail that dates the era: Liberty Reserve — then just another way to move money online, shut down by the US government in 2013, its founder later convicted in a scheme that laundered $6 billion. Early exchanges built on whatever rails existed.
Of the exchanges born in 2011, almost none survived. Tradehill closed within a year, Bitcoinica was hacked three times and folded, and MtGox collapsed in 2014. Mercado Bitcoin became Latin America's dominant Bitcoin exchange and, 15 years on, it's still trading.

July 13, 2011 (15 years ago) — The Kernel Hacker Who Wrote Bitcoin's Mining Engine
On July 13, 2011, at 03:02 in the morning forum time, Con Kolivas opened the official CGMiner support thread on Bitcointalk: a GPU miner written in C for Linux, Windows, and OSX, "provided entirely free of charge by the programmer in his spare time." Plenty of miners were circulating in mid-2011. This one would outlast every generation of hardware it ran on.
The headline feature was dynamic intensity. In 2011 your miner and your gaming rig were the same machine, so CGMiner throttled itself automatically the moment your GPU was needed for a game or video playback, then scaled back to full hashing when the computer went idle. Under the hood it ran the phatk OpenCL kernel with the BFI_INT, BITALIGN, and VECTORS optimizations of the era, but users praised something less glamorous: it could restart dead GPU threads on its own. Replies called it the "best one so far," reliable and low overhead.
Then someone in the thread did a double take: "are you the linux kernel scheduler guy?" He was. "Yes, I am the linux kernel scheduler guy, -ck." Kolivas wrote BFS, the Brain Fuck Scheduler, Linux kernel patches devoted entirely to desktop responsiveness. His day job: anesthesiologist. An Australian anesthesiologist who rewrote how Linux schedules your desktop, mining Bitcoin on the side.
That obsession with responsiveness is exactly what dynamic intensity was, a miner that yields to the human using the machine. CGMiner went on to add FPGA support, then ASICs, hardware that did not exist when it launched, and became the standard mining software for years. Not bad for a side project posted at 3am.

July 13, 2012 (14 years ago) — Bitcoinica's Third Hack Drains the Victim Recovery Fund
In September 2011, a 17-year-old programmer in Singapore named Zhou Tong launched Bitcoinica, Bitcoin's first leveraged trading platform. Users could bet on BTC's price with borrowed money, and nothing like it existed. Within months it was handling more volume than most exchanges.
Then the hacks began. On March 1, 2012, attackers compromised Linode, Bitcoinica's hosting provider, and drained 43,554 BTC. In the fallout, the source code leaked, and buried in that code, in plaintext, sat the API key to Bitcoinica's MtGox account. On May 11, a second attack took another 18,547 BTC and Bitcoinica shut down for good. Co-founder Tihan opened a MtGox account to hold what remained: a recovery fund, the only realistic path to repayment for hundreds of customers. One Bitcointalk user, DarkEmi, had deposited 5,000 BTC, most of his savings. Another had wired $38,626 saved over two years and verified his claim three times.
The detail that decided everything: the API key in the leaked code was never rotated. Not after the first hack, not after the second. For months, anyone who read the code held a working key to the fund meant to make the victims whole. On July 12, someone finally used it. Within hours, roughly 40,000 BTC and $40,000 in cash drained out of the account, flowing through AurumXchange into Liberty Reserve, a digital currency the US government would shut down for money laundering in 2013. The next morning, developer genjix broke the news on Bitcointalk: Bitcoinica had been robbed a third time, and this time it was the victims' money.
Two weeks later, AurumXchange published its findings and the story turned. The laundering account traced back to [email protected]. Erik Voorhees recognized the address at once; he had corresponded with it for months. It belonged to Zhou Tong. MtGox added that the account had been opened from a Microsoft Singapore IP, where Zhou worked. Zhou posted that same day, denied everything, named a former associate, Chen Jianhai, as the thief, and offered 5,000 BTC in compensation.
Forum veterans were skeptical, but nothing was ever proven in court. In August 2012, Wendon Group was appointed receiver under New Zealand law. By 2014, fewer than 2% of Bitcoinica's customers had received any compensation at all.

At 12:04 PM on July 12, 2010, a Bitcointalk user named Mionione asked an uncomfortable question: what stops someone from flooding the network with 0.00000001 BTC transactions, bloating every node's storage one satoshi at a time? The thread is still readable at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=287.0
Four minutes later, at 12:08 PM, Gavin Andresen replied by quoting a comment already sitting in Satoshi's code: "To limit dust spam, require a 0.01 fee if any output is less than 0.01." Gavin didn't write the rule. Satoshi had, before anyone asked. At July 2010 prices, 0.01 BTC was worth about a tenth of a cent, but a user named llama saw the real cost instantly: "That pretty much ruins the possibility of using bitcoin for true micropayments." Gavin held the line: "I don't think Bitcoin should try to solve too many very hard problems all at once."
Satoshi himself said nothing that day. His verdict came three weeks later, on August 4, 2010, in the same thread: "Bitcoin isn't currently practical for very small micropayments. Not for things like pay per search or per page view without an aggregating mechanism, not things needing to pay less than 0.01."
Read that phrasing again: "without an aggregating mechanism." Satoshi didn't say micropayments were impossible. He said they needed a layer Bitcoin didn't have yet. Six years later, developers started building exactly that mechanism. We call it the Lightning Network.

July 12, 2013 (13 years ago) — BitInstant Suspends Service
On the evening of July 12, 2013, the biggest Bitcoin on-ramp in the United States went dark. BitInstant, founded in 2011 by Charlie Shrem and Gareth Nelson, let anyone walk into a CVS drugstore or a Western Union location, hand cash to the clerk, and receive Bitcoin. No bank account, no wire transfer, no exchange signup. That design made it the dominant way Americans bought their first coins.
It was also the trap. An anonymous, walk-in cash channel was exactly what an unlicensed reseller supplying Silk Road drug buyers needed, and the same feature could not serve one group without serving the other. By July 2013 the company was buried under roughly 17,300 customer service complaints, facing a fresh class action lawsuit, and holding a warning letter from New York regulators demanding money transmitter compliance.
The shutdown notice framed everything as temporary: the team would "close shop and dedicate the entire team's efforts to creating the next generation of BitInstant." The next generation never shipped. Six months later, on January 26, 2014, Shrem was arrested at JFK airport on federal money laundering charges, while still serving as Vice Chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation.
Prosecutors charged that Shrem knowingly let Robert Faiella, an unlicensed dealer known as "BTCKing," push over $1 million through BitInstant without anti-money-laundering checks, reselling the coins to Silk Road drug buyers, and that Shrem never filed the required suspicious activity reports. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in December 2014 to two years in federal prison. In 2018 the Winklevoss twins, early BitInstant investors, sued him over roughly 5,000 Bitcoin; the case settled in 2019. BitInstant never reopened, and its collapse pushed FinCEN registration across the US exchange industry.

July 12, 2017 — A 22-Year-Old Intern Photobombs the Fed Chair with a "Buy Bitcoin" Sign
He got escorted out of the room within minutes. Seven years later, the sign he scribbled that day sold at auction for over a million dollars.
On July 12, 2017, Janet Yellen, then Chair of the Federal Reserve, was delivering the Fed's semiannual monetary policy testimony to the House Financial Services Committee. Live on television, a young man seated directly behind her held up a handwritten sign: "Buy Bitcoin."
The sign belonged to Christian Langalis, a 22-year-old intern at the Cato Institute. He had drawn it on a yellow legal pad with a fine-point pen. Committee rules explicitly forbid holding up signs during testimony, and staffers escorted him out shortly after.
Langalis said afterward he had no idea it had gone viral. His phone had died before the hearing even started, since he arrived so early to get the seat. He found out only once someone told him, after he had already been walked out of the room.
Bitcoin moved on the moment. CoinDesk reported the price climbed to session highs, trading 3.7 percent higher at $2,418.46 by 2:27 PM Eastern that same afternoon. The image spread everywhere within hours, becoming one of the most recognizable pieces of Bitcoin folklore from the entire bull run era.
Langalis kept the sign in a sock drawer for years. In April 2024, he auctioned it through Scarce City, a bitcoin-only marketplace, at Pubkey Bar in New York. A pseudonymous bidder known as "Squirrekkywrath" won it for 16 BTC, worth roughly 1.03 million dollars.
Yellen never mentioned Bitcoin once during that hearing. The sign behind her became more famous than anything she said.

July 11, 2019 — Trump Calls Bitcoin "Based on Thin Air" the Same Day the Fed Chair Called It Digital Gold
Two of the most quoted official reactions to Bitcoin in its history, hours apart, from two branches of government, same evening.
That afternoon Fed Chair Jerome Powell had told the Senate Banking Committee Bitcoin was "a speculative store of value, like gold." Hours later, Trump logged onto Twitter with a very different verdict, in the middle of a White House social media summit with online allies.
Trump's tweetstorm ran three parts. First: "I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air. Unregulated Crypto Assets can facilitate unlawful behavior, including drug trade." Second, on Facebook's Libra: "If Facebook and other companies want to become a bank, they must seek a new Banking Charter and become subject to all Banking Regulations, just like other Banks." He closed defending the dollar: "We have only one real currency in the USA, and it is stronger than ever."
The market reacted immediately. Bitcoin dropped 7.1% within 45 minutes of the tweets, part of a rout that took the price from above $12,000 toward the $10,000s over the following days. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong reportedly counted it as a win just to have a sitting president tweeting about Bitcoin at all. CoinDesk later labeled this Trump's "Genesis Post," the first time a presidential statement had directly moved Bitcoin's price.
The reversal that followed is now well known. By 2024 Trump had become an outspoken crypto advocate, and in 2025 he announced a Strategic National Bitcoin Reserve, sending the price up 8.2% in a day, the exact opposite reaction to this tweet six years earlier. Powell's gold comparison from that same July afternoon has aged rather better.

July 11, 2010 — A Finnish Student Gets Bitcoin Slashdotted, Crashing the Website Within the Hour
One campaign to get noticed by tech nerds overwhelmed bitcoin.org's hosting in under sixty minutes, then indirectly created Mt. Gox a week later.
Martti Malmi, an early forum regular known as sirius, had spent weeks campaigning for this moment. "Slashdot with its millions of tech-savvy readers would be awesome, perhaps the best imaginable!" he wrote on the forum, pushing others to help make it happen.
On July 11, 2010, it worked. Malmi sat in his dorm room, headphones on, a can of energy drink beside him, watching Slashdot prepare to post. This was the moment he had been chasing since finishing an internship months earlier, purely to get Bitcoin real outside attention.
The bitcoin.org website and forum ran on modest rented hosting, unable to handle more than about one hundred simultaneous visitors. Within an hour of the post going live, the site buckled and went down, alongside a wave of dismissive comments from readers. Malmi scrambled to scale up hosting capacity that same day.
The next morning made the difference clear. Bitcoin software downloads jumped from around 3,000 in June to over 20,000 in July. Gavin Andresen's Bitcoin faucet gave away 5,000 free BTC the day after the post and ran completely empty.
Among the people who found Bitcoin through that Slashdot post was Jed McCaleb, who owned an old, dormant domain from an earlier project trading Magic: The Gathering cards online: mtgox.com. July 10, 2019 — Two Days That Framed How Washington Saw Bitcoin
Over two days of testimony, the most powerful central banker on earth was forced to explain Bitcoin to Congress. What he said about it surprised almost everyone.
The backdrop was not Bitcoin at all. In June 2019, Facebook had unveiled Libra, a proposed global digital currency backed by a consortium of 28 companies. Washington panicked. A company with billions of users launching its own money was a threat regulators took seriously.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell was already scheduled for his semiannual testimony to Congress that week. Libra hijacked the agenda. On July 10, before the House Financial Services Committee, Powell warned Libra "could rise to systemic importance just because of the mere size of Facebook." Bitcoin fell roughly 7% over the three hours he spoke, dragged down purely by association with a project it had nothing to do with.
The next day, July 11, Powell moved to the Senate Banking Committee. Senator Mike Crapo asked him directly what he thought of Bitcoin as a threat to the dollar. Powell's answer became the most quoted thing he ever said about it: "Almost no one uses Bitcoin for payments. They use it more as an alternative to gold. It was a genuinely two-sided statement. "Speculative" was a warning. But "an alternative to gold" was close to an endorsement of the exact thesis Bitcoiners had argued for years.
The irony: Washington summoned regulators to confront a corporate coin, Libra, that never launched and died within two years. In doing so, the Fed Chair gave Bitcoin its most credible official description yet.

Bitcoin's difficulty adjusts roughly every two weeks, targeting an average block time of 10 minutes. More hashing power means blocks get found faster, so difficulty rises to compensate. On July 9, 2011, it rose 31.5%, the largest single jump in Bitcoin's history.
The cause traces back a month. Bitcoin's price had spiked hard after a Gawker article on the Silk Road marketplace brought mainstream attention, peaking near $32 on June 8. Easy money brought a wave of new miners rushing to buy GPUs, breaking the "gentleman's agreement" Satoshi had asked for in 2009 to keep mining CPU-only.
The irony: those GPUs came online in late June and early July, after the price had already cracked. The June 19 Mt. Gox hack sent Bitcoin briefly to a penny before recovering to single digits. Hashrate kept climbing anyway, hardware lagging weeks behind sentiment.
This was not isolated. All of 2010 saw 32 difficulty increases out of 33 adjustments, averaging 22.85 percent. 2013 saw 30 positive adjustments averaging 17.16 percent amid two massive rallies and the shift to ASIC mining. A decade later almost to the month, China's 2021 mining ban triggered drops as steep as 27.9 percent, the mirror image of July 2011.
Fifteen years and several bull markets later, the July 9, 2011 record for a single difficulty increase has never been broken.

July 9, 2014 (12 years ago) — Andreas Antonopoulos Resigns from the Bitcoin Foundation
He called it "the complete lack of transparency." By then three board members had already resigned in disgrace and the organization had less than two years left to live.
The Bitcoin Foundation was founded in September 2012, modeled on the Linux Foundation, with a stated mission to standardize, protect and promote Bitcoin. Its real job was giving the currency a respectable public face after years of association with crime and fraud.
Antonopoulos led the Foundation's anti-poverty committee and had built a reputation as one of Bitcoin's most credible public educators. When he criticized an institution, people listened.
The Foundation gave him plenty to criticize. In January 2014, vice chairman Charlie Shrem was arrested on money laundering charges tied to Silk Road. In February, Mark Karpeles resigned after Mt. Gox, the exchange he ran, collapsed. Then in May 2014 came Brock Pierce, elected to the board despite longstanding public controversy over his past associations, none of which had ever led to charges. His appointment triggered a wave of member resignations.
Antonopoulos had already been pulling away, having quietly stepped down as head of the anti-poverty committee weeks earlier. On July 9, 2014, he made it final, posting on Twitter: "I can no longer have even the smallest association with the Bitcoin Foundation, because of the complete lack of transparency."
By April 2015, the Foundation disclosed that assets had collapsed from over $4.6 million a year earlier to just $12,553.06. Antonopoulos went on to publish Mastering Bitcoin later that same year and became known for coining "not your keys, not your coins."

July 9, 2013 (13 years ago) — Kipochi Launches Bitcoin Wallet with M-Pesa Integration in Kenya
A tiny in-house demo, never meant for the public, leaked to the global press within days. Two weeks later a telecom giant in London quietly ordered it killed.
M-Pesa was already the most successful mobile money system on earth. Roughly 70 percent of Kenya's adult population used it, and it accounted for close to a third of the country's entire GDP.
Pelle Braendgaard, co-founder of a small wallet startup called Kipochi, moved from Nicaragua to Kenya in May 2013 to build the integration himself. Within a month he had a small demo working, limited to a handful of in-house staff, meant only to show Kenya's Central Bank and local telecoms what was technically possible.
It leaked anyway. Global outlets picked up the story instantly, and coverage spiraled into claims that a third of Kenyans already had a Bitcoin wallet, a wide exaggeration of a demo built for a handful of staff.
Within a week or two, Kipochi's connection to M-Pesa through merchant gateway Kopo Kopo was cut off without warning. Braendgaard later learned the order had come not from Kenya but from Vodafone headquarters in London, spooked by the same exaggerated press coverage.
Kenya's Central Bank was the calm party in this story. In August 2013 it quietly told Braendgaard it had no objection to Kipochi continuing, as long as it partnered with a regulated institution. The telecom giant, not the regulator, pulled the plug.
Kipochi struggled on for roughly another year before closing its Kenya operations. Braendgaard eventually founded Notabene, a company that helps crypto businesses comply with financial regulation, the very force that had ended his first Bitcoin venture.

July 8, 2014 — Xapo Raises $20M, Sets Bitcoin's Biggest Funding Record
A Patagonian sheep rancher convinced Silicon Valley to bury bitcoin in a Swiss military bunker.
Wences Casares grew up watching his family's savings wiped out three times by Argentina's currency crises. By 2014 he had built Xapo, a bitcoin custody company that stored customer coins in underground vaults, including a decommissioned Swiss military bunker disconnected from the internet entirely.
Casares earned the nickname "Patient Zero" for personally introducing bitcoin to dozens of Silicon Valley's most powerful investors. At one conference he passed a phone loaded with a quarter million dollars in bitcoin hand to hand, just to prove it could be done.
On July 8, 2014, Xapo announced $20 million from Greylock Partners and Index Ventures, bringing total funding to $40 million, the largest raise any bitcoin company had seen. Max Levchin, Yuri Milner, and Jerry Yang joined too. The round valued Xapo above $100 million.
Reid Hoffman, the man who coined Casares' nickname, joined Xapo's board as an observer that same day. Bitcoin debit cards began shipping to customers within the month.
Xapo's custody business was acquired by Coinbase in 2019. At its peak it held an estimated 7 percent of all bitcoin in existence, once locked behind mountain rock because one rancher's son refused to trust a bank again.

July 7, 2015 — The First Bitcoin Network Flood Attack
Eleven years ago today, an anonymous attacker spent $49,000 flooding Bitcoin with junk transactions to prove that 1MB blocks couldn't survive real demand. It was the summer of the block size war: Bitcoin Core held the 1MB line while the largest Chinese mining pools had jointly proposed 8MB blocks. Someone decided to make the argument empirically.
At least 10 automated wallets pumped out dust transactions, each packing 102 outputs of 0.0001 BTC. Researchers later classified 385,256 transactions from those ten days as spam, roughly 23% of everything Bitcoin processed. The mempool swelled past 80,000 waiting transactions, fees jumped 51%, and confirmation times stretched sevenfold. When F2Pool swept the dust into a single 999.657 KB consolidation transaction, it filled nearly an entire block by itself and took over 20 seconds to verify.
Suspicion fell on Coinwallet.eu, which had advertised a paid stress test weeks earlier. Nobody ever claimed the attack.
Bitcoin Core answered with economics instead of capacity: version 0.11.0 set a minimum relay fee of 1,000 satoshis, raised to 5,000 by October. If every byte of spam costs real money, sustained spam becomes a losing trade. Two years later SegWit activated without a block size increase. The attacker was right about the congestion and lost the argument anyway.

July 6, 2016 (10 years ago) — Buenos Aires vs. Uber: The Bitcoin Debit Card Workaround
In July 2016, Buenos Aires tried to kill Uber by ordering Argentine banks to block all card payments to the app. Domestically-issued Visa and MasterCard stopped working for Uber. Only for Uber.
Uber's response: direct users to foreign prepaid debit cards issued outside Argentina. Entropay, EcoPayz, Payoneer, ZapZap. All processed as foreign transactions, invisible to the domestic block.
Xapo, a Gibraltar-based Bitcoin wallet and debit card service, became the primary Bitcoin-backed option. Argentina's Bitcoin community found that Xapo's card worked for Uber when local cards did not.
The mechanism was indirect: sell BTC for USD, load the dollars onto the Xapo card, pay for the ride via Visa rails. Bitcoin never touched the Uber transaction. But a Bitcoin-backed card issued in Gibraltar was outside the reach of the Argentine banking system.
The workarounds kept coming. Some Buenos Aires drivers accepted cash from passengers and settled with Uber informally. The city had targeted card payments. Everything else kept working.
Headlines called it "Uber accepts Bitcoin." That was wrong. Uber directed users to foreign prepaid cards generally. Xapo was the Bitcoin community's workaround of choice, one that Uber tolerated.
In December 2017, Visa suspended Wave Crest Holdings, the card issuer behind Xapo and most Bitcoin debit cards globally. The workaround was cut off by the same card network that powered it.
The episode showed that Bitcoin could route around censorship in the traditional financial system, not directly but through infrastructure built on top of it. When Buenos Aires blocked Uber, Bitcoin holders had an off-ramp the city couldn't reach.

Six features in one release. Each one mattered.
The JSON-RPC daemon and headless mode made Bitcoin programmable. Before v0.3 it was a desktop app. After, it was a server you could control by code. Every early exchange and payment processor ran on it. Mt. Gox ran on it. BitInstant ran on it. When Bitcoin became infrastructure, this is how.
20% faster hashing and a hashmeter: real-time hashrate display in the client. GPU mining was just emerging in July 2010. Miners had no feedback on how fast their hardware ran. The hashmeter gave them that number.
Transaction filter tabs let you view received and sent separately instead of one long list. People were accumulating enough history that they needed to organize it. The toy was becoming a tool.
German, Dutch, and Italian translations, contributed by community members. Before Slashdot. These people found Bitcoin independently, in continental Europe, and cared enough to translate the whole application.
The Mac build came from Laszlo Hanyecz, who paid 10,000 BTC for pizza six weeks earlier. Bitcoin now ran on Windows, Linux, and Mac. First feature shipped by someone other than Satoshi. Bitcoin's first community-built release.
Martti Malmi and forum regulars organized a submission to Slashdot. On July 11 it hit the front page. Downloads jumped from 3,000 to 20,000+ in a month. Price surged tenfold in five days. Jed McCaleb registered Mt. Gox eleven days after the v0.3 release.
The JSON-RPC daemon outlasted Satoshi, McCaleb, and Mt. Gox itself. A version runs in every Bitcoin node today.

July 5, 2023 — Larry Fink Calls Bitcoin "Digital Gold"
Six years after calling Bitcoin an "index of money laundering," BlackRock's CEO reversed himself on live TV. The reversal came 20 days after BlackRock filed for a spot Bitcoin ETF.
On October 13, 2017, Larry Fink said at an Institute of International Finance event: "Bitcoin just shows you how much demand for money laundering there is in the world. That's all it is." The quote became one of the most-referenced institutional dismissals of Bitcoin on record.
On June 15, 2023, BlackRock filed a spot Bitcoin ETF application with the SEC. No spot Bitcoin ETF had ever been approved in the US. More than a dozen applications had been rejected. BlackRock's SEC approval record going into the filing: 575 wins, 1 loss. The market read this clearly.
Twenty days later, Fink appeared on Fox Business and delivered the reversal: "Bitcoin is an international asset. It's not based on any one currency." "The role of crypto is digitizing gold in many ways."
The SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs on January 11, 2024. BlackRock's IBIT reached $10 billion in assets in seven weeks, the fastest any ETF had ever done it. It hit $70 billion in 341 days, roughly five times faster than gold's GLD ETF reached the same mark.

July 5, 2011 (15 years ago) — Dark Exchange: An Early Attempt at a Decentralized Bitcoin Exchange
In mid-2011, a developer built a fully decentralized Bitcoin exchange. It ran on I2P, kept no user funds, and hit a problem that took years to solve.
By mid-2011, Mt. Gox handled most global Bitcoin trades. The community had been debating whether an exchange could exist without a central point of failure. Dark Exchange was one developer's attempt to ship what had only been discussed.
On July 5, 2011, a developer going by morpheus posted the project to Bitcointalk: bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=26063.0. No central server, trades routed through I2P for privacy, open source on GitHub. "No more worrying about exchange websites going down or locking your account. You now have complete control of your bitcoin." The code actually ran.
What it could not do was settle trustlessly. Someone had to send first. Dark Exchange coordinated the handshake: users clicked "Payment Sent" and "Payment Received," but counterparty risk fell on whoever moved first. The fix had a name: atomic swaps. Tier Nolan would not describe the concept on Bitcointalk until May 2013. Working on-chain implementations came in 2017.
At launch, early users reported few peers and hit a Java cryptography bug within hours. Memory usage was steep. Orders vanished when you closed the app. The project drew ongoing discussion through 2012 but was effectively dormant by 2013.
Bisq launched in 2014 as the first serious Bitcoin DEX. Dark Exchange was a correctly framed problem in working code, two years before the concept that could solve it had a name.

July 5, 2024 — The Law That Forced Germany to Sell 50,000 Bitcoin
The coins came from a piracy site. A legal rule required selling them before they lost 10% of their value. Five months later, Bitcoin crossed $100,000 for the first time.
The stash traced back to Movie2k, a pirate streaming site shut down in 2013. Its operators parked the profits in Bitcoin, and in January 2024 one of them voluntarily handed nearly 50,000 BTC to Saxony police. It was the largest seizure in German history, about $2.2 billion at the time.
Then German law took over. Seized assets at risk of losing 10% or more of their value before trial must be sold in an emergency sale, a Notveraeusserung. Bitcoin's volatility triggered the rule automatically. Saxony was not allowed to hold, and the proceeds would sit in escrow until the case concluded anyway.
From June 19 to July 12, Saxony sold through Bankhaus Scheich and major exchanges. Arkham had labeled the wallet, so the market watched every move live: its trackers logged $220.7 million in outflows on July 5 alone as Bitcoin fell below $55,000 to four-month lows.
A day earlier, Bundestag member Joana Cotar had sent an open letter urging Berlin to stop the "hasty" sale and hold Bitcoin as a strategic reserve. Justin Sun offered to buy the whole stash off-market. Saxony kept selling.
Final tally: 49,858 BTC sold for 2.639 billion euros, an average of 52,944 euros per coin. On December 5, 2024, Bitcoin crossed $100,000 for the first time. By the December peak, the coins Germany sold for $2.9 billion were worth over $5.3 billion.
In March 2025, the United States began keeping forfeited bitcoin in a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve instead of selling, the approach Cotar urged on Berlin. At today's prices the Movie2k coins would be worth about $3.1 billion. The rule behind the sale was written to prevent a 10% loss.

July 5, 2017 — AlphaBay Seized and the Exit Was a Trap
The FBI called AlphaBay roughly 10 times the size of Silk Road: 250,000 drug listings, 100,000 more for stolen IDs and malware, 200,000 users, 40,000 vendors, paid in Bitcoin and Monero. When it fell on July 5, 2017, the takedown itself was not the trap. The trap was where everyone ran next.
AlphaBay's founder was Alexandre Cazes, a 25-year-old Canadian in Bangkok known as Alpha02. His fatal mistake dated to day one: welcome emails to early users came from his personal address, [email protected]. Investigators found it in 2014 message headers.
On July 5, Thai police crashed a car into his front gate, pretending to have botched a three-point turn. When Cazes walked out to check the noise, they moved in. His laptop sat open and unencrypted, logged into AlphaBay's servers, holding a spreadsheet that put his net worth at $23 million.
Users fled to Hansa, the next biggest market. They didn't know Dutch police had secretly seized it on June 20 and were running it undercover. Daily vendors jumped from 1,000 to 8,000 as AlphaBay refugees typed their delivery addresses into a police-run site. In 27 days the Dutch passed 10,000 addresses to Europol.
On July 20, Jeff Sessions announced the AlphaBay seizure and Hansa went dark the same day. Cazes never saw it. He was found dead in Thai custody on July 12, an apparent suicide, a week after his arrest.
Operation Bayonet became the modern takedown playbook: kill the market, control the exit.

July 4, 2015 — BIP66 Activation Causes 6-Block Chainsplit
Of all the Bitcoin upgrades that could have caused a crisis, BIP66 was the least likely candidate. Pieter Wuille's proposal was a cleanup: require strict DER encoding on signatures. No controversy, no competing visions. Just a boring standards fix. 95% of miners had signaled support.
Then it activated on July 4, 2015 — and split the chain.
An unknown miner produced a block violating the new DER rules. Six large pools built on top of it without checking it. They were running SPV mining: processing block headers only, skipping full block validation. The invalid chain grew 6 blocks deep before a forced reorg corrected it.
The revelation wasn't technical. It was about trust. Those six pools had signaled support for a rule they weren't enforcing. The upgrade infrastructure had been running on the honor system. It hadn't held.
The incident fed directly into 2017's SegWit debates. The case for user-activated soft forks was partly an answer to what BIP66 had exposed: miner signaling and miner readiness are not the same thing.

July 3, 2013 (13 years ago) — ESEA Gaming League Caught Mining Bitcoin on Players' PCs
In the spring of 2013, thousands of competitive gamers were unknowingly running a Bitcoin miner on their computers. It was hidden inside the anti-cheat software they had installed to prove they weren't cheating.
ESEA ran leagues for competitive Counter-Strike players. To participate, you installed their client — kernel-level access to your machine, necessary to catch cheaters. That access requires trust. ESEA's players had given it.
Between April 13 and April 30, an ESEA employee secretly embedded Bitcoin mining code into the client. It ran silently for 17 days across thousands of machines. The miner pushed GPUs hard. Users noticed: temperatures spiking, fans screaming, graphics cards failing. Replacement cost: ~$300 each. Total mined: roughly $3,700 worth of Bitcoin.
ESEA fired the employee and called it a lone rogue actor. The community wasn't buying it. On July 3, three gamers filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court. In November 2013, New Jersey regulators added a $1 million fine.
This was one of the first documented cases of Bitcoin being secretly extracted through malware embedded in legitimate software. The mechanics — trusted process, elevated permissions, GPU compute quietly redirected, Bitcoin as frictionless payout — became the template for years of cryptojacking attacks that followed.

July 2, 2014 (12 years ago) — Coinbase Launches Vault: Bitcoin Storage Designed to Slow You Down
Five months after Mt. Gox collapsed and took 850,000 BTC into the void, Coinbase launched a storage tier built around an idea that seemed almost un-Bitcoin: if you want to move your coins, wait two days. The slowness was the product.
Mt. Gox's collapse in February 2014 left customers with nothing. No recourse, no recovery. Every serious Bitcoin holder was asking where to store coins that wouldn't disappear. Coinbase's answer: https://www.coinbase.com/blog/the-coinbase-vault
The security model: 97% of Coinbase's Bitcoin offline in geographically distributed vaults and safe deposit boxes. Withdrawals triggered a 48-hour hold while Coinbase reached out to confirm the request was yours. If your account was hacked, you had 48 hours to cancel.
CEO Brian Armstrong framed it in banking terms: moving toward "professional financial services that high net-worth individuals would expect." Wallet equals checking account, Vault equals savings. Bitcoin was being domesticated into familiar financial categories.
The community noticed the catch. Vault was fully custodial — Coinbase held the keys. "Not your keys, not your coins" was becoming a mantra post-Mt. Gox, and BitGo had already been offering actual multisig for a year. Coinbase was behind.
They fixed it four months later. On October 29, 2014, they launched a multisig Vault in a 2-of-3 setup: user holds one key, Coinbase holds another, a third for recovery. For the first time, Coinbase users could hold their own key.
That architecture became the foundation for Coinbase Custody in 2017. By the time Coinbase listed on NASDAQ in April 2021 at a $65 billion valuation, institutional custody was central to the story. It started with a 48-hour delay.

Manhattan, July 2018. Two of the loudest hard-money critics of the dollar took the stage at a SoHo theater to argue over which asset would outlast it. Peter Schiff backed gold. Erik Voorhees backed code. They agreed on almost nothing else.
The Soho Forum ran Oxford-style debates: audience votes before and after, winner determined by who moved the room. Pre-debate: 40% yes (Bitcoin replaces fiat), 40% no, 20% undecided. A coin flip.
The timing favored Schiff. Bitcoin had fallen from $20,000 in late 2017 to $6,500 by July 2018. He had been predicting this since 2013. The bear market was his argument made flesh.
Schiff's case: money must be a reliable store of value. Bitcoin's swings make it useless for pricing goods. People hoard it hoping to sell higher. "Fool's gold," he called it. And governments, he added, can ban Bitcoin far more easily than gold.
Voorhees had one line that landed: "I remember when it was a big deal when Bitcoin moved 50%. Today it's a big deal when it moves 10%. In a few years it'll be a big deal when it moves 2-3%." He also pressed what Schiff couldn't answer: censorship resistance, borderless transfers, fixed supply.

July 1, 2014 (12 years ago) — Newegg Becomes the First Major Electronics Retailer to Accept Bitcoin
Newegg had been the hardware store of Bitcoin's GPU mining era. On July 1, 2014, the people who built those early rigs could spend the Bitcoin they mined there.
2014 was the year major retailers started moving. Overstock accepted Bitcoin in January. TigerDirect followed in February. Newegg in July made it three of the internet's top tech retailers in six months.
The push came from below. Newegg customers had been requesting Bitcoin payments on the company's Facebook and Twitter for months. For builders and engineers who had watched the GPU mining era from the front row, Bitcoin wasn't a novelty. It was a natural request.
The partner was BitPay, then the largest Bitcoin payment processor in the world, fresh off a $32 million raise and processing payments for 35,000+ merchants globally. Newegg held zero Bitcoin on its books. BitPay converted every payment to dollars in real time.
This was the standard model across the entire 2014 merchant adoption wave. The retailer bore no price exposure. What they got was the checkout button and the headline. The actual Bitcoin stayed within BitPay's infrastructure until it became dollars.
Newegg kept the option running long after the novelty wore off. By 2018 it had expanded Bitcoin payments to 73 more countries. The customer demand that drove the 2014 launch never went away.

July 1, 2015 (11 years ago) — DEA Agent Carl Force Pleads Guilty to Stealing $700K in Bitcoin From His Own Silk Road Investigation
Carl Force IV was a 15-year DEA Special Agent given the lead undercover role in the most high-profile darknet case in US history. His authorized persona was "Nob," a fictional cartel contact Ulbricht grew to trust.
What no one on the task force knew: Force had invented a second persona called "French Maid" and was using it to sell Ulbricht inside intelligence about the government's investigation. Ulbricht paid him roughly $100,000 in Bitcoin for the tips.
When Ulbricht ordered a hit on informant Curtis Green, Force and fellow agent Shaun Bridges staged a fake murder in a Utah hotel suite, sending staged photographs as proof of death. Ulbricht paid $80,000 in Bitcoin. They kept it.
Force was also secretly serving as Chief Compliance Officer at CoinMKT, a Bitcoin exchange, without DEA authorization. When a $337,000 account was flagged, he froze it, siphoned $300,000 into his personal account, and falsified the report to show only $37,000 seized.
His downfall came through Venmo and Bitstamp, which flagged his laundering attempts. He responded with an invalid DEA subpoena sent from his personal email without supervisory approval. The scrutiny that followed led to his arrest.
On July 1, 2015, Force pleaded guilty to extortion, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to 78 months and ordered to pay $340,000 in restitution. His admitted corruption became a centerpiece of Ross Ulbricht's clemency arguments, permanently undermining the government's claim to a clean prosecution.

June 30, 2022 (4 years ago) — Mirror Trading International Fraud
260,000 people in 140 countries sent Bitcoin to a South African trading club promising 10% monthly returns. The bot was fake. The CEO fled to Brazil. Only 4% of the Bitcoin was ever recovered.
Mirror Trading International launched in 2018 pitching a proprietary algorithm that traded forex using members' Bitcoin. No effort required, just send BTC and collect returns. The pitch was 10% a month, every month, with referral bonuses for bringing in new members.
There was no algorithm. CEO Cornelius Steynberg lied about the trading bot's existence from the start. MTI was a Ponzi: new deposits funded earlier investors' returns. Account statements were fabricated. At peak the scheme claimed 260,000 members across 140 countries, collecting 29,421 BTC valued at $1.73 billion at March 2021 prices.
Texas shut down MTI's US operations in July 2020. South Africa's FSCA warned clients to request refunds in August 2020. MTI kept taking deposits for four more months.
It collapsed in December 2020. Steynberg vanished, was found in Brazil in December 2021 on an Interpol warrant. The CFTC filed charges on June 30, 2022, calling it the largest Bitcoin fraud case in agency history. A federal court later ordered Steynberg to pay $3.4 billion in restitution and penalties.
Liquidators recovered 1,281 BTC, about 4% of what was collected. For most of the 260,000 members, the rest is gone.

Bitcoin was at $580 in June 2014, down from $1,100 at year's start. Mt. Gox had collapsed four months earlier. Confidence was at its lowest since 2011. Into this, Bitmain announced a new miner shipping in ten days.
The S3 ran on the BM1382: a 28nm chip, putting Bitcoin mining on the same fabrication node as mainstream consumer electronics. Rated at 478 GH/s, 366W, 0.77 J/GH — about 20% more efficient than the S2, which had shipped three months before. Price: 0.75 BTC, roughly $435 at the time. That same 0.75 BTC held untouched would be worth approximately $47,000 today.
Bitmain shipped four Antminer generations in 2014: S2, S3, S4, S5. Each made the previous obsolete by design. Capture market share, fund the next chip, repeat. For miners, constant hardware spend just to stay in place.
Bitmain was founded by Jihan Wu, a financial analyst who borrowed 100,000 yuan from family to buy 900 BTC at $11 in 2011, and Micree Zhan, a chip designer. Where others saw a speculative asset, they saw a hardware problem.
By 2016, every competitor (CoinTerra, KnCMiner, Spondoolies-Tech) had folded. The next ASIC challenger didn't arrive until late 2017. Most buyers couldn't stay competitive long. For the company collecting their 0.75 BTC, every one of those bets was right.

June 29, 2023 — AirBTC Goes Live
An anonymous founder launched a Bitcoin-only holiday rental platform on June 29, 2023. No press release, no venture capital, no fiat anywhere in the stack. Guests paid in sats via on-chain or Lightning, hosts received sats directly, and the platform held funds in escrow between them. Zero interaction with the legacy banking system at any point.
Their about page on launch day: "Most businesses require some form of interaction with the legacy banking system. Not us. Our business is 100% Bitcoin and we strive to have zero links back to the legacy financial system."
The community was cautious. The founders were anonymous. The listing base was thin. One commenter said it would be "very hard to make it work." He was not wrong about the difficulty, but the platform survived. In 2024 co-founder Jake Seifert joined, rebuilt the execution side, and the platform migrated and rebranded as Hodlstay. Still running three years later.
The hardest part, Seifert later said, was not building the platform. It was "getting Bitcoiners to come off of their Bitcoin." A circular economy needs spenders. Bitcoin culture had been building the opposite.

June 29, 2013 — Mt. Gox Finally Registers with FinCEN
Six weeks after DHS seized $2.9 million from its US accounts, Mt. Gox filed the FinCEN registration it should have had before operating in the US. The exchange was handling 70% of global Bitcoin volume at the time. It had no anti-money-laundering controls, no suspicious activity reporting, no proper record-keeping. The rules had only existed since March 2013, but they were clear, and Mt. Gox had no excuse.
CEO Mark Karpeles filed the paperwork on June 29, 2013. It changed nothing. US banking partners were gone. USD withdrawals were backed up for weeks. Meanwhile Bitcoin was climbing toward $1,000 in its historic 2013 bull run, and Mt. Gox sat at the center of that market while its operations quietly collapsed.
Eight months later, in February 2014, Mt. Gox suspended trading and filed for bankruptcy. 850,000 BTC gone. The FinCEN filing was the clearest public warning sign. Almost nobody read it that way at the time.

June 28, 2013 -- Summer Low During Bitcoin’s Epic 2013
Bitcoin hit $65 on this day, 75% below the $266 peak it had reached just 79 days earlier. It was the deepest point of the 2013 summer correction, and nearly every forum declared Bitcoin dead. They were wrong by a factor of 19.
The spring that created the problem started in Cyprus. In March 2013, the EU threatened to seize Cypriot depositor savings as part of a bank bailout. Money moved into Bitcoin almost overnight. By April 10, Bitcoin was trading at $266 on Mt. Gox -- a 20x run from $13 in January, fueled by the idea that Bitcoin sat outside the reach of any government.
The peak lasted hours. Mt. Gox suspended trading for 12 hours to cool the market. When it reopened, only sellers were waiting. Bitcoin fell from $266 to under $60 in four days. Then the regulatory pressure arrived: on May 15, the Department of Homeland Security seized $2.9 million from Mt. Gox's Dwolla account for operating an unlicensed money transmitter. On June 20, Mt. Gox froze all USD withdrawals. Customers could trade but couldn't get dollars out. The price drifted back toward its April floor.
On June 28, at $65, the obituaries were everywhere. The next day -- June 29 -- Mt. Gox quietly received its FinCEN money services license, unlocked withdrawals, and resumed normal operations. Nobody announced it as the bottom, because nobody knew it was.
In October, China discovered Bitcoin. Baidu began accepting Bitcoin payments. Chinese retail investors poured in. The price went from $130 in October to over $500 by mid-November, then kept climbing. On November 28, 2013, Bitcoin hit $1,242 on Mt. Gox. Anyone who bought the June floor made 19x in five months. The exchange that locked USD withdrawals in June was setting all-time highs in November. Its own collapse was three months away.

June 28, 2019 -- Craig Wright Under Oath
Craig Wright had publicly claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto since 2016, always on his own terms -- blog posts, friendly journalists, staged demonstrations that never produced a verifiable cryptographic signature. On June 28, 2019, for the first time, those claims were made under oath in a federal courtroom in Florida, where perjury applies and opposing lawyers push back.
The case was Kleiman v. Wright. Dave Kleiman was a computer forensics expert and early Bitcoin figure who died in April 2013. His brother Ira sued Wright, claiming Dave and Craig had mined 1.1 million Bitcoin together from 2009 to 2011, and that Wright had stolen Dave's share after his death. At 2019 prices, the claim was worth roughly $10 billion.
On the stand, Wright declared that Satoshi Nakamoto was "a character" he created when writing the whitepaper -- not a pseudonym, a fictional persona. He offered no cryptographic proof. Signing a message with Satoshi's private key, the simplest available verification, remained undone. His explanation for the missing Bitcoin: it was locked in the Tulip Trust, keys to be delivered by a bonded courier in 2020. The judge's response from the bench: "Apparently, dead men tell no tales, but they perhaps send bonded couriers."
Kleiman's lawyers then presented a Deed Wright claimed was from 2012. Forensic analysis showed it contained fonts with 2015 copyright timestamps. When confronted with it, Wright threw a printed copy at opposing counsel across the courtroom.
Cross-examination broke Wright entirely. He cried multiple times on the stand -- while lamenting Bitcoin's use in child pornography and dark markets. After testimony ended, witnesses said he crawled into his lawyer's arms and bawled. The hearing transcript ran to 239 pages. The court found compelling evidence of document forgery and noted that no one else had a motive to falsify them.
The full trial came in 2021. The jury found no partnership existed. Wright did not owe half of 1.1 million Bitcoin. Wright's claim to be Satoshi has never been proven in court or cryptographically. June 28, 2019 was the first day it was tested under oath. It did not hold up well.

June 28, 2015 -- Greek Capital Controls Trigger Bitcoin Demand Surge
On Sunday evening, Greek PM Tsipras announced that banks would not open the next morning. Citizens could withdraw €60 per day from ATMs -- and nothing more. Bitcoin's most visible test as crisis money had arrived.
Greece had been in bailout negotiations with the EU, ECB, and IMF since 2010. By June 2015, talks had collapsed. That Sunday, the ECB cut off Emergency Liquidity Assistance -- the credit line keeping Greek banks solvent. Without it, banks could not open Monday. Tsipras called a referendum for July 5 on the creditors' terms.
The controls were sweeping. Greeks could not wire money abroad, use cards at foreign ATMs, or pay foreign suppliers. The €60/day ATM limit was less than many pensioners' monthly benefit. Wire transfers, international payments -- all locked inside Greek banks indefinitely.
Within hours, exchanges reported surging Greek activity. Bitstamp, BTCGreece, and Bitcoin.de all logged sharp increases in registrations and trading volume. Bitcoin's price climbed above $268, a multi-month high.
The logic was simple. Capital controls are a gate on the euro system -- wire transfers, SWIFT payments, bank-to-bank movement. Bitcoin has no such gate. A transaction confirmed on the Bitcoin network crosses borders the same way it crosses a room. The ledger doesn't care.
But most Greeks didn't have Bitcoin. And buying it required a euro bank transfer, which was now capped. The escape hatch existed, but entering it was partly blocked. What the crisis drove most was registrations and awareness, not mass adoption.
For the first time, major financial press covered Bitcoin as potential crisis infrastructure -- not speculation, not Silk Road. NBC, the Financial Times, Reuters all ran pieces asking whether Bitcoin could hedge against a sovereign banking failure. The framing stuck.
Greece voted No (Oxi) in the July 5 referendum, then accepted an austerity deal anyway. Capital controls weren't fully lifted until 2019. Bitcoin didn't save the Greek economy -- but the episode created Bitcoin's first measurable record as crisis money.

June 27, 2014 (12 years ago) — The US Government's First Bitcoin Auction
On this day twelve years ago, the US Marshals auctioned 29,656 Bitcoin seized from Silk Road. Forty-five bidders submitted 63 bids across 10 lots. When the auction closed twelve hours later, every lot had gone to the same buyer, who refused to identify themselves.
In October 2013, the FBI arrested Ross Ulbricht and shut down Silk Road, which had processed over $1 billion in Bitcoin drug sales. The government seized more than 170,000 BTC — the largest Bitcoin haul in history at the time — with no playbook for what to do with it. The US Marshals structured a sealed-bid auction for a first tranche of 29,656 BTC.
Nine days before bidding opened, they sent registration confirmations with all bidder email addresses in the CC field instead of BCC. Over 155 registered bidders had their identities exposed to each other in one email.
Bidding opened at 8 AM ET. Sealed bids, 12 hours, approximately $19 million in total value at the day's price. When the Marshals tallied the results, a single bidder had won all 10 blocks — every lot, the entire 29,656 BTC — and declined to be named.
For five days, the Bitcoin community speculated. On July 2, Tim Draper confirmed it was him. Draper had already written the first VC check into a Bitcoin startup, $500,000 into CoinLab in 2012. He partnered with Vaurum to deploy the coins as liquidity in developing economies where weak local currencies cut people off from sound money. His words: "Bitcoin frees people from trying to operate with weak currencies."
The Marshals ran two more auctions through 2015, liquidating over 100,000 additional BTC. Each one was a government acknowledgment that Bitcoin was real property worth seizing, cataloguing, and auctioning. No conference panel had done as much for Bitcoin's legitimacy as three government auctions did.

June 26, 2024 — DEA's Biggest Bitcoin Seizure Ever Heads to Coinbase
On this day two years ago, the US government sent 3,940 Bitcoin — about $240 million — to Coinbase Prime for liquidation. The Bitcoin had been seized from a dark web drug vendor who signed his listings: "I'm still dancing."
The vendor's name was Banmeet Singh. Operating from Haldwani, India under the handle "Liston," he ran one of the most durable dark web drug operations ever documented. Between 2012 and 2017, he sold fentanyl, LSD, ecstasy, Xanax, ketamine, and tramadol across four consecutive markets: Silk Road 1, Silk Road 2, AlphaBay, and Hansa. Hundreds of kilograms, shipped to all 50 US states.
Singh's operation wasn't just an overseas-to-buyer pipeline. He built eight US distribution cells — in Ohio, Florida, New York, North Carolina, Maryland, North Dakota, and Washington — that received bulk international shipments, repacked them, and reshipped to individual buyers. The network also reached Canada, England, Ireland, Jamaica, and Scotland.
What set Singh apart was survival. The FBI seized Silk Road in October 2013. He moved to Silk Road 2. That was shut down in November 2014. He moved to AlphaBay and Hansa. In July 2017, Operation Bayonet took both down simultaneously in a coordinated international action. AlphaBay's founder was arrested in Thailand and died in custody days later. Singh had been on both platforms. He lost everything in a single week — and was still indicted the following year. Five years. Four markets. One vendor.
He was arrested in London in April 2019. Singh fought extradition for four years. By the time he arrived in the US in March 2023, the Bitcoin he'd earned had appreciated enormously from what it was worth when he earned it. He pleaded guilty in January 2024 and was sentenced to 60 months.
The DEA called the $150M forfeiture their largest drug-related Bitcoin seizure ever. The day after a federal judge approved liquidation, 3,940 BTC moved to Coinbase Prime. Arkham Intelligence spotted the transfer on-chain within minutes of it happening.
After the sale, the US government still held an estimated 213,546 Bitcoin — roughly $13 billion. Four markets. Three continents. One public blockchain. The ledger hid nothing.
