Nope. Just been busy as hell. I had the usual christmas stuff, then a bunch of guests staying. They just left so I'm hoping to get back to work.

Shroomy christmas!
I'll be away for the next few days but I hope to be back before new year's eve. Hope everyone has a lovely holiday and lots of good food, presents and drinks!
Here's a set of end-papers I made for my notebooks. The plan is to print them in navy, lilac and gold with acrylics.

That's exactly the plan!
Handmade notebooks/sketchpads. Your choice of animal on the cover. Your choice of paper:
- 100 pages recycled lined
- 100 pages recycled gridded
- 100 pages recycled dotted
- 100 pages plain cartridge paper
I'm hoping to sell them for €35 each or €25 at sale price.

GM my shroomy bros and brosettes.
Smol update. Fabric got darkened a bit to match the stuff I ordered. The binding chord is now white (again to match what I have IRL). I made some borders for Mr. Fox, brightened him up a bit and moved his ogham out to the sides. I also moved the logo from bottom right to the center, I think it looks better there although I might move it down a bit.
Next tasks are going to be to finalise his layout, make some printing plates and get to work on the end-papers.

Will do!
The logo and the animal are going to be block printed using sumi ink, raw pigments and rice paste. Then I'll emboss them.
The cover will be made from thick card covered with canvas, with the design visible through a window. I'll block print the border onto the canvas probably either with rubber based opaque ink or possibly do an ink stencil (I'll have to experiment).
There's also going to be printed end-papers on the inside, but I haven't decided how to do those yet. Possibly screen printing. It'll most likely be a very simple design.
I'm hoping to sell them for €35 each RRP, and €25 whenever there's a sale. The interior will be 100 pages of either lined, gridded, dotted or cartridge paper made up to order. First page will have a book plate. I considered printing the lines myself but it's too much work for too little reward, so I'm going to farm that job out to a print shop.

I was honestly a bit worried about the project yesterday but I'm feeling optimistic again.
Plan is to make up a test batch and another 8 designs by early january, then assuming all goes well I'll do a full production run aiming to be done for early february. Then launch the store and do a bit of advertising for valentines day.

I did a bunch of work on Mr. Fox and I think he's looking decent now. From here on out it'll probably just be tweaking.
Also I'm back to playing with layouts for the covers...

Did a bit more work on fantastic Mr. Fox. Updated the layout and did a trial colour separation. Doesn't quite looks as nice as I'd like. I have another idea for it I'll try later though.

Bit of a WIP. One on the left was a first attempt. It was interesting but in the end I decided it wasn't quite right. One on the right is a second attempt.
It needs more work before it's ready for printing but I think it has more potential.

Ok! Calling that done. I'm tempted to go back in and add more depth to the shadows but I really should be getting back to actual work.
Typography sucks and her expression is wrong but that's life. I really like how the background and border turned out.

WIP3
I'm mostly calling this done.
It has a few issues, she looks more sadistic than charismatic, the contrast isn't quite where I'd like it to be and the lettering is meh. I might come back to it tomorrow to deepen the shadows a bit but I might be overthinking it. I'll sleep on it and see how it looks in the morning.
Either way I'll scan it and submit on monday.

I think the biggest issue I can see with them is depth, they look very washed out. It's difficult to really saturate colours with pencils. Inks would definitely help with that.
Are the character designs from some show or other?

2024-11-30 21:48:46 GMT

If you have a specific colour in mind it might be difficult to achieve it with mass produced markers.
If you wanted to go down that path you could consider mixing your own inks and using waterbrushes. They're basically like empty markers you fill with your own inks.
Edit: Just realised, that might've been what you meant.

Have you heard of watercolour pencils? They're like oil colouring pencils but made with water soluable binders instead. The idea is that you work with them dry then brush over them with water to blend them.

Four mockup layouts for my notebook project. The final version will be a canvas covered card with a "window(s)" punched in it and the print on heavy cartridge paper underneath.
If I go with one of the versions with three windows there'll be three different prints, not the same one repeated three times.
The final print probably won't look like the render, it's just in there for representative purposes.
There will also likely be a border printed around the window(s).

Hope everyone's having a nice thanksgiving.
Did a bit of work on a logo this evening. The script is an old fashioned Irish one that used to be on our coins. The insular long-S wasn't present in the script so I had to make it up. I like how the curve matches the C. Kerning is a bit off, but it was the best I could do.
