Dammit.
I’m flying from New Orleans to Dallas this morning, and I just ran into LL Cool J at security. I was momentarily starstruck and all I could think to say was “wow! I love your work!”

@nprofile…wdrc I think you’ll be safe just gently handwashing. The only thing I would be concerned about is the paint - if it’s that old, it might peel a bit. One thing you might try is reinforcing the design before washing - heat set by placing a towel over it and iron on a low heat setting.

@nprofile…hefl Last week I had to build an IPSec tunnel between an AWS CWAN account and a Redis instance in GCP - it involves about a dozen network components, so many possible failure points, and ChatGPT helped me confirm why it wasn’t working when my coworkers with way more networking experience were throwing up their hands. 😂

I can see that - as an SRE I’m not writing complex code most of the time, so I don’t generally need help debugging, but it can be great for identifying problems with, say, k8s manifests or helm charts.

As an example, I work with AWS resources a lot, but their documentation is bloated and often contradictory - chat can help me find what I need and distill it into readable steps.
What’s key is *asking for citations* and then *checking those sources*. One of my favorite pastimes right now is scolding the bot when it gives me nonsense - it’s gratifying when it apologizes and corrects itself. 😄

2025-07-04 16:22:00 GMT

I’ve been in the AI skeptic camp for a while - less so about LLM use in applications, definitely more when it comes to casual chatbot use. I’m not vibe coding, I’m not getting ChatGPT to write my blog posts.
But lately I have been using it more often as both a search and learning tool with a lot of success. It’s just so much faster than using a search engine and combing through pages of inaccurate results.

The reply I had queued up: “You all are a disgrace. No souls, no morals. The racial profiling is happening, along with warrantless arrests, pulling guns on citizens, slamming U.S. Senators to the ground. Today a mayoral candidate in NYC was arrested because he asked ICE agents to produce a warrant. Your agents are snatching up anyone they please, with no due process. And you’re lying to the American people about it. You are a modern gestapo, wiping your asses with the constitution every day.”

One of their recent posts is calling out the LA Times for an article about racial profiling. They’re saying the claim of racial profiling is “disgusting” and an insult to their “brave agents”. But anyone who’s seen footage from the raids in L.A. knows that’s a joke.
I started typing a reply to that specific post … but then I realized that I’d probably be putting myself at risk if I hit “Submit”. And that’s why I feel so sick to my stomach now.

2025-06-18 00:02:09 GMT

My stomach hurts. Some of the most disgusting ICE propaganda is happening on LinkedIn of all places. I went looking to see if they have a presence there, I guess to see if anyone is objecting or protesting there. Their feed is full of “ooh look at this scary brown person we just hauled in!” … and people are lapping it up. Well, not a lot of people, to be fair. And LinkedIn doesn’t give you a “downvote” option so. 🤷‍♀️

Today's going to be a hell of a day.
I'm speaking at a conference on Wednesday. It's an enterprise-run conference, so we actually have a _rehearsal_ on Tuesday (unheard of, right?). I still have to get my notes together for a video interview happening tomorrow afternoon. I'm supposed to be spending the night in Culver City on Tuesday, but I still haven't gotten my hotel confirmation, so that's one more thing to follow up on.
And when I get back home on Thursday, I have a day to pack fins, tails, swim gear, etc., and then I'm off to my first mermaid convention on Friday (driving from Pasadena to Sacramento). And let me tell you, compared to literally any open source conference I've ever been to, this convention is not a well-oiled machine. As of this morning, I'm still getting emailed information that should have been published months ago that, had I known, would have made a big difference in my travel choices and the tickets I bought. It's going to be chaos. Wet, tail-flipping, chlorine-smelling chaos. And I'll be missing all my #PyCon friends.
But today I have to get as far ahead on work as I can and I'm already getting support requests I don't have time for. So what am I doing here? Just kvetching because it releases stress. 😂

2025-05-12 15:41:44 GMT

I'm going to be on a panel at a conference next week, and one of the proposed questions is this:
"AI in one word - what's it done for your team?"
But what it's done is make more work for us as non-developers bring us code that they "got ChatGPT to write" and then they need us to figure out why it fails.
How do I express that in one word?

2025-05-03 16:45:42 GMT

Southern California #PyLadies and #Python folks, I need your help!
I'm in the planning stages of forming a PyLadies chapter based in the San Gabriel Valley (that's Pasadena, Monrovia, Arcadia, but could also include Glendale and Burbank, and many more communities on the east side of Los Angeles).
Before I submit requests and get the ball rolling, I'd like to find a third person who's interested in signing on as an organizer. Initially there won't be much responsibility beyond getting the word out and helping to decide what our first events will be. It's a great opportunity for someone looking for leadership experience in a volunteer setting.
If you're interested, feel free to reach out to me here, or at my email address on mechanicalgirl.com, or even on the PyLadies or SoCal Python Slack spaces.

Oh I don't need you for this, Hulu. I can just look out my window.

I like this place. I’m no longer drowning in a firehose of content, no longer forced to deal with literal Nazis. But I’m still getting a rich and varied experience, lots of interesting voices. Mastodon feels more like the murmur of activity in a room at a really good party, minus the DJ.

@nprofile…fhu4 I can’t swim without at least *something* - usually it’s just ambient music, distracting myself with podcasts is pretty rare.

@nprofile…fhu4 Oh! Yes, I forgot that there are other models that use Bluetooth. :D I have the regular OpenSwim, not the Pro, so no Bluetooth - I do just load mp3s onto the device directly.

@nprofile…fhu4 Yeah - what else would you play on them? :D Have I been missing out on something?

Btw, if you're curious about the logistics of listening to podcasts while I swim: I use Shokz OpenSwim bone conducting headphones. I download podcasts via the Apple client (if you're on a MacBook, you can find the mp3 files at `~/Library/Group Containers/243LU875E5.groups.com.apple.podcasts/Library/Cache` and just drag them onto the device)

Listened to the March 21 episode of the @nprofile…sh70 podcast during my morning swim - @nprofile…0ta0 is on, talking about the upcoming release of the 3rd Edition of "Automate the Boring Stuff". It's a great listen, and now I'm pretty excited to get my hands on the book. :) (Right now you can order at nostarch.com with a PREORDER coupon code.) #python

We were in Pasadena today, first at the #TeslaTakedown on one end of Colorado, then we marched down to the #HandsOff protest near city hall. The turnout was huge, bigger even than I expected considering that there were other events across the L.A. area.
(The last two pictures are of Andrew’s beautifully crafted sign.)

Friends, if you are in the US, please please join a protest this Saturday, April 5. There will be one near you, wherever you are.
Check out indivisible.org, mobilize.us, the 50501 subreddit - are all great sources for finding local actions.

I’ve had my Google account since at least 2009.
It’s been a month-long project to archive, move to new services, change email subscriptions, move my web site, etc. but I’m finally done.
I’ll be deleting the account over the weekend, just going to wait a few more days for the last straggler emails to come in.

So I’m at a big family gathering today, and the partner of my partner’s cousin (keeping up?) mentions that they’re trying to teach themselves #python and has asked me about learning resources. Teaching kids #python is something I know about, but what are the best resources these days for an adult, non-programmer beginner?

#protip for next year’s #PyConUS - take an extra PTO day for the day after you get back - you will probably be too tired to jump right back into work (ask me how I know)

as someone who cares deeply about docs, I am so excited about this project from @npub1ksl…u762 #PyConUS
