If you've been following the story of Kara, my incarcerated trans friend who has is being held in Texas and has been behind bars for almost three years now, this is the latest need:
Everything she has left in the world is in about 7 bins like these. (It's actually maybe 5 bins like these plus two cardboard boxes and one or two small plastic shoeboxes, but you get the idea. Imagine 7 Home Depot style storage bins)
These have been in a very generous person's basement for over a year, but that person and their family are moving far away. So there's a need to re-home Kara's bins and keep them safe until her release.
Please Note: We're not looking for a handout. There's budget for this.
We need a NYC local who can help (a) secure us new a storage spot, then (b) physically move the bins to that new spot, then (c) guarantee the bins' safety until Kara's release (which could be another year but which we of course hope comes much sooner)
Again, there is reasonable budget that can be made available for a Lyft XL or a rental car (the bins are currently in Brooklyn) and for the costs of a storage unit or for funds to be paid directly to someone who will host these bins in their own possession.

My friend Kara, the one currently incarcerated at Carswell, has had her hormones cut yet again.
They haven't done labs or anything on her in weeks.
They've now reduced her to 3 mg a week for her HRT.

Sigh.
In the latest saga of "tech upgrades that break unexpected things" we seem to have many reports of the latest version of Android that was pushed to many devices, including my Pixels, now having issues with sending DTMF tones down the line during calls.
"Press 2 to speak to the front desk"
"Press 9 to search for your package"
And, in my case, "This is a call from a Federal Prison. To accept this call, press 5"
^ all of these no longer seem to work, or work very inconsistently. I'm wondering if this latest version of Android is cutting off (or otherwise nerfing) just how long / how loud the DTMF tones get sent down the line.
I suspect this is the case because if I go on speaker phone and use a site like https://onlinetonegenerator.com/dtmf.html to blast tones out of my laptop speakers, all of these systems (including TruLinks/CorrLinks) work just fine.
And yes I have tested using a DTMF Tone Generator app on my phone itself. It doesn't work. Likely something about the Dialer app muting local phone sounds and not passing them along down the line.
Arg.
Anyone else out there facing this?

They run amazing online classes and they're working hard to break ASL out of the cage of a lot of unnecessarily gendered legacy signs.

While none of us ever want to see something like this happen, and it takes a certain kind of someone to cause this ruckus, it also takes a certain kind of someone to own up to it.
I wonder if there is some sort of penance possible if this person were to do a full disclosure and work with the manufacturer but take no reward in the process.
Heck, If it were me, I would pay for DEFCON admission at full price even if I were accepted as a speaker on this topic in future. (Maybe even a nice EFF donation as an act of contrition?) 😉👍

Please do not mistake what I'm saying, anybody.
These art insulations are second to none. The level of attention to detail is beyond anything I have words for.
However, the idea that there is some sort of "puzzle" or "experience" you're supposed to interact with....... It might as well be a ShmooCon cryptography puzzle. Ain't nobody playing.
Utterly no one has ever participated in the installation and gotten even 1/10 of the way through it without aggressively posting on Reddit, re-visiting a dozen times, and sharing notes with 50+ people.
Absolutely awful conveyance.
No proper game designers would seem to have been consulted in the construction of this installation. 🤪

Ok, internet, I've looked and looked and for the life of me I can't find something that seems like it should be easy to implement and would sell well: study guide / brain trainer software that would allow you to easily make self-quizzing tools.
Anyone can hand-make flash cards, but it'd be nice not to waste paper. But much more than that I would hope such software starts learning success rates, so that it starts offering you more and more of the questions that haven't been answered as successfully/quickly.
Also, the ability to incorporate images as well as merely text would be marvelous.
Bonus: being able to populate all of this on a computer and not pecking away at a teeny smartphone screen keyboard would definitely be desirable.

I'm still on my kick of playing with tracker technology for luggage and more, and a question as arisen: I often get messages about "unknown Air Tag traveling with you" because all of the ones I'm using belong to Tarah or Emily or someone else other than me.
Let's say you *do* get a message like that, what steps would you take to locate such an Air Tag? With a suitcase it's pretty straightforward, but what about a motorcycle or a car? You can't reasonably tear the entire thing apart.
I would think that the Apple's ultrawideband technology would be used in getting that pinpoint localization of the tag, but is that available to people other than the tag's current owner or authorized parties? Can a "stranger" ping a nearby Air Tag and fix its position discretely with their own iPhone?
If they can't what's the alternative? An SDR with a very specific directional antenna?

While many companies in the industry do this now, the first and for a long time the only manufacturer to offer this feature was Otis Elevators.

in an uncertain future where i guess everything's just a grift and a scam now, has anyone thought of just buying a ton of regular, pasteurized milk and selling it at a markup to trad family dimwits by claiming that it's raw milk?
are the people who are dumb enough to want to buy it also dumb enough to not know the difference?
many of you are looking for new angles and ways to survive in an uncertain tomorrow. perhaps this is a business plan.

... is there a segment of the population that didn't want to vote for a woman or a person of color? Yeah, sure, maybe.
But that segment pales in comparison to the slice of our populace who couldn't bring themselves to vote for EITHER genocidal authoritarian aristocrat because they "saw no difference" between the candidates.
Do I see a difference between them? Of course.
But I also saw this coming. Democrats who try to be Republicans will be beaten by Republicans every time. The DNC is like Charlie Brown with the football, I swear.

So I've learned that RedBox has gone bankrupt and is shutting down. Apparently property owners are getting quotes as high as $1000 from companies who will contract to haul the machines away. I know several hackers interested in them, however, and would be willing to take one or two for free. If you are in central Florida and have a RedBox machine you no longer want on your property, you can reach out to me and I'll put you in touch with someone who will take care of it for you and re-home it.

May I inquire, and I'm not trying to be too snarky here, what the purpose of such a warning would be?
Is there someone out there who genuinely believes that the public is unaware that alcohol has health implications?

I've been getting a lot more of these ads lately (on Instagram, the only place left in my life where I cannot remove ads, sadly) and am curious if this is like a new dangerous scam where vendors are selling denatured lab alcohol as if it were safe to consume?
Or is this some business playing right in the margins of regulation, but actually delivering legit booze?
