It's a semi-autobiography of her childhood in Nebraska during the 1880s and published in 1918. A Russian immigrant on his deathbed recounted his deepest regret at what occurred when he was a driver for an inebriated wedding party after the wedding in Ukraine (part of Russia then, of course.) It was at night, snow everywhere, and he and other drivers of 6 horse-drawn "sledges" (sleighs or sleds) carried 5-6 people. They were beset by at least 30 wolves which they could see from the moonlight on the snow. Each sledge with the horses and wedding guests were ravenously attacked and he heard the piteous screams of people and horses alike. Each sledge was overcome and the remaining sledge driver (the man on his deathbed) in the front, carrying only the bride & groom, told the groom to throw his new bride over the side to divert the wolves and lessen the load so the horses could go faster. The groom refused, so the driver threw them both over the side. He reached the village and survived. He was a pariah after that, left Russia, and went to America. What an author! Willa Cather described it like I was right there. I bet I have nightmares tonight.
