#Question: A friend is looking for a #tablet. Must be able to run #Linux, i.e. #Debian 13 #trixie. It seems, they doesn't care much about price or performance. Must be available in the #EU with #warranty, i.e. no private import nor second hand. Any recommendations? #TIA!

Don't rely on RCS!
Unfortunately, #RCS is worse than #SMS. (It used to be worse than #CVS, but that was something completely different.)
#FreeSoftware operating systems can easily support SMS and even #MMS, e.g. with #ModemManager. RCS is completely locked into #BigTech #duopoly Google + Apple and cannot be supported by #Mobian or free Android flavours.
Use #RFC6120 instead. Open, free, #standardised, federated #InstantMessaging for all!

Yes, that's the workaround: Set the UI to one language, post in this language, set UI to other language, post in that language. Slightly cumbersome for people who post in multiple languages.

2026-05-14 11:20:44 GMT

In #Friendica we cannot set the language for a post? Strange, because otherwise it looks far more featureful than e.g. #Mastodon 😞
In general, I like Mastodon better than Friendica, because I'm used to it. I disliked Mastodon 10+ years ago, because I was used to #Diaspora 😉
In my favourite #socialApp, #Movim by @nprofile…gjrp, I'm also missing language features, i.e. set language(s) per post and filtering my #timelime by language 🤷

I absolutely agree, that "a cross-platform mass-user focused app with a consistent UX across the platforms" is missing desperately in the #Jabber/#XMPP ecosystem.
There are really good clients for Jabber, but none of them fits above description.
AFAIK, both #Snikket/#Borogove by @nprofile…70hd and #Fluux by @nprofile…8kn8 try to close that gap.
Still, I prefer the approach of Delta building on #Rust and #Tauri, instead of #Haxe or #Typescript. #YKINMKBYKIOK.

XEP-0512: XMPP as Interpretive Dance

I do, however, feel the need for a #protocol #bridge, as the #XEP relies on 4/4, while tango is, as everybody knows, 2/4 (el famoso "dos por cuatro"). Time for #slidge "slango" or "tangidge" maybe?

@nprofile…rtl5
HTTP upload is not client to client, but when *you* have your own server and send me an image, you could know *my* client IP by checking the server logs. If I don't use TOR.
In #Gajim, you can configure:
File Preview
Preview in Public Group Chats
Preview all Image URLs
Btw. @gajim, it would be cool to have a "preview images" setting per MUC. Let's say, I'm in one a cats MUC and in a cooking MUC. I don't want to miss any kitten, but seeing all the food porn is too much.

There is an issue that has driven me nuts for a long time: How to use foo with bar, but under baz instead of the usual quuz. Yes, tricky, but now I found that #tutorial!
However, instead of just having a simple web page with the text (20 kB), there is a long-winded YT #video (10 MB), in which someone just reads the text.
500 times the #carbon footprint, no way to copy text, and much harder to understand. But better to monetarize. Only a #podcast would be worse.

It's a drawback of HTTP upload, that there is (AFAIK) no proxy support, so it always will expose the client IP address. Worse with auto-download, of course.

Many people ask, why #Jabber a.k.a. #XMPP is technically successul (used by Whatsapp, Zoom, Grindr, Fortnite, Google FCM, and many more), but is still not *the* federated instant messaging for the people.
Now, it's not about missing features, technical shortcomings, or bad UX. No, the reason simply is: Jabber does not have a cute #mascot!

Isn't that the point of #PFS? Messages are encrypted for this or that device, and if you try to read them with a new device, you can't.
What's probably missing is a standard (#XEP) for synchronizing old messages from one device to another.

Maybe it were a good idea, to have a federated chat system, so that a server outage would not affect all users? Depending on a service run by best buddy of DJT might be problematic in times of protests against DJT.
When you are it, maybe you can also drop the phone number requirement and have a nice first class Linux client, for those of use who refuse to run Android or iOS.

#XMPP is an open protocol standard with various independent implementations in many programming languages for most operating systems. Almost not two #Jabber clients use the same library.
Delta Chat, OTOH, is a single vendor software framework based on various open standards. My guess: Independent implementations are possible, but maybe not encouraged, because they would sooner or later diverge too much from the original?

TTBOMK, #OX has more implementations than #ATM. At least #Gajim, #Libervia, #Profanity, and #xmppc do support 🐂, while (AFAIK) only #Kaidan implements 🏧.

Nice!
But it appears pretty complex to me. Going straight #OX sounds so much simpler to me 🙂 People would only have to announce new keys every some years.
Btw., neither #ATM nor #crossSigning solves problems like this one, reported by @nprofile…9qnt:

Is there a #XEP specifying #crossSigning? I'm only aware of "XEP-0450: Automatic Trust Management (#ATM)".
Btw. the third option would be #OX instead of #OMEMO. One key per account, not per device. No problems with reading messages from #MAM with a new device. Dreaming is free.

Sorry, if I misintpret your post, trying to understand Italian based on my mediocre Spanish 🙂
#XMPP itself does not define #e2ee, but almost all clients do support #OMEMO encryption, which is more or less copied from Signal.
In addition, you can choose a trustworthy provider, such a #cooperative or club.
Maybe for that reasons, German #police seems to believe (wrongly), that #Jabber (the traditional name of XMPP) were "the first pillar of #cybercrime"!

The situation of #Jabber on #MSWindows is dissatisfactory. Some people do understandably prefer a proper application over the web browser. Then there are two half-baked options:
#Dino by @nprofile…f4mz: Unofficial, outdated build. No message reactions, no message replies, no audio widget for voice messages, AFAIK no MUC-MAM and no tray icon.
#Gajim by @nprofile…srwa: Official build, even in the MS store, only slightly outdated, but no A/V calls, AFAIK no tray icon.

What the hell is wrong with #Jabber? The two most important console clients, #Poezio and #Profanity, both released version 0.15.0 today. Same version number, same day, same first letter "P". Do you want to confuse us all?
At least Poezio is written in #Python, Profanity in #C/#Clang, i.e. there are some differences. Otherwise it would be too much.

And there is more to it:
1. Not only it is centralized, but not everyone feels comfortable with Amazon AWS, i.e. putting more money into the pockets of Jeff B.
2. They only care about Google Android and Apple iOS. Their Linux app does not even work without an Android device. Bad luck for Linux users.
3. There is no option to have an account without linked phone number. And using a burner phone number, users can lose their account.

As an #EU citizen, I'ld not rely one second on @nprofile…2wc8. If DJT wants it, Jeff B. will shutdown the service. And it wouldn't help, if they move from Amazon US to Amazon EU.
For our #digitalSovereignty better use proven internet standards for #federation, such as #Jabber/#XMPP. Or Matrix, Briar, Deltachat, whatever floats your boat. But not any silos or walled gardens.

Unfortunately, many #freeSoftware events do not yet have a decent #photoPolicy ("ask for consent first", "no means no", etc.). Which should not be necessary in the first place, because it is just common sense.
But at recent #FOSDEM many people made photos all the time, of everyone. The photos probably end up in Facebook or Instagram for #AItraining 🤷

Security can mean different things. Very often it means confidentiality, integrity and availability. Signal is probably very good at first two, but might fail on the third, if Jeff B or DJT decide to shutdown. It is hard to shutdown federated systems. Or to seize it.
Federated systems help to guarantee our #digitalSovereignty and our #freedom. A centralised US service run in the Amazon cloud is not helpful towards those goals.
