i have an old FLIR One Pro with lightning connector (for old iphone). i thought this was probably a USB device and got a apple lightning to usb-c adapter. of course the thing is not recognized on a (linux) computer's USB hub. anyone know what special nonsense they put in the cable to make this not work / is there a workaround?

the fundamental idea of LosslessCut (video editor) is kind of the only video editing idea that makes sense to me in 2025: no encoding/rendering/proxying etc. just copy stuff out of the files. it's only missing a more "normal" UI and the ability to add more clips to the timeline (instead of pre-merging all video files). otherwise, the workflow is infinitely faster than with classical video editors and the only one that makes sense on low-power systems

oh, got another green tinted PCB photo from JLC for MNT Reform Next's right-hand port board (to confirm parts placement). this one has a lot of superspeed USB going on, including a TI hub and a reclocker/redriver. plus a less exciting HDMI port. here i'll solder in a chip and 2 mid-mount connectors myself to save time.

in terms of "finding things in large texts", for example "find a page in this pdf that mentions both shutdown mode and reg18", are there interesting alternatives to all that llm stuff beyond regex search? are there natural language processing systems that are precise/reliable and understandable? i imagine something like a fuzzy parser with stemming and some sort of ontologies, synonyms and logical inference

ok a big TIL/surprise moment: because of vulkan, i can let applications render using an external AMD GPU on a desktop that's driven by the RK3588's display pipeline... it's like mixing GPUs. and using zink, opengl apps can be wrapped into vulkan transparently. which means i can run Blender on the MNT Reform's internal display with the eGPU connected. i can also drag windows between internal and external displays on the GPU

ok looks like things have progressed in ARM64 land regarding Steam support... i just built box64 with box32 support (still experimental, but seems to work?) from git on my MNT Reform Next and used the included install_steam.sh script and so far it just works. 6 months ago or so this was quite the headache and i often only had a spinner instead of the steam library

thinking further, these tariffs are understandable as retribution for our import VAT but there is a big difference in that _companies_ in the EU don't have to pay this VAT (they get it refunded). but US companies importing i.e. german parts will also have to pay the tariffs, right? so it will put US companies at a disadvantage in terms of importing global parts, which seems like a design error

did i get this right? today i really realized that there is really no VAT (value added tax) in the US (because there is a sales tax system?) and so if you imported products from EU countries (example) you don't have to pay any import VAT. this only leaves the special excise tax (gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol?) and tariffs. as a german citizen i always have to pay 19% import VAT to my govt when i import something from the US, so it's mind boggling that this was not an issue for USians so far

trying to approximate the original look of the renderings in the classic mnt reform manual (done by @nprofile…vtpq in maxon cinema 4d back then) in blender with workbench renderer + freestyle + some compositor tweaks. it is different in some details (there's no ambient occlusion and some lines are interpreted differently, for example), but good enough to update some graphics and to have a workflow for later manuals. will also have to hand erase a few glitches (check the usb-c connector feet)

what's the currently best self-hosted web-based tool for editing and saving a bunch of SQL queries and getting up-to-date tables and graphs from your data, shared with team? metabase, superset, something else? esp. direct sqlite support would be nice
