the options for inviting someone to a chatroom are either by matrix ID (if they already have one), or by email (where they will get an email invite that should resolve to a matrix invite once they sign up, although it's quite fragile), or by linking the room via matrix.to - e.g. "come to matrix.to/#/#matrix:matrix.org". matrix.to should work pretty well; what problems did you see? is this to an invite-only room or a public chatroom?

yup, Matrix is an open standard, despite not being from IETF. Just as XSF is a SDO, so is The Matrix.org Foundation: you can read the open standards process at https://spec.matrix.org/proposals/ and see the wide range of MSCs from many different independent implementors and developers. Gentle reminder that the enemy is centralised surveillance capitalism, not other open source projects… :/

not trying to dismiss feedback, but we’re not aware of any problems caused by matrix.org running something incompatible with other clients or servers. what are you actually thinking of? unable to decrypt errors are not to do with matrix.org instance compat (and should be largely gone since sept 2024 as per https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHzh2Y7BABQ)

yup, understood. the fact is that Matrix as a protocol supports all the same functionality as Discord (and then some), with the possible exception of arbitrary permission combinations (Matrix uses a permission hierarchy rather than purely role based permissions). Video/voice rooms for instance are demo’d by https://element.io/blog/drop-in-drop-out-chats-with-video-rooms-and-a-new-search-experience/ but clients like Element haven’t shipped them as they’re prioritising other stuff.

while matrix.org does sometimes enable experimental MSCs, they should always be backwards compatible (especially on federation). it doesn’t seem likely that bagder is hitting an edge case where that failed.

Element Web has beta support for video rooms in labs. Cinny hasn’t implemented it yet, but this is a question for Cinny’s roadmap; it’s a client specific thing rather than a limitation of Matrix.

common reasons for having a bad time:
1) if you lose their session (clear the tab; delete the app) and later try to log back in, you will lose history sent since they were last logged in. this is fixed by MSC3814, but implementation has got repeatedly stuck.
2) if you forget their recovery key/passphrase, you'll lose all their history. this could be improved too.
3) if their server is beta or underpowered then risk of badness.
4) abusive spam (we've been working away on T&S)

well, we can work with that. the original choice of HTML for rich text in Matrix was to give us the flexibility for pixel-perfect copy-paste in future, but then we fell down a rabbithole of dealing with Markdown dialects and haven't got back to figuring out how to do richer text while sanitising styling against attacks. Have you already filed a bug for this somewhere ooi?

The Matrix.org Foundation is not only run by people who are vocally opposed to Chat Control, we are duty bound by our mission to oppose it much like we opposed the most egregious parts of the Online Safety Bill before the UK signed it into law.
We do some public advocacy, including raising awareness and signing open letters, and a great deal of advocacy behind the scenes.

Trust & Safety does include moderation of Matrix.org, but it also includes research and development of FOSS tools, techniques, and spec changes, and collaboration with contributors and server operators from across the ecosystem, even beyond Matrix.
As conveners for the ecosystem, we're able to leverage the fact that we operate a flagship instance to advance the experience of the open federation for everybody.
That's why Trust & Safety is its own line item.

The salaries that we pay to our staff cover such things as:
* facilitating open governance,
* volunteer enablement,
* managing spec releases,
* developing Trust & Safety tooling (which inevitably gets open sourced),
* driving spec changes to improve Trust & Safety,
* and coordinating ecosystem wide updates, such as when vulnerabilities are discovered.
So, funds _do_ go to software development and spec writing.

Not at present, but yes we do need to offer an alternative.
We've been using Discourse for our Governing Board, Committees, and Working Groups, so it's probable that we'd double down on that. We can raise this with the Spec Core Team, Governing Board, and Trust & Safety team as next steps to see about advancing this.

Right, matrix.org is back online as of 17:00 UTC. The server is struggling a bit as it catches up. Huge apologies again for the outage; postmortem + ways to avoid a repeat will be forthcoming. Status update: we've restored the 55TB snapshot and subsequent incremental backups, and are about to replay the remaining traffic since the backup. There are still several unknowns, but if things go well the matrix.org instance should be back in 3-4 hours.

Status update: we’re 47TB through restoring the 55TB db snapshot of the matrix.org DB, but then have to rebuild the DB and replay the subsequent 17h of DB traffic, which will take several hours. Thank you for your patience, and apologies once again for the outage.

Sorry, but it's bad news: we haven't been able to restore the DB primary filesystem to a state we're confident in running as a primary (especially given our experiences with slow-burning postgres db corruption). So we're having to do a full 55TB DB snapshot restore from last night, which will take >10h to recover the data, and then >4h to actually restore, and then >3h to catch up on missing traffic. Huge apologies for the outage. Again, folks using their own homeservers are not impacted.

So: the matrix.org database secondary lost its FS due to a RAID failure earlier today (11:17 UTC). Then, we lost the primary at 17:26. We're trying to restore the primary DB FS (which could be fastish), while also doing a point-in-time backup restore from last night (which takes >10h). We believe the incremental DB traffic since last night is intact however. Apologies for the downtime; folks on their own homeserver are of course not impacted.
