I’ve been a web developer for 20+years, looking since 2020 for a “sovereignty respecting” platform on which to build social media apps for libertarians.

Self sovereignty.

Nostr is NOT business friendly.
I aim to address this by offering tools and services for building hybrid “Nostr adjacent” clients, allowing businesses to coexist with freedom tech and even thrive together.
- Configurable Webs of Trust algos for audiences discovery and conversion.
- WoT powered standard APIs for exposing content to Nostr (and other business apps) from within a “black box” business app.
- HTTP AUTH integration on ALL business apps, allows users to create local content WITHOUT signatures or private users accounts.
- Frost powered “login“ for ALL business apps, allowing users to paste “disposable” nsecs into proprietary clients without fear of it being compromised.
- Support for “incremental” (and voluntary) adoption of freedom tech into existing business apps, with easy off-ramps for businesses to transfer more and more siloed data onto the “public” network.

Corect me if I’m wrong … but NOW I see a few major differences in these two “key management” schemes :
FROST vs BIP32 …
1: “sub key” derivation via FROST (called “shares”) can be initialized (once or multiple times) from a users EXISTING npub, providing forward compatibility for existing pubkeys to act as “main identities”. BIP32 (afaikt) must generate a fresh xpub as the “main identity”, excluding existing npubs from reaping the benefits?
2: FROST handles a variety of “multisig” scenarios OOTB, allowing increased security if end users desire it. Implementing BIP32 alone would not provide multisig functionality?
3: FROST libraries are currently in development and ready to be implemented in Nostr clients. BIP32 is not?
OTHERWISE …
- both solve for “disposable” pubkeys which are cryptographically linked to a “main identity” pubkey.
- both require additional implementation by signers and native clients.
- both require a “connected” signer or native client to request the “main identity” pubkey from some remote service.
Forgive my ignorance as I wrap my head around this very real need. Have I missed anything?

FWIW, I am also committed to developing on Nostr for over a year now; and I’ve also thought long and hard and soberly about Nostr’s scalability; and I prolly agree with all of your points.

Yes we need freedom tech, but mostly, we need freedom tech to survive BY BEING USED. Like it or not, Integration with black boxes is how this happens. IMHO

Yes. Good point, actually. Different apps DO have their own demographics and social graphs, and freedom tech social SHOULD be able to roll with this. The reality of “hybrid apps” as Nostr adoption increases (with their private data silos integrated into the freedom tech “experience”) will force this issue for Nostr.

Right. Nobody who doesn’t ALREADY care about freedom will be coming to Nostr for freedom tech. And censorship… people care more about muting voices they don’t like from their feeds than making sure their own voice is heard across other feeds. TBH. People are consumers. BUT ALSO there is a bit of self sovereignty that everybody does care about. Something along the lines of “nobody owns your identity online” coupled with “cross app portability” really does resonate. I’m sure, as we push on the edges of Nostr scalability, these little nuggets will be fleshed out, and THIS will be the “Nostr core” which the “hybrid apps” leverage for their end users.

Yes. But I’m not concerned. Why? Because startups like yours … applying Nostr to vertical markets, building for real world needs and users, pushing Nostr closer toward global adoption by building “hybrid apps” … THESE are the companies that will fill the WIDE CHASM of innovation left open by the “grants only” funding model. We need more of these “risk takers” to push Nostr out of the idealism provided by “grants only”.
Freedom tech NEEDS to be a bit uncomfortable, if it’s ever gonna find a LASTING foothold in our society of conveniences. (Yes, even Bitcoin knows this. Ask the NGU crowd)

I see only 2 EXISTENTIAL THREATS for global Nostr adoption … BOTH of which will be addressed in my (upcoming) onboarding client.
1: Unwanted content and users in feeds and searches : This is ALREADY the single biggest issue for social media users today, and why we see such exodus from traditional platforms. Nostr has yet to “fix” this in a consistent and sovereignty respecting manner for users across all clients.
2 : Lost or compromised private keys. This is a problem unique to Nostr, and inescapably embedded within its core architecture. Keys are NOT passwords, but the “resettable password” and “managed account” experience is what people expect, and what Nostr NEEDS in order to scale. And yet we STILL have no standards for key management or data transfer.
No worries. My onboarding app will fix these both. Stay tuned … 👀

Did you happen to wake up in middle of the night and go out to see the blood red lunar eclipse?
I have an old WWII era 10x monocular, which my grandpa used to bird watch. The moon (and solar expiar last year) filled the field with amazing detail, and I love to remember him in these moments.

Just updated and trying now (guess my TestFlight app was uninstalled?)
Seems like it’s not quite fixed … but better? Timeline now doesn’t jump as I’m reading it (much better) but it also doesn’t return to the post I had “clicked on” after returning to the timeline.
It’s different after updating, in that the timeline location returned to (after waiting “a bit” for new posts to be available) is “above” (showing newer posts) the “clicked” on post rather than always bellow it (showing older posts).
And yes… now that you mention it, I do see some relation to “unread” in how far the timeline jumps.

Checkout this client demo using the GrapeRank algorithm. It scans the (almost) entire Nostr network to find people “close to you” that may NOT be on your radar.
The GrapeRank algorithm was designed by @npub1u5n…ldq3 as a better way to do “Web of Trust”. Last year, he and I worked together to refine it and develop this demo of its capabilities. The algo itself is open source and configurable (in what kind of events it pulls from Nostr and how to interpret these for calculating GrapeRank scores) and has its own repository.

I see this (and ALL disturbances to the 20 teens trend of social media monopolies) as a growing opportunity for Nostr to strengthen its position.
As long as the market is in flux (especially with new developments like this) we can rest assured that people are still looking for freedom.
Social media companies and governments can pay influencers and news media all they like to attract new users. They may even get a bump in recruitment during times of high market disturbance. But as long as their message is “freedom” or “sovereignty” from other “bad actor” social media companies or governments … Nostr will always win.
As long as the market is moving and the message is freedom, people will continue to discover Nostr on their own. The more people that come to Nostr, the more people will stay with Nostr.
Our only task is to make Nostr great.

This seems like a long way (three app install) workaround to the manufactured problem of :
“Nobody wants a dedicated onboarding client … onboarding should happen from within the social client”
I happen to think there is a LOT of value in just making a GREAT onboarding client that:
- introduces a user to the world of Nostr
- creates a profile and key pair with minimal friction and zero KYC.
- helps new users to discover all their friends friends who are using Nostr
- helps with discovery (and setup) of clients and relays that are used within their network of friends.
- continues on as an account hub, key manager, nostr activity monitor, and app discovery client for the new user.
- rewards existing users for onboarding (and retaining) their friends on Nostr.
This is what I’m (still) building … and happy to collaborate.

Problem is, it’s NOT OPENSOURCE. This matters MORE than you think.

AFAIK, this is done by sending a NIP-42 ephemeral event. Regular HTTP auth DOES NOT WORK over nostr, because there is no server side to verify credentials. NIP-42 is how relays can dynamically authenticate client access.

So what is “the point” you refuse to give in to?
My point is that “global population decline” is a manufactured fear and that attention to “bettering ones impact on society” will be at least as useful for humans “on aggregate” as making more babies.
I don’t think we actually disagree here, or even on the fact that making babies is in general an important activity for humanity to continue with.
Maybe we disagree on the effect that regional demographics might have on the global population? … I’m not sure.

Maybe so. But there will always be babies to build for.
If babies are fuel for the vehicle of society then good ideas are the steering mechanism. Power to go means nothing if the vehicle has driven off the road.
While breeding is needed, it is FAR from being the only useful thing in life.

Custom feeds based on NIP-51 npub lists?
@npub1u5n…ldq3 is wrangling me in to help get brainstorm.ninja publishing (hopefully dynamic) “suggested users” lists based on shared interest and WoT score. This will be a CROSS CLIENT tool that EVERYBODY can make use of to build THEIR OWN custom interest feeds.
Wondering what native clients ALREADY or will SOON implement NIP-51 lists for user generated custom feeds?

Yes. This simple reality that we naturally “follow” or “amplify” what others are doing is indeed a hallmark of sociality. This is a centralizing force that we leverage to learn from and align with each other.
Centralization is what we do well, almost too well. Centralization creates bigger societies and feeds bigger government and bigger business.
No. I am not suggesting equality of outcome. Indeed, equality can only be measured and outcome can only be enforced by the same centralizing forces. Not this.
To be clear, I am pointing out the obvious fact that (as is human nature) followers will always prefer to amplify the signal that others are following. Having less to do with quality of content than influencer power, this IS a centralizing force. No bones about it.
I have no solution or desire to define or impose fairness. I am simply pointing out the irony of “decentralization” as a desired feature in a social network.
It ain’t easy.
