Following up on the hospital part -- people with complex cases here end up going to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD -- ~2 hours' drive away.
1. teaching and research hospital, not scared by weird cases,
2. all the specialties are there, & docs who have seen so many different cases.

A long read, "Unraveling my medical mystery" -- a lot there, being w/o a diagnosis means there's no treatment plan, lots of agony until you get the right doc or some treatment just works.
Tbh I think going to a NYC hospital was really helpful, in a way it would not be in more rural areas.
It was good for me to read this piece, I'm coming around that it doesn't matter what disease it is (for me), just which treatment works. The wrinkle is insurance wants a Dx code.

Work stuff, orchard management edition: TIL (or remembered?) that fruit growers use deficit irrigation to control final fruit size.
Depending on pruning or thinning, ID fruits can be HUGE, like mini pumpkins. But consumers want a single-serving fruit, not too big, not too small (thought I am seeing small apples marketed for kids in the supermarket atm).

I have a lot of medical appt.s, 2-5/week, and after a year of this, I discovered another hack s.t. they are more tolerable. Call the office and ask how far behind they are, and then arrive later instead of sitting in a room for that time. Today I
- bought some houseplants,
- walked a lap of a big parking lot,
- got a snack,
Sure beats a windowless room. (Though I can almost fall asleep on an exam table at this point.)

I have had a couple "papers reviewers hate," this one is on multi-camera calibration. The biggest issue from reviewers last time? We didn't have an updated version of the paper on arXiv, and the code was not, but not updated to the most recent version.
I am a pro data and code release person, but it takes so much time and these releases are not recognized (well) by orgs.

The plant is Fallopia aubertii, so yes related or similar. Mom reports that the vine always dies back to the ground and then grows back from the roots after a winter -- so in the rocky space she has, it has not taken over like ivy.

Silvervine fleeceflower at Mom's. She uses it to cover a big rocky outcropping, which are common here. I did not know the name of this vine, but found it while idly reading M. Dirr's tree and shrubs book.

The other player + amplifier I got cheap on eBay. I love the sound quality.

disease A symptom B review in Google Scholar.
I did not study the paper like I do for my own work. It was more to get a general idea of what things are known, what are unknown, which treatments are patient-dependent. I am still mainly reading reviews, but there were a couple topics I wanted more info about, another search.
Note frequently-used unknown words in the margin & get a working definition.

But it is not easier, even playing solitaire games. I am starting to not pick it up at all because I am afraid of getting sucked in.

A good question. I avoid games on my phone because I avoid my phone, I just hate the interface. It might be good that Mastodon is slow slow on it, I don't check it as much. But I have been playing games on a tablet and sometimes it is hard to stop even when I am tired. I have been practicing quitting in the middle of a game. WIP.

@npub1a4t…eauf 👀 Your post reminds me that my ferns are doing a whole lot of nothing and I could experiment with some ferns in the bog. Hmmm. Best wishes with the invasive removal! What are your top problem plants there?

I'm thinking about a new garden, starting it in the fall, and talked myself out of water but was interested in some wetland plants.
It turns out there are a lot of results for "how to build a bog garden" ... this one was good, from Longwood Gardens in PA.
