I’m less active on non-Nostr social media (Twitter) in general so I may not be the best representative. For me:
- SMS, Email, and LinkedIn DMs are how I talk one v one, and that’s still how I share most papers I come across
- OpenReview is a great system for actual reviewing of papers that is in the public domain, although a more formal process
- lots of folks like subreddits like r/machinelearning
- ResearchGate is one of the best platforms to directly request a paper from an author that is otherwise behind a paywall you don’t have access to. When you publish behind paywalls (less common but sometimes still requires) authors maintain the ability to share 1 v 1 with anyone, they just can’t post publicly
- Twitter is where most casual short form discussions happen
I started a moderated community called AI-papers and posted a paper review but then didn’t really pursue sharing that - one issue was someone had a pending post but I didn’t have a way to get notified so I saw it super late

Interesting alternative to kinds - I think the main benefit here is that the replacement to the “kind” is now English readable. So instead of having to look up what the kind number is, the new “event path” literally says what it is.
We could still have path term overload issues, although they might be less common.
Unfortunately it will still require coordination amongst devs to ensure we don’t have a billion top level folders… which would end up replacing kinds with single words.

What interesting computer science problems arise in Nostr development? I'm thinking of putting together a talk on this for CS folks that aren't familiar with Nostr. Here's what I have so far, and please suggest new items or revisions to current ones:
- public/private key encryption schemes between individuals, groups, groups with moderators, temporary delegations of key signing (#nsecbunker)
- graph analysis and scoring to solve problems like web of trust (#WoT)
- distributed file storage and sharing, like what #blossom is trying to do
I know there's got to be a lot more, 🙏 in advance

I saw you have the DVM kinds on there (5000-5999, 6000-6999). For some reason 5666 and 6666 are not job requests. I’m not sure what they are and who is using them, but I’ve seen a few thousand of them floating around. Mostly dropping this note here so I don’t forget. I’ll see if I can post an update later

Nostr is so freaking cool. @nprofile…sgp7 created an event for our meetup next Tuesday, then I RSVP'ed for it on Flockstr. Today I tried Coracle for the first time and after I logged in, the meetup shows up on my calendar without me having to do anything.

Iris has had this for a long time where you could set how many degrees of “follow” for your feed. Like only see posts from my followers and my followers’ followers. Seems lots of other apps have this too.
Maybe before you follow someone new you can see how connected they are to your current network, and if they are barely connected maybe you be more careful before following them, etc

If you are having trouble working with nostr relays, etc and you are using minimal cloud infrastructure (like 1 vcpu and 1gb RAM), you may find that bumping it up to the next tier fixes some problems.

I'm so so so happy for all the things WoT. Ideas aren't that new, but now that we have Nostr we can actually build amazing WoT stuff. Every time I see a WoT post I smile.
I also love it because it reduces the need to identify bots vs. humans, which I think is usually a trap. If you need to distinguish between bots and humans for your app to work, you aren't doing it right. But so far, this is easier said than done.

Would relays be kicking me off or just decide to stop responding if I'm subscribed for too long? Is there any way I could detect that if it happens?
I should say that what I'm trying to do is run a python program that forever listens for DVM related events. I've been using a version of nostr_client() from here: https://github.com/believethehype/nostrdvm/blob/main/tests/test_dvm_client.py
It does look like this has been updated since I last started using it, maybe I should adapt this most recent code.

I did pass part of the source code through an LLM and it guessed that the timeout is being used for how long to listen for events, rather than the window of time in which events were published.
