ok so since i'm lagging on December adventure im gonna start retroactively documenting things i've done in the past few days towards it :D

repurposed my older gaming PC that was no longer in use by my SO into a dedicated linux desktop running arch linux and i3. This is probably the most powerful Linux computer i've had yet. everything that ran linux was either in a VM or ran on old and slow hardware. so....
also, I forgot how much fun 'Ricing' is :3

i still haven't really decided or started something for december adventure this year. currently i'm working on some simple modern web apps using Nuxt as a refresher course for an upcoming work contract but that doesn't really feel like it fits in the essence of what December adventure is.
Something i've been meaning to get into more again is doing some lisp stuff, and recently talked to someone who happens to be a professor at a university who has a while slew of educational lisp material focused on racket mainly and i've been meaning to jump into it.
Perhaps this should be my December adventure.

neat, i never thought about using i3 like this tbh, but i do see why it could be nice, kindof like a plan9 esque thing. i always reached for i3 for the tiling wm which i guess most people do. might have to play around with a i3 install and get this going.
I wonder if there's some way to draw new windows that spin up new shells like on plan9 as well.

the cynical in me wants to just brush these kinds of stories as one offs or special circumstance cases, having seen many immigrants living a rough life working their ass off with very humble returns for their efforts.
But i also do believe (perhaps i want or simply _need_ to believe) that it is possible to have a sane, human scale life if you really look for it.
we'll see.
all i know is that whatever i'm doing now is unsustainable.

lovely and inspiring story but sadly it's near impossible for me to pivot in such a way because of responsibilities.
At least now i'm slowly working towards alleviating the pressure points but it's a long and hard process and can't remove them all.

Marie and I have been dreaming about it for a few years now... we keep perusing the marketplate listings and sending each other seemingly well prices boats without really knowing much about them. we keep telling ourselves one summer we'll buy one and dock it at her parent's place since they live on a lake (again no idea if that's even a possibility or not) and practice sailing on the lake
we have yet to do anything towards the goal but evert summer we replay the same game.

Last summer (in fact for the last few summers) I started skateboarding again after 10+ years of completely off the board. It felt amazing to be able to ride again and skate. it awakened something in me that i had completely forgotten about.
Sadly though due to my lack of physical activity prior, it would leave me feeling completely sore and broken after every session and almost every time, i would get a skate stopping injury within a few weeks of skating.
It's been quit difficult dealing with this mentally, feeling like you lost something you had before.
This year i am taking it upon myself to start early and prep my body for the skate season that is coming shortly. I want to be able to skate again comfortably and not get innjured everytime.
There's nothing like just going out and skating everyday to really rehab your body but i'm trying to really reinforce the weak spots as well as rehab the injured spots.
Sadly, my knee ankle and shoulder (all on the same side) are kinda messed up now. they don't feel as stable or strong as the other side. it's such a fucked up mental battle feeling this weakness but i really want to push through it and regain the strength i once had.
I have a very bad history with training sadly, both from a consistency standpoint but more importantly from a "knowing wtf i need to do" standpoint.
I can't get myself to really dive into the whole training world everytime i try to find a good routine i get so overwhelmed by all the choices and schedules and variations i have no clue wtf i should be doing and i think i end up doing just a bunch of random things that will often not be enough to have a considerable benefit to me...
but hiring a personal training is so expensive and not accessible either so i don't really know what other solutions are there...

I am really tired of all the sensationalism and rage/click bait content that you find everywhere online. Almost all spaces online now seem to just be that and constantly having to mentally filter out all the noise is really tiring and demoralizing.
And like, there's so much good things online, so much awesome creative wonderful gems from awesome people that exist but one has to really look through all the garbage in order to find them and while an initial instinct would be to stop using these platforms, it would be like "throwing the baby with the bathwater" thing. We would lose so much.
I really don't know what the solution is, it will be impossible to collectively get every "good creative person and content" onto a alternative platform that does not reward rage / attention farming. things are not that black and white. even people who are genuinely great people and create great content are forced to "play the rage / click bait game" in order to manage a living and pursue creating their work.

I want to work on cool shit, but i never know what cool shit to work on.
I see so many amazing people making so many amazing tools and explorations and art and I always feel like I'm missing out. And yet, i never actually do anything about it, not for lack of trying but for lack of any creative, cool ideas i have on my own.
I want to explore and share and discuss with peers. i want to contribute something back to the world. but to be perfectly honest... most of the time when i see cool projects and posts from people, i feel so inferior and dumb.
Any idea i come up with on my own feels like just a variation of a todo app (i.e. something that is so incredibly basic and lame and has no value)
I'll often blame it on the fact that i only "know" javascript or that I did not get a education in computer science or that i don't know how the entire computing stack is composed, but none of those arguments hold up when i look around and see so many cool creative projects using javascript or lua or even just simple web pages.
The problem is me. I just clearly don't have what it takes.
I have the frustrations of not being satisfied with the mundane work i do but clearly do not have the drive or creativity to do something about it.
I guess in a sense you can say i'm just a poser trying to pretend to be someone i am not.
In this modern age with so abundance of technology, I have all the tools at my disposal to do something creative, rewarding, energizing, fulfilling and yet... i always end up drawing a blank.
The problem is me. I am the problem.

somehow, even without all the glitz and glamour of modern macOS, a simple linux (Lubuntu) desktop with a minimal emacs config and a terminal feel the most gratifying to use.

last summer while on a camping trip in northern Quebec we went on a hike and got lost. Took us 6 hours to manage to get back to the car. There was a children summer camp near by but I’m not sure if they had radios. But regardless, that experience definitely left me shook and realized we need robust resilient communication devices when our modern tech fails (as our phones had no connection at all to reach out to anyone)
I tried to whistle SOS in Morse across the lake but no one heard

wow.. that really broke my heart reading this.
Sadly it seems that more and more these sorts of things are happening and bigots are sadly feeling confident enough to show their true colors.
the one good side of all that is that we will now see for real who are these people moving forward but the whole world has suffered a set back for equal rights and egalitarianism.
as is the case in everything now, money is the root of all evil. it attracts the worst people and gives them the most power that they use to oppress others.
Your "Weathering software winter" has had such a powerful impact on me, exposing me to so many new concepts and ideas and ideologies that i relate to but had no idea existed previously. only being aware of handmade the last couple of years, it felt so refreshing seeing a platform where people who do not subscribe to the typical "tech bro" identity could be a part of and share their own views and thoughts.
Let's hope that this brief period of inclusiveness in the public view will inspire others to follow suit and continue delivering such platforms.

indeed. The signs have been there for a long time but one is so intrenched into that ecosystem that it becomes a struggle to just accept what is happening and take action against it.
Thankfully my wife and I have been already implementing a lot of the self sustaining lifestyle into our daily habits and slowly detaching from these dependencies because we’ve been seeing the signs but yeah, even so, it still feels sudden and shocking
While I have been trying to educate and warn people around me, I’ve still bought and used these services and platforms simply because they are just part of our social norms now but I just can’t morally justify it anymore.
I already said that my NY resolution is to detach from all these services and platforms and now more so than ever I feel not only the desire to, but the need to.

I remember reading about this on the SDF page when i was doing the plan9 bootcamp.
There is a similar project on the norns platform (monome.org) called Norns Pirate radio where it's a script that basically references and downloads a library of oog files that are uploaded by people to a website and plays them continuously on different "frequencies"

I struggle with the same dilemma. I have most of my friends and family either in other cities or across the planet. None of them really give 2 shits about any of the things that we care about either big tech and corporations and abuse and all that. They just use the platforms and don’t give it a second thought.
I’ve wanted to delete my accounts for years now but whenever I go on a social platform hiatus I just end up losing contact with all of them.
Family gathering plans and friends invitations always happen through Facebook …etc etc
I don’t have a solution. I feel like a hypocrite, but I try as much as I can not to use those platforms other than talking to friends and family directly.
