so i wanted to learn some category theory.
opened up a textbook on one side, agda on the other, and started trying to formalize the concepts and proofs
but i hit a bug in how agda’s pretty printer behaves. one i couldn’t easily work around
so i decided i’ll finally start contributing to agda and try to fix it myself
started poking around, accidentally figured out a different bug that I previously thought wasn’t worth looking into
but okay, gonna keep digging into the bug that actually led me down this path.
soon i found myself wanting to take a look at how agda’s AST looks in practice in one specific case, only to find that there isn’t really a way to do that, because haskell’s Show prints way too much information, all in one line, filling the entire terminal screen with mostly irrelevant info
so i did the natural thing and started writing a pretty printer for this purpose
eventually i got annoyed that each time i compiled agda, it would spend a good 30 seconds doing some kind of build system bookkeeping
like, i measured. a build with the entire cache fresh already would take 30 fucking seconds
as 30 seconds is enough time for me to start scrolling through fedi, i decided i need to look into this
so i started poking around the surprisingly complex makefile, learning more than i ever wanted to know about make
finally found the culprit: in a maze of includes, recursive make invocations and variable expansion, various variations of stack –dest-dir would get called like. way too many times during the build. and each of those would take 750ms to initialize, print the path to the build directory and exit
sigh, okay. i guess i’ll need to optimize the makefile a bit
managed to get it down to 10s for a do-nothing build. scoured the internet looking for a feature of make that would be useful to bring it down further
didn’t find it. as far as i can tell, “expand lazily, but then cache it” is not a behavior that’s available in gnu make, despite the absolute abundance of features they added on top of what posix specifies
now, thankfully i know better than to attempt upstreaming a feature into gnu make. and anyway, in this case the good folks at stack overflow gave me a hint on what absolute crimes i could commit in that makefile to make it go faster
but while i was contemplating my plan, i wondered: why does stack take 750ms to print a path in the first place?
after execsnoop and strace didn’t give me any hints, i decided to try using the linux profiler “perf”, which i’m sure you know is a master class in UX design
(it is not)
so i open the “perf report” and see a bunch of addresses for which i don’t have debuginfo. suspiciously small addresses too, like 0x5ddc
i start to notice the feeling of despair creeping up on me, but decide to persevere for at least a little bit more
i choose the hottest sample on the report and select “Annotate 00…005ddc”
now, i want you to consider that what i saw next was enough to get me to write out this entire rant. take a moment to internalize that.
what batshit insane assembly did i see? what could possibly have been this upsetting?
“Press ‘h’ for help on key bindings”, it said. followed immediately by “erf: Segmentation fault”, that’s right, erf, without the p.
then came a backtrace. one that listed the function name for each stack frame, as well as the source code file in which it were defined.
but the line number of all these entries is fucking 0 for some reason, as if to mock me
like, it’s not like i cared at this point where exactly the segfault happened, because even i do have my limits
but the computer apparently decided to find one more place in which it could subtly signal that there’s a nugget of insanity lurking within, to really get that eye twitchin’
and all i wanted was to learn some category theory

neat piece of invisible infrastructure: the Rust portable-atomic crate
your platform doesn’t support a particular type of atomic natively? not a problem, this crate gives you an implementation anyway
how? well there’s a global lock, you see. or, rather, 67 global locks, and which one gets used depends on the address of the atomic mod 67.
but, that’s kinda inefficient, so you wouldn’t want to use it unless it’s your only choice, right?
so they have a bunch of platform specific implementations, such as “let’s detect at runtime if cmpxchg16b is supported” or “this is a microcontroller so if we read it within one instruction we’re fine, and otherwise just disable the interrupts”
and as a result you can just use it and not really think about it, because in 99% of cases it’s gonna do the same thing as what you’d end up with if you bothered to optimize it manually
the ratio of elaborate internals to unassuming API surface is so great here you could easily blink and miss the fact that someone is pulling off heroic feats to make this happen

I’m about 3/4 of the way into Epigram: Practical Programming with Dependent Types (by @nprofile…ddsj). even though i started reading to learn about Epigram, it also explained to me how to design dependently-typed programs better than anything else I had learned so far
I highly recommend that you find the time to read it — at least some of it should transfer outside of Epigram (albeit it may take some effort at times. the custom eliminators feature could make an interesting testcase for Lean’s metaprogramming facilities, for example)

and, 1200 lines of diff later, it works well enough to find the first bit we told it about in the bitstream!
feels weird, considering how I've long felt that this would be way too complicated to just get into it...

thinking about that time i was testing RSS readers on my website and one of them wasn't able to find the feed because it was trying to parse HTML with regex and it was choking on how the minifier chose to emit the relevant <link> tag
the RSS reader in question was a browser extension with full access to the DOM APIs, in case you were wondering.
i did not dare look at how it's parsing the feed XML.

concept: dependant type theory that lets you define your own non-primitive case-distinctions on types, such that this integrates nicely into pattern-matching and exhaustiveness checking
for example, let’s say that you have defined Fin n = (k : Nat) ⨯ (k < n) because that gets you better evaluation performance. once you prove that all values of Fin (n + 1) are either 0 or succ (k : Fin n), you should still be able to index other datatypes with these “virtual constructors” of Fin and have pattern matching work as well as it would if you had defined Fin in terms of these constructors in the first place

@nprofile…6kk0 @nprofile…nalw This is something that I feel is commonly misunderstood about Rust by people outside the community: the whole point of Rust is that you can build sound abstractions on top of small amounts of unsafe code. This is the key tradeoff that Rust got right: if you insist that the compiler is able to verify absolutely everything, you either get extremely limited expressiveness, or introduce a lot of complexity for being able to prove arbitrary memory management patterns correct (see e.g. RefinedC and how they essentially need to pull in an entire proof assistant, or ATS which again, is itself a very obtuse proof assistant).
Rust found the perfect middle ground: lots of practical impact for correctness, with the effort required still being low enough to get massive adoption.

The Napkin project is a personal exposition project of mine aimed at making higher math accessible to high school students. The philosophy is stated in the preamble:
I’ll be eating a quick lunch with some friends of mine who are still in high school. They’ll ask me what I’ve been up to the last few weeks, and I’ll tell them that I’ve been learning category theory. They’ll ask me what category theory is about. I tell them it’s about abstracting things by looking at just the structure-preserving morphisms between them, rather than the objects themselves. I’ll try to give them the standard example Gp, but then I’ll realize that they don’t know what a homomorphism is. So then I’ll start trying to explain what a homomorphism is, but then I’ll remember that they haven’t learned what a group is. So then I’ll start trying to explain what a group is, but by the time I finish writing the group axioms on my napkin, they’ve already forgotten why I was talking about groups in the first place. And then it’s 1PM, people need to go places, and I can’t help but think:
Man, if I had forty hours instead of forty minutes, I bet I could actually have explained this all.
This book is my attempt at those forty hours.

@nprofile…rcc0 @nprofile…2aya it doesn't unless it has to, but it can transparently choose between building from source and pulling a binary from cache, because everything that could've possibly affected the build is accounted for.
so, as long as you trust your cache (buildfarm), you can transparently pull in binaries when available but fallback to a source build if your config does something weird like "thisPackage.butMakeTheCompiler beClangInstead" or you check out an old nixpkgs that isn't cached anymore

In C23 (or, rather the N3220 draft), in 6.5.4.2 “Address and indirection operators”, paragraph 3:
The unary & operator yields the address of its operand. If the operand has type “type”, the result has type “pointer to type”. If the operand is the result of a unary * operator, neither that operator nor the & operator is evaluated and the result is as if both were omitted, except that the constraints on the operators still apply and the result is not an lvalue. Similarly, if the operand is the result of a [] operator, neither the & operator nor the unary * that is implied by the [] is evaluated and the result is as if the & operator were removed and the [] operator were changed to a + operator.
