In 1968, the CIA picked up an audio transmission from outer space. A voice said, in Russian, "The flight is proceeding according to normal; we’re approaching the surface..." When NASA learned this, they were shocked: had the Soviets beaten them to the moon?
As it turned out, this was a prank: cosmonaut Pavel Popovich, who was safely on Earth, relayed the message through Zond 5, a moon probe, whose most intelligent passengers were two Russian tortoises. (They made it back safe and sound.)

I mean, I sort of understand: I guess it's the kind of book which most people wouldn't read cover to cover, but rather dip into. So all those tables and indexes make sense.
What would make even more sense would be the same information contained in some medium not made of dead trees and weighing half a kilogram, in which you could somehow "click" or "tap" all those cross-references to jump from one place to another. If only such a format existed...

There's another book whose main content is 1376 pages long, the front matter is 160 pages, and there's 76 pages' worth of back matter (glossary and index) in the back.

Close, 56. The book in total is almost 500 pages long, so more than 10% is front matter: acknowledgments, a bio of the editor, bios of the contributors, 2 forewords (!), a 10-page table of contents, and multiple tables of cases mentioned in the book. Also, each one of these things starts on a right-hand page, so throw in some blank pages to get to 56. There's also an 18-page index in the back.
