Lots of posts going around that Wikileaks has deleted the DNC Email leak as part of Assange's plea deal.
This is incorrect information. 👇
It is being reported due to a lack of context of the Saipan hearing published by the Australian newspaper The Age.
The Age's live report states that "The court hears the US lawyers are satisfied that Assange has undertaken a requirement to have WikiLeaks destroy the classified information."
This statement only pertains to unpublished classified information as well as to the extent it is in the control of Assange to evoke the destroying of such documents according to the plea agreement.
The DNC Email leak has been widely unavailable returning an internal server error since at least 2023. WL has had numerous server issues over the years - this is nothing new.
(Lots of people also conflating the DNC leak with the Clinton Email leak; these are two separate things.) Let's normalize to always check official sources.

Bitcoin journalism is fucked.
I started The Rage because I'm tired of investors and advertisers telling me what to do for below minimum wage compensation.
What we need are publications willing to let journalists investigate the crap out of the companies, representatives and people enabling the building of surveillance tech behind the scenes.

There is no lack of talented, experienced, investigative journalists covering bitcoin. The problem is that they write what the powers that be don't want you to hear – so many are out of a job, dabbling away at the next press release for mainstream media, or doing below-minimum wage contract work to pay the bills.
I'm incredibly overwhelmed by all the positive feedback we've been getting for The Rage. In just 8 weeks we've scooped major publications and drove discussions around AML, Samourai and Tornado Cash together with your help. We've even made enough to cover operations with almost 400$ raised, thanks to all the zappers out there.

A lot of people seem to see voting for trump as „the lesser of two evils“, wondering what else they can do to protect their bitcoin from regulatory overreach.
But the US isnt „the greatest country in the world“ because of its presidents - if anything, it is *in spite* of them.
The US government consists of more than the presidency. It has a fairly well working judiciary in place, which exists to help the people hold the government accountable and ensure that no laws will be passed infringing on your rights (doesnt always work but often does).
From a legal perspective, the US is a great place for bitcoin due to its laws around free speech and enterprise, which enshrines the use and ownership of bitcoin not just as property, but as a tool for communication.
The problem ergo isnt the politicians. The problem is your own complete political apathy when it comes to anything other than elections.
If you want to protect your bitcoin, stop spending millions of dollars and thousands of hours supporting political candidates who will say anything to get your votes only to drop you like a hot potato once elected. Instead, use that time and money to boycott and organize - its what the system was designed for.
There are enough grounds to sue the US government, private citizens, companies and institutions if the right to own, use or interact with bitcoin was to be infringed, and its how the majority of civil liberties were established.
Ending racial segregation in schools didnt happen by presidential decree - it happend through Brown vs. Board of Education. The right to an attorney: Gideon v Wrainwright. Interracial marriage: Loving v Virginia. Burning of the US flag as speech: Texas v Johnson. Right to abortion (though now overturned): Roe v Wade. Same sex marriage: Obergefell v Hodges. Porn on the internet: ACLU v Reno.
You have rights, and you need to stop thinking that you are powerless without some babbling politician to enforce them. Spend the time and money on grassroots organizing, which is much more in the spirit of bitcoin anway. Politicians hate this trick.

Update: Bitrefill has granted me a refund – thanks to everyone who drew attention to this. Have to say I am pretty disappointed that it took a public outrcry to get my money back, and I don't find this very fair treatment for people that may lack a public platform.
Still going to continue using their services as I've never had issues before, so I hope this will be the first and last time. Also hope that they'll work on improving their customer service and be more diligent in selection and description of products in the future to avoid situations like these for others.

PSA on one of my favorite bitcoin companies (until today unfortunately).
Bitrefill has sold me prepaid mastercards from a company that appears to be a scam. Unfortunately bitrefill is not answering my DMs and customer support has been handwaving arguments all day. I'm honestly somewhere between angry, sad and disappointed and really at a lost for words rn, so I hope this helps me get my money back.
I bought several of these prepaid Mastercards on Bitrefill's site, advertised as ‚accepted anywhere Mastercard is accepted‘. Except they’re not accepted ‚anywhere Mastercard is accepted‘ – in fact, they are accepted nowhere returning 'this card is not recognized'.
So now my money is stuck, and Bitrefill says it can’t give it back because it sold me a valid giftcard coupon for a product that does not seem to be legitimate.
I’m a huge fan of bitrefill and have been using their services for years, so I’m extremely surprised that they would a) offer such a product in the first place and b) respond (or rather not respond) the way they did when being confronted with the problem.
It seems that bitrefill has done zero due diligence on this product and simply copy/pasted their marketing claims to their site. I have always trusted bitrefill to offer high quality products so I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it would be great if they could give me my money back after a series of very unsuccessful customer support contact with their team.
I have spent all day going through several mind bending headaches in attempts to retrieve my money which seems to be close to impossible looking at trust pilot reviews. As I’ve also shared with bitrefill's customer support agent, I’m not the only person who has had this experience with this card issuer, after which the bitrefill agent apparently decided to just stop responding.
My DMs are open to resolve this issue (and I hope bitrefill will take this product off of their site immediately).

New info on TDev, or rather more non-info. Portugese Metropolitan Police responded to have no info (this was to be expected).
But here's where it get's interesting. I just called the Policia Judiciaria, and their stonewalling is insane. After identifying myself as a journalist, the officer's tone completely changed. She told me I was not entitled to any information and even refused to give her name. I have never experienced anything like this.
@ Policia Judiciaria: Under Articles 10 and 6(1) of the European Convention on Human Rights, to which your country is a signatory, you are required to inform the press on cases of public interest. In addition, your officers are required to identify themselves on request.
Your agency is thereby not just obstructing the public's right to receive information without interference by public authorities, as well as Mr. Hill's right to transparent judicial proceedings, but also in violation of your own local laws governing identification requirements of public officers. I suggest you get your house in order.

Really interesting observation since spending six (6) days on Nostr: this thing is complete dopamine detox. As a result people seem to actually engage with each other and share their thoughts instead of engineering posts and comments to get more likes or followers.

Right but propagating exclusively via Tor/I2P even via proxy is not desirable for everyone due to reliability, but again its def an improvement. I don't think an anonymity set assumption makes sense for Dandelion++ as we're not hiding in a crowd, it's rather the idea of a sneakernet: since P2P traffic is encrypted now it's more the idea of passing messages out of band. You could likely observe who is running a stempool, but shouldn't be able to see much more beyond that

Oh wow good question! I dont think so bc Erlay‘s goal is scaling not privacy, as it assumes that „every unreachable node is directly connected to several reachable nodes, this policy ensures that a transaction is quickly propagated to be within one hop from most of the nodes in the network“ - I think that obfuscating one hop (sometimes, not all the time) as a byproduct would probably not be enough to reliably break BS heuristics, but I wonder if parts of the BIP could be used to improve the stempool idea - would def be interesting to see an analysis from a privacy perspective for this!

Okay Nostr peeps we need to talk. I know Ive been on here for like 5 minutes and Im already complaining but hear me out.
Id really like to publish my newsletter directly on Nostr. You dont need to worry about clicking an extra link, I dont need to worry about writing a stupid summary, everyone is happy.
But here‘s the problem. Iris shows link previews and organizes pics where they are placed in the text. Primal does the same, but doesnt show link previews. Damus shows link previews, but organizes pics in a carousel. If I post both pics and link previews, the content repeats and gets unnecessarily long. If I dont, everything is all over the place.
Can you guys like get together and have a standard for this or something? Because that would be pretty helpful. Thanks!

Three weeks ago I wrote an article on the EU's new AMLR in Bitcoin Magazine, detailing how the EU passed ALM laws restricting the use of Bitcoin privacy tools without any data to back up their claims that privacy heightens money laundering and terrorist financing risks.
Alex Stachtchenko took it a step further and ran the numbers. For every Euro confiscated, 200€ are spent. This means that the EU's AML compliance costs of 144B Euro exceeds all money ascribed to crime per year at 110B Euro – and still, 99% of criminal profits escape confiscation.
Despite their absolute inefficiency AML laws continue to be expanded, subjecting all EU citizens to total financial surveillance for the price of catching 1%. It is a system that has grown completely out of control and is in no way proportionate to the right to privacy enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
It's a long read, and its in French so you'll need to translate it, but I guarantee that it will be worth every minute of your time.

Im not sure I understand your argument re cjs, is it that CISA makes batching in general cheaper with cjs being a byproduct, meaning that private txs would have no economic benefit over batched txs and, assuming cjs will continue to be centrally coordinated in a fee model, cj txs continue to be less economically favorable to non-cj txs even with CISA?
If I understand this correctly I agree that CISA doesn't technically address your OP. Practically I think I disagree if we assume that the tx gets cheaper the bigger it gets with full aggregation – reaching sizes of 400+ inputs will likely mostly be unachievable for single signers, so i think cjs practically would have an economic benefit over non-private txs excluding fees (at least until there is non-private CISA collaboration).
Do you have any proposals in mind that would explicitly make privacy cheaper than non-privacy?

I fundamentally disagree with this for several reasons.
First, re counterparty risk, this is what reputation scores are for, and in my experience they work fairly well. Second, I think we are speaking from extremely different perspectives here. When I dont have a means of payment (say bc my bank blocked my account), I really dont care weather I'll pay a premium on my tx because my plan is not do engange in degen trading but to have money to live. Comparing a P2P marketplace necessary for people to transact in private (or even at all) to broker interfaces is not the right approach here imoo.
The point is also not that people are 'lazy users' – of course its nice for stuff to work at the click of a button, but the point is that people can easily be overwhelmed when facing complex systems, keeping them from using them at all – not because they are lazy, but because they dont understand them, which then also speaks to the liquidity issue.
Lastly, and again speaking to perspective, Im not talking about people doing six figure trades here. Im talking about people who earn their income in bitcoin or have no other means of payment and need to pay their bills, who will be facing complete financial exclusion unless they are willing to submit themselves to full surveillance tyranny.

Unpopular opinion, but here it goes: UX is the most important problem we need to solve for Bitcoin Privacy.
We can hate on KYC exchanges all we want, but they've got UX nailed down. We cannot expect privacy to become the norm when I have to take an hour out of my day to make a P2P trade.
Now that CASPs will start delisting privacy assets like Monero and blocking coinjoined btc with the EU's new AMLR, we're being stripped of using regulated exchanges even semi-privately. This makes P2P exchanges like BISQ Network even more important, but its of no use to regular users when you need an introductory course in computer science before understanding what's going on in the app.

If you already know how to use git or github and can code a little, ask where you could find the corresponding code for your problem in your issue and offer to do a PR. If you can't, ask what assets would be needed to implement your proposal. Remember that people are nice and generally happy about new contributors, even if you're a beginner.

Statistics like these make chain analysis firms look like your friends. They're not. Here's why:
Statistics showing that the overall use of cryptocurrencies is *not* illicit help us fight FUD. They're also necessary for chain analysis companies to keep existing: no cryptocurrencies, no business model.
The problem arises with how chain analysis firms *calculate* the use of illicit transactions, as this includes the use of privacy technologies.
For example, every transaction involved in a coinjoin is flagged as illicit by chain analysis firms. This completely distorts the overall volume of illicit transactions. The actual volume of illicit transactions (hacked funds, sanctioned entities, etc) is *much lower*.
Privacy is not just a human right, it is also outlined in the US constitution via the 4th amendment, as well as via federal financial privacy regulations.
If you want to have an intellectually honest debate about illicit transaction volume, stop criminalizing privacy.
For context: Every coinjoin/"mixing" transaction is deemed as incompliant by blockchain analysis software by default and therefore "illicit".

None of these proposals are alleging for companies to "cripple their services", and no one will be able to "get Signal, WhatsApp and other tools from outside of the UK".
What is being proposed is a practice called *Client Side Screening*. With client side screening, the state will infest every citizens phone with literal malware to monitor messages *before* they are being encrypted by whichever app you use – whether you've downloaded a version from the UK or Timbuktu.
