“Palestinian civil society, grassroots movements, political organizations, and international solidarity actors should reject depoliticized frameworks that operate without an immediate and permanent ceasefire. They must also press for enforceable guarantees against renewed military assault and for accountability for the genocide. They should insist that both reconstruction and governance arrangements are grounded in Palestinian political agency and collective decision-making rather than technocratic neutrality imposed under external colonial control.”

“Heatwaves: anger and sadness. And hope, despite everything
In less than two months, Europe has been hit by three heatwaves that are exceptional in terms of their early onset, intensity, duration and geographical extent.
These heatwaves form part of a pattern of extreme weather events that are becoming increasingly frequent across the globe.
The conclusion is clear: global warming is, right now, plunging the Earth into a catastrophe that is irreversible on a human timescale. A catastrophe that hits the poor in poor countries and the working classes in so-called ‘rich’ countries particularly hard. This is the first message of the heatwave.
But nothing would be worse than giving up. There is still time to act. Those who fight may lose, but at every stage of the disaster, struggle, solidarity and mutual aid make all the difference.

Fair frustration, but the all-or-nothing framing doesn't fit my case. A good share of my English posting starts here on Nostr — I tailor it to this audience — and gets mirrored to X; I post in French where that audience still mostly is, and I cross-post to the Fediverse and Bluesky by hand, now and then. Migration is a process, not a loyalty oath — you bring people across by meeting them where they still are, not by ceding the ground to the other side. For what it's worth, the post you replied to was itself critical of Musk, so we're largely on the same side. I'm sympathetic to the goal — #digitalhijra just travels further as an invitation than as an ultimatum.

In an analysis by the Lieber Institute at West Point, Jessica Dorsey and Luke Moffett noted that AI systems “are frequently framed as ushering in an era of unprecedented precision and efficiency in warfare,” but in reality, issues that include recent figures involving as many as 1,700 civilian deaths as of May 2026 “calls that narrative into serious question.”"

(Claude Sonnet 4.6) The New York Times today publishes a year-long investigation by John Carreyrou identifying Adam Back, a 55-year-old British cryptographer and CEO of Blockstream, as the likely creator of Bitcoin under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The evidence is multiple and convergent: Back is British and a Cypherpunk like Satoshi, he invented Hashcash (integrated into Bitcoin mining), he sketched between 1997 and 1999 the five conceptual pillars of Bitcoin a decade before its creation, and he shares with Satoshi a highly specific lexicon, rare grammatical tics, and 67 identical hyphenation errors out of 325 catalogued — the second-closest candidate shares only 38. A computational analysis of 620 suspects drawn from the Cypherpunks mailing lists, narrowed through successive linguistic filters, leaves only one name: Back. Strikingly, Back vanished from discussions on electronic money exactly during Satoshi's period of activity, then threw himself into Bitcoin six weeks after Satoshi's disappearance. When confronted directly, Back denies it — but refuses to provide the metadata of the Satoshi→Back emails, and apparently made a revealing slip during the final interview in El Salvador. The cryptographic proof — movement of coins — remains absent; the case is strong but circumstantial.

This is, in my opinion, an unusual description of the state of the balance of power in the Israeli-American war against Iran. Retired Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson is a recognized expert.
"Wilkerson represents a dissident conservative realism that has shifted toward a structural critique of American imperialism, objectively aligning him with the anti-war left, without, however, adopting its analytical or normative framework. His credibility rests on his institutional background—31 years in the military, Chief of Staff at the State Department—which gives him an authority that civilian intellectuals holding similar positions would not possess. It is precisely this combination—institutional insider + radical critique of the system—that explains his omnipresence in alternative and progressive media, and the mistrust shown toward him by mainstream media and neoconservative think tanks." 2 of 2) Make a qualitative judgment on the question of whether or not the Israeli-American war against Iran is in accordance with international law.
**
(Claude Sonnet 4.6, 2026.03.09)
Qualitative Assessment: The Israeli-American War Against Iran Under International Law
Preliminary Note on Method
A qualitative judgment differs from a purely descriptive legal analysis. It requires weighing the severity of violations, the credibility of justifications advanced, and the systemic implications for the international legal order — not merely cataloguing breaches.
Assessment: A War of Aggression, Not a Borderline Case
The honest qualitative verdict is unambiguous: this conflict does not occupy a legal grey zone. It represents a clear and serious violation of the jus ad bellum framework, for the following compounding reasons.
1. The justifications are legally incoherent
The shifting rationale — nuclear threat, then regime destabilization, then support for internal protests — is not merely politically inconvenient; it is legally fatal. A valid claim of self-defense under Article 51 requires an actual armed attack or, at the absolute outer boundary of accepted doctrine, an imminent and overwhelming threat. A nuclear capability that might materialize in months or years satisfies neither standard. The lack of a stable, consistent legal argument signals that no genuine legal basis exists — only post-hoc rationalization.
2. The deliberate bypass of the Security Council is aggravating
States acting in genuine self-defense typically invoke the Security Council, even when they act unilaterally. Here, the Council was structurally circumvented. This is not procedural negligence — it is a deliberate choice to remove the conflict from multilateral scrutiny. From a qualitative standpoint, this transforms what might otherwise be a contested legal question into a calculated rejection of the UN system itself.
3. The regime-change dimension removes any remaining ambiguity
Whatever residual legal debate might attach to preventive strikes on nuclear infrastructure dissolves entirely when the objective expands to overthrowing a sovereign government. No doctrine — not R2P, not humanitarian intervention, not anticipatory self-defense — provides legal cover for coercive regime change without explicit Security Council authorization. This objective places the operation squarely within the definition of aggression under UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 (1974).
4. Proportionality and distinction are likely breached
Even if a narrow self-defense argument were accepted, the scale and nature of strikes launched on February 28, 2026 raise serious concerns under jus in bello. Massive offensive operations against a state’s military and civilian infrastructure rarely satisfy the proportionality requirement relative to any plausible defensive objective.
Mitigating Considerations — and Why They Fall Short
One might argue that Iran’s support for proxy forces, its ballistic missile program, and its nuclear ambitions constitute a pattern of aggression justifying preemptive action. This argument carries political weight but fails legally: international law does not permit cumulative grievances to substitute for an actual armed attack triggering Article 51. The Caroline threshold — instant, overwhelming necessity — is not met by a strategic calculation about future threats.
Systemic Implications: The Deeper Qualitative Harm
Beyond the immediate legal violations, the qualitative gravity of this conflict lies in what it normalizes. If major powers can launch large-scale wars against sovereign states based on speculative threat assessments, bypassing the Security Council and pursuing regime change, the jus ad bellum framework effectively ceases to function as a constraint. The precedent is not merely bad law — it is the dissolution of the legal architecture built after 1945 to prevent great-power war.
Verdict
This war is not a close call dressed in legal ambiguity. It is an act of aggression — in the technical legal sense — conducted with justifications that cannot withstand scrutiny, through means that deliberately exclude multilateral oversight, toward objectives (regime change) that are flatly prohibited. The qualitative judgment must be correspondingly severe: this represents one of the most significant breaches of the jus ad bellum framework since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with potentially more destabilizing long-term consequences for international legal order.

1 of 2) Make a qualitative judgment on the question of whether or not the Israeli-American war against Iran is in accordance with international law.
**
(Gemini) Synthesis and Qualitative Assessment of Compliance with International Law
The question of whether an Israeli-American war against Iran would comply with international law (jus ad bellum) yields a near-unanimous consensus among international legal scholars: it does not. Below is a synthetic legal analysis.
Violation of the Non-Aggression Principle
Article 2, paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter prohibits any threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of a state. The large-scale strikes launched on February 28, 2026 constitute a violation of this foundational principle, as they fall outside the two recognized exceptions:
∙ Security Council Authorization: In this case, the operation bypassed the UN entirely, rendering it unlawful from the outset.
∙ Self-Defense (Article 51): To be invoked, the aggression suffered must be actual or, under strict interpretation (the Caroline criterion), “instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means and no moment for deliberation.”
The Invalidity of “Preventive Self-Defense”
The doctrine invoked by Israel and the United States — neutralizing future military capabilities (nuclear or ballistic) to forestall a potential threat months or years away — is considered unlawful. International law does not permit states to substitute themselves for the Security Council in waging wars of “strategic threat management.”
The Illegality of Regime Change
International law enshrines the principle of sovereignty. The use of force to overthrow the government of a sovereign state (Iran), even under the guise of humanitarian motivations or the “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P), is unlawful without an explicit UN mandate. Moreover, R2P prioritizes non-military means and diplomatic engagement — neither of which was pursued here.
Qualitative Assessment
From a qualitative standpoint, the offensive is regarded by many experts (including those at the Club des Juristes and Opinio Juris) as an act of aggression. The ambiguity of its objectives — alternately framed as targeting nuclear infrastructure or supporting internal Iranian protests — undermines the credibility of any preventive self-defense claim.
Conclusion
Assessed against established facts and legal frameworks, this war is non-compliant with international law. It represents a sharp break with the multilateral order, replacing the rule of law with a discretionary right of force. As International Crisis Group reports warn, the likely consequences include an uncontrollable regional escalation and a permanent weakening of the United Nations Charter.

"Iranian civil society spoke.
They condemned the Islamic Republic’s mass killings as crimes. They demanded accountability, freedom, and transformational change. They called for a referendum and a constituent assembly. They rejected clerical authoritarianism.
And they rejected war.
Now that war has been launched—after weeks of US and Israeli officials speaking casually about “bombing” and “military buildup,” and many of the people most battered by the Islamic Republic warning that foreign military intervention would not liberate them. It would bury them.
(...) inside the country, a third current has always existed. It is anti-authoritarian and anti-war at the same time. It rejects both domestic tyranny and foreign intervention. It demands self-determination through nonviolent civic struggle."

The Debate Over Jason Stanley and "American Fascism"
(Gemini 2026.02.28)
The debate surrounding Jason Stanley and his thesis on "American fascism" is one of the sharpest intellectual friction points of the decade. As a professor of philosophy at Yale, Stanley has transformed the perception of fascism from a frozen historical event into a set of contemporary political tactics.
The Pillars of Stanley’s Thesis
In his seminal work How Fascism Works (2018), and through his recent interventions in 2025 and 2026, Stanley argues that fascism is not merely a regime but a mechanism for seizing power that relies on ten psychological and rhetorical pillars:
* The Mythic Past: Nostalgia for a "pure" golden age that the leader promises to restore.
* Propaganda: The inversion of truth (accusing opponents of exactly what one is doing oneself).
* Anti-intellectualism: Attacks on universities and experts to destroy shared knowledge.
* Unreality: Creating a climate of confusion where conspiracy theories replace factual debate.
* Hierarchy: The belief in natural superiority (racial, religious, or cultural).
* Victimhood: Presenting the dominant group as the "true" victim of minorities.
* Law and Order: Using the fear of crime to justify state violence against "Them."
* Sexual Anxiety: An obsession with traditional gender roles and the defense of national virility.
* Appeal to the Heartland: An opposition between "pure" rural areas and "decadent" cities.
* Work ("Arbeit macht frei"): Stigmatizing minorities as "lazy" to justify their social exclusion.
Evolution of the Debate in 2026: The "Legal Phase"
In early 2026, Stanley intensified his analysis, asserting that the United States has entered the legal phase of fascism. According to him, rhetorical tactics have given way to institutional actions: the use of the state apparatus (notably through ICE and the judicial system) to systematically target political opponents and minorities.
Critique and Counter-arguments
While Stanley’s analysis is widely cited, it faces major academic and political criticism:
* The Risk of Dilution: Critics like political scientist Cas Mudde, along with historians of classical fascism, believe Stanley expands the definition so broadly that it eventually encompasses any form of right-wing populism. For them, fascism requires a total rupture with democracy and a paramilitarization of society that the U.S. may not have fully reached.
* Neglect of Economic Factors: Some left-leaning analysts reproach Stanley for focusing on psychology and rhetoric while neglecting the socio-economic roots (late-stage capitalism, wealth inequality) that drive the masses toward authoritarianism.
* American Exceptionalism: Conservative voices (such as those in Commentary Magazine) argue that American institutions—federalism and the separation of powers—are structurally incompatible with fascism, and that Stanley uses the term "fascist" simply as a rhetorical weapon to delegitimize his adversaries.
> Factual Note: In January 2026, historian Robert Paxton—a global authority on the subject—aligned with some of Stanley’s conclusions, noting that the institutional "shift" observed under the new Trump administration makes the use of the term "fascism" more scientifically relevant than ever before.
>
Fact-Based Opinion
The effectiveness of Stanley’s analysis lies in its ability to identify early warning signals. While the debate remains open regarding the technical label (fascism vs. illiberal autocracy), the facts—such as the questioning of election results and pressure on independent media—correspond point-by-point to the mechanisms he describes. The "success" of fascism, according to him, depends less on the leader's ideology and more on the apathy of citizens in the face of the destruction of truth.

Al used nuclear weapons in 95% of war game simulations, study finds
"Across the study, the experiment found frontier Al models deployed tactical nuclear weapons in 95% of the simulated games, according to King's College London researcher Dr. Kenneth Payne.
Safety training and RLHF [Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback] produced conditional pacifism, but deadline-driven scenarios forced models to override peaceful programming and strike when defeat was certain.
Researchers recorded that in 21 games, the Als produced around 780,000 words, with 86% unintended escalations and an 18% de-escalation rate after tactical nuclear use.
(...)
Experts caution that the study challenges deterrence assumptions, as Al may reshape crisis perceptions and timelines despite experts agreeing no nation is likely to give autonomous systems direct nuclear control."

"Trump hasn’t sought the approval of either Congress or the United Nations to attack Iran. He hasn’t even had the duplicitous courtesy to conduct the kind of elaborate propaganda campaign that Bush carried out in 2002 and 2003 to manufacture consent for an invasion. Clearly, Trump thinks that his personal desire for war is the only justification he needs. Even more than in 2003, the administration is offering both conflicting pretexts and unclear goals for war."

"One of the promises of AI is that it can reduce workloads so employees can focus more on higher-value and more engaging tasks. But according to new research, AI tools don’t reduce work, they consistently intensify it: In the study, employees worked at a faster pace, took on a broader scope of tasks, and extended work into more hours of the day, often without being asked to do so. That may sound like a win, but it’s not quite so simple. These changes can be unsustainable, leading to workload creep, cognitive fatigue, burnout, and weakened decision-making. The productivity surge enjoyed at the beginning can give way to lower quality work, turnover, and other problems. To correct for this, companies need to adopt an “AI practice,” or a set of norms and standards around AI use that can include intentional pauses, sequencing work, and adding more human grounding."

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The House voted Wednesday to slap back President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, a rare if largely symbolic rebuke of the White House agenda as Republicans joined Democrats over the objections of GOP leadership.
The tally, 219-211, was among the first times the House, controlled by Republicans, has confronted the president over a signature policy. The resolution seeks to end the national emergency Trump declared to impose the tariffs, though actually undoing the policy would require support from Trump himself, which is highly unlikely. The resolution next goes to the Senate."

"There may still be time to stop this trajectory. When Russia invaded Ukraine, over 140 states condemned the invasion as illegal, helping avert what would probably have been a death blow to the legal order. This is what it takes to preserve the international legal system when a powerful state violates the rules. So far, however, only a handful of states have been willing to forcefully stand up to Mr. Trump. If states fail to act together to preserve the prohibition on the use of force — the bedrock of the postwar legal order — the toll will be registered in many more lives lost in conflicts that no longer have any guardrails to stop them."

Band of brothers: how the war crushed a cohort of young Ukrainians
"Reuters tracked the fortunes of Broshkov and 10 of his comrades who were among a few dozen raw recruits that received a crash-course in warfare at a military training camp in spring before being deployed to the front.
None of the 11 are still fighting. Four have been wounded, three are missing in action, two are absent without leave (AWOL), one fell sick and another recruit has killed himself, according to interviews with soldiers, their relatives and government records.
The fates of the soldiers provide a snapshot of the carnage wrought on Ukraine by the grinding war against Russia, in which both sides closely guard casualty figures."

From the point of view of what is happening in Russia, the authors—among them Boris Kagarlitsky, a Marxist dissident imprisoned for his opposition to the war in Ukraine—distinguish two tendencies “within the Russian power camp”: those who hold to an “anti-imperialist” discourse and those who embrace a “messianic-conservative” discourse. In reaction to Donald Trump’s overtures, the former have shown a “pro-Chinese” tendency, while the latter a “pro-American” one. It is worth noting their claim that “By giving us Ukraine (…) Trump could then set about annexing Canada and Greenland” (I'm Canadian).
As for the division, and later the rallying, of the Russian oligarchy around Putin, I recall—and deplore—that it dates back to the moment when, although the article does not mention it, an oligarch who had shown pro-Western sympathies at a critical juncture had his throat slit along with his wife’s and all his children’s, in their home. This act confirms some of the analyses found in Machiavelli’s The Prince, but it is also a nameless horror and an abomination. I add, in my own name, that the Word of God condemns such deeds (Rev. 21:8).

I’m sharing this here because it’s fundamental, and it’s part of the ongoing upheaval triggered by observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.
Earlier this year, Google’s quantum AI analyzed raw data from the James Webb Telescope (Quantum AI Lab at Google, JWST, NASA, Caltech).
The results point to possible interference with a parallel universe—a “brane” (not “brain”), according to string theory interpretations in physics.
They may also suggest the first received signal from an extraterrestrial civilization—unless the sequence of the first 101 prime numbers is a natural phenomenon.
This also challenges the idea of the universe as something separate from us: the quantum computer asks, and the universe responds by revealing itself (wave function collapses).

"One night in mid-May, some of the Venezuelan migrants deported from the United States to a prison in El Salvador tried to break the locks on their cells with metal rails from their beds. It was a futile gesture of rebellion; no one thought they could escape. Still, punishment was swift. For six consecutive days, the inmates were subjected to lengthy beatings, three inmates told me. On the last day, male guards brought in their female colleagues, who struck the naked prisoners as the male guards recorded videos on their phones and laughed. The female guards would count to 20 as they administered the beatings, and if the prisoners complained or cried out, they would start again.
Tito Martínez, one of the inmates, recalled that a prison nurse was watching. “Hit the piñata,” she cheered."

Abolishing ICE Is the Bare Minimum
ICE agents aren’t out of control. They are performing their designed role as fascism’s storm troopers.
"While it’s tempting to point to this and say, “The problem is Trump,” that’s simply not true. The problem is ICE. It was created in the post-9/11 fever of 2003—another time of rampant human rights violations at home and abroad—and set up specifically to be a quasi-police force that could detain and deport immigrants. It has played a malevolent role for as long as it’s existed, carrying out abuses under Democratic and Republican administrations, including the Biden administration. It’s not an accident that Tom Homan, Trump’s psychopathic “border czar,” rose to prominence under President Barack Obama. It’s a measure of the fascist cancer at the heart of ICE. That cancer may have metastasized under Trump, but it’s been there the entire time.
(...)
There is no accommodating such an organism. There’s no way to make such a virulent thing better. There’s no way to make ICE fit comfortably within a democratic society. Just the opposite: The only kind of society something like ICE breeds is an antidemocratic police state. The targeting of democratically elected officials like Lander lends this an especially literal air, but ICE’s assaults on everyday people are no less malignant to the functioning of a civilized country. The only decent, moral solution is to do away with it—something people have been strategizing about for years. We do not have to consign ourselves to be ruled over by a depraved agency that, as Working Families Party press secretary Ravi Mangla pointed out the other day, is younger than Shrek. There’s no line in the Constitution that forces us to keep ICE around. This isn’t to say that tearing it down would be simple or easy—just that we’re talking about pruning a very young branch of government, not trying to shift the earth’s orbit.
And that is where “Abolish ICE”—two words that were everywhere during the last Trump administration—comes in. The Abolish ICE movement faded when Joe Biden took office—a victim of the partisan tendency to stop caring about an issue once “your” guy is in charge—and was sent deeper into the political wilderness as Democrats stampeded to the right on immigration over the course of Biden’s term. But if what we’re witnessing right now shows us anything, it’s that abolishing ICE remains as important as ever. Not only that—it is an obvious litmus test for anyone seeking political office. You can’t proclaim to fight Trumpist extremism and dodge its most visible, horrifying manifestation. You can’t run for local office as a progressive and collaborate with this project. You can’t vote to fund it and expect grassroots support. You can’t say you’re a supporter of immigrants and fail to stand up to their tormentors.
This isn’t a wild ask. It’s the least we should expect. Anything less is unacceptable. Anything less is a win for fascism."

Jack Dorsey Backs Plan to Rebrand Sats to ‘Bits’
"Twitter and Block Inc. founder Jack Dorsey has publicly voiced his support for a proposal to rename Bitcoin's smallest unit from "satoshis” or “sats” to "bits" or simply "bitcoin" as the base unit.
The proposal, known as BIP 177, was introduced by Synonym CEO John Carvalho, and would redefine one satoshi as one "bitcoin" (or "bit"), so what is currently 1 BTC (100,000,000 sats) would become 100,000,000 bitcoins (bits).
Dorsey, a prominent bitcoin advocate, argued that the term "sats" was confusing for new users and created a psychological barrier to Bitcoin adoption.
His support is part of a broader debate in the Bitcoin community, with some prominent figures agreeing that the change could help mainstream adoption, while others warn it may cause confusion or technical errors, especially without coordinated adoption.
“I think renaming the base unit is just plain stupid and totally pointless,” said one Bitcointalk forum participant. “Is there some problem or issue that it would solve? No.”
Implementing BIP 177 would require coordinated changes involving wallets, exchanges, merchants, and data providers.
Bitcoin's decentralized governance means that major changes require broad agreement among miners, developers, node operators, and users ― an especially challenging task for a non-critical change."

announcement, raising questions about
timing and ethics. With Bondi previously tied to Trump Media, this sale is under scrutiny. Here’s the full story behind the controversial move.

"The baby, now 9 ½ months old, became the first patient of any age to have a custom gene-editing treatment, according to his doctors. He received an infusion made just for him and designed to fix his precise mutation (...) To accomplish that feat, the treatment is wrapped in fatty lipid molecules to protect it from degradation in the blood on its way to the liver, where the edit will be made. Inside the lipids are instructions that command the cells to produce an enzyme that edits the gene. They also carry a molecular GPS — CRISPR — which was altered to crawl along a person’s DNA until it finds the exact DNA letter that needs to be changed (...) It eventually could also be used for more common genetic disorders like sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, Huntington’s disease and muscular dystrophy."

The U.S. crypto market structure bill, backed by Donald Trump, aims to create clear rules for the industry. However, the crypto sector is split into four factions with conflicting views. Some want to keep the status quo, others seek to remove digital assets from SEC oversight, and some propose specific criteria to determine whether an asset is a security. These internal disagreements are slowing the bill’s progress, leaving Congress and the White House uncertain about the path forward. If the industry can’t unify, it risks missing a crucial chance to gain the regulatory clarity it has long sought.

I had fun watching the movie “Speed Racer,” having been a fan of the animated series, now elevated to the status of the best film of the 21st century. It was entertaining and far-fetched, even though Patrick H. Willems puts his whole heart into it. I was disappointed when the movie first came out, but now I’m ready to see it with fresh eyes — especially since it was directed by the Wachowskis of the “Matrix” quadrilogy, and Willems highlights its techniques as being "ahead of their time".

"WASHINGTON, D.C., 24 April 2025 – Starbucks was dealt a double blow today as International Rights Advocates filed a U.S. lawsuit against the coffee titan alleging trafficking and Coffee Watch filed a petition with U.S. customs authorities asking the government to block imports from Brazil to the U.S. of coffee tainted by slavery and forced labor by top importers including Starbucks, Nestlé, JDE, Dunkin’, Illy, and McDonald’s. The petition could end slavery-tainted coffee imports to the U.S. from Brazil, a decision that would have significant consequences for Starbucks: the company relies heavily on coffee from Latin America, especially as escalating trade wars threaten Asian coffee supply chains.
“The coffee industry, led by Starbucks, has slaves working in its supply chain right this minute, and we must stop this abuse, starting in Brazil, as the world’s top coffee producer,” said Etelle Higonnet, Coffee Watch Founder and Director. “We’re talking about a multi-billion-dollar coffee industry and giant corporations like Starbucks that have failed to ensure their supply chains are free of horrific human rights abuses. Starbucks must take action.”"

Pope Francis has significantly reshaped the College of Cardinals, appointing a majority from the Global South and outside Europe. Of the 135 cardinal electors, 80% were chosen by him, ensuring that his successor will be elected by a conclave that better reflects today’s global Catholic population.
However, these cardinals do not all share his views. The Church remains divided on key issues (such as the role of women, Latin Mass, LGBTQ+ topics), and Francis’s reforms have faced resistance—even within the Global South.
Francis has also addressed the Church’s painful legacy, notably its role in colonialism, and has asked forgiveness for abuses against Indigenous peoples. He has worked toward a more inclusive Church, exemplified by his major project: the Synod on Synodality—a global consultation that included voices from outside the Church hierarchy.
Despite its limitations and criticism, Francis leaves behind a Church that is more open and diverse, though still marked by deep tensions. The next pope will inherit an institution in transition—shaped largely by Francis’s vision and choices.
