Had to buy a new SSD a month or two ago and it cost about twice what it would have a year ago.

All that may be true, but Ken White doesn't post on Mastodon anymore either, and cited the constant "HOA" scolding as his reason for leaving. He's got a point.
I like Mastodon. I'm using Mastodon right now. But for all that it's decentralized, Mastodon's got its own cultural problems that put people off. Including Ken White.
Hell, even now I'm half-expecting some reply-guy to scold me for saying "Mastodon" when they think I should have said "Fedi".

We're watching TV, circa 1990. I'm about 7 and my brother about 4. There's coverage of Desert Storm.
Brother asks dad why we're at war.
Dad says, "Well, son, you see those tanks and planes? Those are like the president's toys. You like to play with your toys, right? Well, so does he. If you had toys like that you'd want to play with them too."
It stuck with me.

I once heard Cory Doctorow use the analogy (paraphrasing from memory), "There's a difference between privacy and secrecy. What I'm doing in the bathroom stall isn't a secret, but it's private. That's why the door is closed."

Anthropic thinks OpenAI is an Asimov problem ("a robot must never harm a human being"), but they're actually an Adams problem ("a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes"). @npub1esh…ggsa

Yeah, that's some really terrible framing.
These aren't "AI critics" or "AI skeptics" who've "taken a safety-conscious view of AI development" any more than the Proud Boys are boys who are proud.
They don't object to generative AI because of its environmental or economic impact, its threat to creative fields, its role in poisoning search engines and promoting misinformation. They object to it because they think Terminator 2 is a documentary and OpenAI is going to create Skynet.

Trump ending up in a bunker would be a little on the nose, but then, so is demolishing the White House.

Past 25 years? Probably Andy Serkis as Gollum. But these are good choices too.
Most affecting film I've seen in the past 25 years was Pan's Labyrinth, but as wonderful as the performances were I'd lay that more at the feet of design and direction.

I think its biggest mistake was to try to fit a thousand-year timeline and a cast of dozens into a two hour movie. I think it could have worked as a TV series, with more time to breathe.
Sorry to hear how rough the reaction was on the cast, though. The film's problems weren't their fault. @npub1ucs…khzn [@Variety](https://flipboard.com/@Variety )

There's a format that's especially well-suited to ebooks.
I snagged Star Trek Lower Decks: Warp Your Own Way in a Humble Bundle recently and was happy to see that all the "turn to page N" prompts were links to the appropriate page. [@AtlasObscura](https://flipboard.com/@AtlasObscura ) @npub1ny7…uv57

I'm not sure what you mean by enforcing their licenses? They can only enforce their licenses on works they own; they don't have any right to enforce anyone else's copyrights, even if they wrote the license the work is published under.

Well, I mean, maybe let's wait until it has a few more games before we go throwing around superlatives like that.

I thought that was a picture of Frank Zappa on the right for a second there.
He actually pitched an idea for a music streaming service back in the '80s—he envisioned a dialup modem connected to a cassette recorder. An idea a bit ahead of its time.
If he were with us today, I expect he'd appreciate the ready availability of every kind of music but take as dim a view of the industry and popular audience tastes as ever.

I won't say they've lost our business *permanently*; I see the point of a boycott as pressure to get a company to change its behavior. If they do, we'll be willing to go back.
But to each their own. You're certainly not under any obligation to shop there for any reason.

Do you have it pulled up in your own instance?
I found his profile by putting https://mastodon.satoshishop.de/@mk into the "Search or paste URL" bar in the top left of the web interface on my own instance, and was able to block the domain once I had his profile up.
(This should really be easier; they should add a way to just manually type in a domain to block on your "Blocked Domains" page.)

Lauren, when a paper calls for a candidate to resign following a poor debate performance but does not call for his opponent to resign following 34 felony convictions, it's not a messenger. It's an advocate. For the felon.
