Wandering Star

To be sure... the r-word is on its way to being defanged of any literal meaning and will one day join the ranks of other generic insults. I am 98% certain of it. But we're not there yet and you shouldn't use it.

I am immensely suspicious of anyone who wouldn't choose $100 million dollars, plus $900 of good charity and foundation work. $1 million dollars lets you retire young, $10 million gives you unimaginable freedom... I imagine $100 million is probably better. But a billion? What could I possibly do with a billion?

He was a revolutionary figure who ultimately assumed autocratic control of his country for decades and persecuted homosexuals, despite queer folk participating in the revolution? And how he serves as a warning that non-democratic options can have dangerous consequences even with a sincere, effective, and largely good-enough leader at the spearhead of the revolution?

The President isn't supposed to have this power. Obviously our form of government is outdated in some respects, but this has as much to do with norms and culture as it does with formal infrastructure. There is no form of democracy which will protect you from 35% of the population thinking it's okay to disappear people.

Everything is just setting things up for next time. There are no guarantees. The choice is between democratic action, or no-democratic action. The latter can be considerably messier.

I'm not any kind of orthodoxist... my futurist economic plan on the back of a napkin would be a planned economy for housing, medicine, energy and a certain quantity of food staples; a democratic socialist apparatus governing security, economic planning, infrastructure, state diplomatic functions; and wild anarchy including markets and/or communes as desired to fulfill various human desires.
