We had our friends Kyler and Ryan over last night to celebrate Ky's first year alcohol free. We made egpllant curry and vegan cookies for Ryan, and I keep fired up the grill for the carnivores. Ky is the fellow Ryan and I helped out last year get a tent and campground site for a while until the city could help him find a permanent home and a place to work. He posted up online that he had become homeless, so we helped out as much as possible.
Ky let me know that things haven't been easy. He lost cartilage in his knee, so he buckled over at work. He said he refused compensation because this was a long term issue for him. For that, his job got him off the floor and onto the phones, and now he's eligible for a raise. He said he met a friend who was also struggling to quit, but they can now call him to get talked out of it if they feel the urge.
I told him I was so proud, and this was something definitely worth celebrating. I let him know that my daughter had an extremely rough week, but the thought never even occurred to me to have a drink. So, hopefully it will be the same for them after enough time.
I said I hope he didn't mind that I shared his story online. His face lit up. I let him know there were a lot of people on here that are cheering him on, and I hope his story will inspire others like it does me. He was so, so happy. He said that was exactly what he needed to hear.
This sort of thing is so great. Ryan had been lonely, let down by people so much. This experience has been such a boost for all of us, and has made me proud of the city I live in. It's nice to know there are good people who help out a stranger in need. It's nice to know that in kind, they're helping out others. And I hope this reaches anybody out there that might need to hear it.

I gotta say, this whole AI craze is really making me question how I feel about Data being on the Enterprise now.

2026-08-25 12:42:04 GMT

I have received a lot of emails and text messages in my life. I used to do IT support.
Serious question here: If people don't know how to spell and use proper grammar, how in the hell are they able to use AI?

It feels weird to complain about entertainment at this point in time, but I'm actually upset with the way this show is handling beloved characters, and I just have to get this off my chest.
Conceptually, "Lanterns" is a good show. I'm fully behind the idea of taking The Green Lantern, and telling that story like you would a True Detective crime story. That's perfect.
Except, if you're going to do that, then you should probably understand the characters instead of shoehorning them into something entirely different.
It's like they went into some boardroom meeting and asked, "So, who are these 'Green Lanters' anyway?" And someone said, "Well Hal Jordan was chosen to be the Earth's and the galaxy's protector because he's a fearless test pilot. He's not afraid to take risks, and he doesn't care what people think about him, as long as there's peace in his sector. And John Stewart is his successor. He's a lot cooler, because he can do more with the ring. They're a lot alike, because they're both in the military, and John is also fearless."
And that's all the information they got, and they ran with that, missing all the nuances and important details. The show states clearly that what makes a Lanters is having no fear. Being fearless doesn't make a good cop. It makes a cop careless and dangerous. If they wanted to make a show about a hero without fear, that's for Daredevil, not The Green Lantern.
Hal Jordan was chosen, because of his conviction, because in his heart, he deeply felt that doing the right thing is better than being afraid of the consequences. He's cocky, self-assured, and takes risks that avoid bureaucracy, not because he never faces any consequences, and not because he doesn't experience fear. It's because fear doesn't get in his way. An alien died in his arms, and he was picked out of all the people on the planet, because of his conviction, and quick thinking.
John Stewart was an architect. He served in the military as a sniper in some iterations, but he always studied architecture. He designed and built things. Being an architect, he had the creative mind to fabricate objects that Hal Jordan could never imagine. This does not translate into a fearless sniper that follows orders, does what he's told, keeps his head down and mouth shut, doesn't drink, takes his coffee decaf, is a vegan, and puts up with too much bullshit, waiting patiently for his turn. It's too much, and none of it makes any sense.
Also, the first episode shows that Hal Jordan dies. I guess we were supposed to be surprised by this. I wasn't. I didn't care. Wouldn't it have been cool if Hal died in his John's arms, recalling The Green Lantern origin story?
There's no chance that a person who has been shot at by his own father, who has been trained to murder other people with a sniper rifle, who does not ever experience fear, would make a good intergalactic peacekeeper. It makes no sense why a person like that would have any ethics, morals, or creativity. It makes no sense why anyone would ever appreciate Hal Jordan. John says he respects him, but why? He's just a famous and powerful douchebag putting him through hell out of contempt and jealousy.
Cocky and self-assured doesn't equate to putting people's lives in danger, and constantly being a giant asshole to everyone, and then facing zero consequences.. for no reason. It'd be one thing if John recognized it as PTSD, but that probably wouldn't be "cool" for these writers.
If this were a spin-off of True Detective with some sci-fi elements, I'd love this. It wouldn't bother me so much that the jokes don't land, the dialogue is clunky, and none of the behaviors make much sense. It'd be a fun crime show, if it didn't shit all over the history of the characters that the show is supposed to be about.
I'm sick of seeing Superhero shows being written by people who don't like superheroes. This is what they look up to? I guess their point is that you shouldn't look up to superheroes. I guess what they're trying to say is that heroes are just normal people, and I guess normal people are fucked up like this. I guess.
End of rant.

Update on Jagger and Bowie: The puppies continue to grow exponentially. World dominance is all but assured, given their size at only 5 months age. I shall continue to feed the creatures, providing their carnal desires, as their training continues. Victory shall be ours.

You might not be seeing this stuff online, but every time I go for a drive in my rural area in the U.S., there are crowds of protestors. I'm talking about small town farming communities, and they're getting a whole lot of support from the traffic passing by. Nobody likes what's happening here. At this point, I don't even think the most die hard followers like any of this.

Once upon a time, I was very active on MySpace and then Facebook. Then things got really shitty, so I quit and joined BlueSky.
I felt horrible, like the smallest bit of the code, unrecognized, shouting into the void for robots and scammers. But it a good place, right? And then they banned trans people while bringing in the authoritarians.
So, I thought all social media is bad, and I should try and get a website going where I could shout at the void on my own space.
I came across @nprofile…zlvh and started playing around with PeerTube. I saw @nprofile…kqgc talking about exciting things, connecting with real people, and rebuilding that good time I used to have being online.
It was exciting, but I wasn't sure. And then @nprofile…p0c4 came on, and I was blown away. My people! There they are!
I hope other people like me quit lurking quietly and join in. It's fantastic here on the #fediverse

I don't know about other filmmakers or content creators, but I have never seen a dime from YouTube. Even when I pushed out regular content filming live events, even when I had huge numbers of followers and views, the only thing I ever got from YouTube was a bunch of nasty comments.
But unless they use ad-block, every person watching my videos sees ads they don't want for things they don't want. Google is making bank off my work, and I just want people to see it.
If you're like me, consider switching to a reputable #PeerTube instance that federates like @nprofile…vcsr or @nprofile…7v70

Hi #fediverse I'm 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 - AKA 𝔇𝔞𝔯k𝔴𝔬𝔩𝔣
I'm a filmmaker, artist, and animator. I won 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐌𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐨's 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦 award for 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴: 𝘈 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘰𝘣 𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 in 2004. I also have a 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩-𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴-𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩-𝘬𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 kind of movie you can watch for free on 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐢 called 𝘓𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥: tubitv.com/movies/662559/left-for-dead
I worked in 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 and 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 for TV stations in New Mexico, where I also did sketch comedy and variety shows on public access, and hired background actors for shows and movies filmed there. I used to self-publish electronic music as 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐁, and my music got played on college radio and rave clubs in the '90s.
I founded 𝐌𝐞𝐠𝐚 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐬, making feature films, short films for the 𝟒𝟖 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥, music videos, and promotional videos for independent artists and small businesses. I make animated intros, logos, book trailers-- you name it.
I like to draw, write, and edit photos. Expect to see some artwork from me on here. :)
Nice to meet you! #introduction
