@nprofile…j05z @nprofile…wgz8 @nprofile…l4uj the "piss filter era" of gaming is much older though, e.g. I seem to remember that it started with this "gem" (it's not just the marketing material that's yellow, the entire game is)

Damn, @nprofile…7rg4 seriously nerd-sniped me to consider starting that home-region terrain rendering thingie that's been rolling around in my head for decades :D
E.g. I just checked what's available now for free, and there's 1x1m terrain data for download from the Saxon government. here's a random hill-shaded 2x2km tile (I just let claude cobble together a python+numpy script to 'hillshade' the data (because the tiff itself just comes out white in the macOS viewer):

@nprofile…7rg4 ...that made me check again what I can get for the region around my home town, and wow, 1 meter resolution heightmaps as 2x2 km tiles, and even the raw LIDAR point cloud data for all of Saxony, and all for free.
Last I checked (but that was probably 15 years ago), the best you could get was heightmap data with 30m resolution, or at best 10m for some areas.

@nprofile…vdqu the infuriating thing about vulkan barriers is that most of them are a no-op on most desktop GPUs (AFAIK) :/
FWIW in sokol-gfx I also have very conservative barriers, but I guess I'll just keep them for now.
A better solution would be to do some sort of 'time travel barriers', e.g. maintain two cmdbufs per sokol render pass, one only for barriers, the other only for render commands. In the sokol-gfx resource binding function, record the required barrier into the barrier cmdbuf... \

@nprofile…5x8e @nprofile…c3sc I had some success using Claude Opus for bug scanning, basically as fuzzy static analyzer (e.g. it finds wrong comments and messages). Plenty of non-bugs too though.
But on more complex cases (such as my home computer emulator code) it just got stuck in an endless 'reasoning loop', and I guess for large code bases that simply gets to expensive for hobbyists (currently I don't pay for my hobby usage, my employer does heh).

@nprofile…valu IME sRGB always has been a clusterfuck of buggy implementations and missing features, especially in GL drivers. I bet most games do the sRGB conversion before writing to the render target in shader, and also don't bother with sRGB textures but instead pre-convert in the asset pipeline.

Working on a new frame time jitter filter in sokol_app.h, and while at it, also add a new debug-visualization header 'sokol_app_imgui.h' (testing mainly in browsers because those are a worst-case scenario for measuring frame time because of limited time source precision (fallout from Spectre/Meltdown).

I merged a minimal PR which 'harmonizes' sokol_app.h mouse wheel event behaviour with GLFW (TL;DR: on Windows mouse wheel events were 4x too fast - for reasons lost in history sokol_app.h divided by 30 instead of the WHEEL_DELTA from windows.h (which is 120) - and that wrong scaling somehow also made it into the Emscripten backend.

Interesting, 2025 was actually the most active year in sokol development (it didn't really feel that way, but looking back there were 3 big updates: compute-shaders in spring, resource-views in summer, and the experimal Vulkan backend in winter - also a good number of easy-to-manage PRs, kudos to all contributors :)

Missing server-side-decoration in Gnome is essentially why sokol_app.h has no Wayland backend and instead relies on XWayland to draw the window decorations (at least that way it's consistent with the other windows).

2025-11-21 17:57:01 GMT

Lol, that "worst Cloudflare outage since 2019" a couple of days ago was because somebody put an .unwrap() into a Rust codebase? I have so many questions...
...tbf though, "let it crash" isn't bad for a backend-service, but the other half is that you better make damn sure that each crash-path is properly tested, especially that the service properly recovers - maybe they should have used Erlang instead ;)
https://blog.cloudflare.com/18-november-2025-outage/

2025-11-15 19:04:17 GMT

sokol-gfx Vulkan backend is close enough to the finish line to compare line counts (not including sokol_app.h setup and window system glue):
WebGPU: 2.1 kloc
D3D11: 2.3 kloc
Metal: 2.3 kloc
Vulkan: 3.1 kloc
OpenGL: 3.3 kloc
So the Vulkan backend is actually a bit smaller than the GL backend lol.
Some caveats:
D3D11 includes about 500 lines boilerplate for D3D11 C vs C++ API function wrappers.
GL includes about 200 lines for a Windows GL loader.
Vulkan has no GPU allocator.

@nprofile…fnpd instead of dual boot I opted for an external USB drive this time around - might also be useful for testing on different distros when I need to reproduce bugs. Only downside is that its too easy to accidentially disconnect the drive which will basically break the running system (never lost data because of this though, booting in 'safe mode' was enough for the recovery to kick in)

2025-10-20 09:49:46 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…fnpd I use Kubuntu on an Asus Zenbook 14 OLED laptop and so far it's the best 'Linux on a laptop' experience I had.
Downsides: since a couple of weeks I have the occasional complete freeze (need to check if the most recent Ubunutu releases fixed that), audio is hit and miss.
Upside is that it easily feels twice as fast for everything compared to Win11 on the same machine.
But also, Win11 isn't as terrible as I expected btw, just install OpenShell: https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu

2025-09-04 15:55:04 GMT

sokol-app + sokol-gfx 'hello triangle' native executable sizes on macOS:
Metal backend:
release: 0.15 MB
debug: 0.3 MB
WebGPU/Dawn backend:
release: 6.2 MB
debug: 51 MB
That's basically the price to pay for embedding an entire shader compiler (plus general code bloat and C vs C++ codebase).

2025-08-04 18:01:33 GMT

Not to toot my own horn too much, but I'm kinda happy that I just whipped up a new sokol sample with two (very trivial) compute shaders and a vertex- and fragment shader in like 15 minutes, and I didn't run into any "black screen moments" or had to use the Metal debugger, most oopsies were caught as (shader compiler) errors and I had one runtime error which was caught by the sokol-gfx validation layer with a clear message.
Of course I'm very familar with the API, but still :)

@nprofile…e2ev what else is CHANGELOG.md though ;) (FWIW I think a proper changelog - which doesn't simply replicate git commit messages - is very valuable, for instance I only look at the git history when trying to figure out why and since when something is broken, and even then I look at the actual changes and only rarely at the commit messages)

@nprofile…e2ev OTH, most people probably *shouldn't* study IMHO, it's probably a typical German PoV, but there need to be valid and rewarding carreer paths that don't require going to university (thankfully at least Germany still has those alternatives via its robust trade school system).
Also specifically for computer stuff: a more hands-on practical approach often makes more sense than spending too much time on abstract computer science topics. E.g. computing is mostly not computer science.
