12 August 2020, off-grid on the living room of my cabin in the wilderness of Humboldt, California.
My rooster waits for me to come outside so he can flog me... Cuz he's one mean assed motherfucker and never learns that Imma just punt him instead.
That is, if my favorite hen, who also waits for me everyday to follow me around and body block him. Yeah, she literally would kick his ass when he tried to attack me.

Halloween, 2017 (October 31st) - Humboldt, California.
Matching his and her costumes.
You can easily tell which one is which, lolz.
Literally, I was off bucking up logs earlier in the day with a chainsaw and peeled these natural bark costumes from some of them. You can't make this stuff up, but a sick imagination does help you see the potential to use them as Halloween costumes while they're still wrapped around the logs.

I'm not going to bite.
Nott after winter last year, which I thought was over at the end of February and then proved to be the most brutal for me and all my friends living off-grid in the mountains of Humboldt's wilderness... At least as far as winters go (snow up to my chest).
I hope you do indeed have an early spring, although I think they just checked with the groundhog earlier today, or maybe that's tomorrow?

Wow! I too would really love to have a digital copy of this compendium. Would it be possible for you to provide for me a non-DRM encoded .epub version of it? I promise not to copy and distribute it to others, it's just that on my principles, I cannot abide anything DRM. I guess that's one reason why I liked purchasing from O'Reilly for so long, and still like Smashwords. It's not an Amazon boycott or anything for me, just a DRM thing. I use Amazon, but even then (if it's books), I usually prefer to actually go down to a brick and mortar establishment to pick up my hard copies :) No worries if you can't, and it might be best for me to buy it on hard copy anyway :)

Yes! Where Western Avenue ends at the cliffs.
The area was taken over by Fort MacArthur (I think I spelled that right), and huge guns with barrels like 40' long were installed all over the hills. The resort was bulldozed so the landmark of the resort (which was famous in Japan) was no longer a navigational marker, and everyone there was relocated to internment camps.
About 25 or 30 years ago, we unsuccessfully petitioned the State of California to have the cove itself designated as an underwater park, but they granted us permission to mount a bronze plaque in about 15' of water near the hot water vents from the springs that used to naturally heat the huge salt water pool (not Olympic sized, but pretty big). There's a photo collection of the area...
in the 19th Century, trappers would load Sea Otter pelts onto ships bound for Boston (Richard Henry Dana - Four Years Before the Mast), later after the gold rush when that industry completely died out, first generation American Citizens decended from Japanese immigrants who once farmed the reefs for shellfish bought the property and built a posh resort. WWII changed the entire landscape below on the shore as well as the hills above.

Okay there's no plaque or anything commemorating this (no longer functioning) fountain, nor an explanation as to why this hundred year old relic laid on the rocks below was busted into about six pieces, until concerned citizens raised it from below, reassembled and plastered it.
This was the resort's fountain where the Japanese Olympic team stayed and trained during the 1932 Olympic games.
Some of us still endeavor to keep the memories of the inhabitants of #Issei cove alive.

Head South on Western avenue anywhere along the southern corridor of #Los_Angeles and at the very very end you'll arrive here at the cliffs of #White_Point.
It's also referred to as #Issei_Cove, in honor of the first generation #Japanese immigrants who first settled here, and farmed the reefs for scallops, abalone, and urchins.
It was a resort with a huge salt water pool and housed the #Japanese_Olympic_Team in 1932.
They were interred in WWII.

Collecting as many bucked logs as possible - two or three loads per day of sufficiently seasoned wood while there's still no snow.
First, you fell the trees, then you buck it all up as logs. Several months or a year later, you go back and collect those.
All of the logs are then 🪓 split, and then stacked on the porch and elsewhere.
Nice, dry, Doug Fir, Oak, and Madron for cooking and heating.

A couple of years back in Eureka with a lady friend who was showing me around on a cultural stroll.
This back alley mural is an homage to Eleanora Fagan, one of my great musical influences, and one of the most celebrated jazz singers of all time.
At the bottom of the frame you'll notice the two rails, the wooden cross ties long since buried beneath the asphalt of the alley. I stood wondering for a very long time why there was literally no clearance for passing trains.

April 20th, 2023 in the mountains of Humboldt again.
This is there beautiful Naya, during in repose with her legs crossed in front of her like a proper lady.
This is shortly before she started really slowing down and becoming arthritic and lethargic. And then she just stopped eating and began to wither away.
She would still take food from me to be polite, but just drop it into the ground.
As wolves do, one day she decided to wander off alone into the woods to die on her own without fanfare.

Valentine's Day breakfast, 2018.
My wood fired #Stanley_cooker stove and oven.
Everything is better when it's cooked in an #Iron_skillet.
I baked a few cakes in that oven, which is a real challenge - adjusting the type and amount of wood in the firebox as well as the redirect of the heat to the oven box.
It takes constant attention. The first cake, I had to cut out the center, which wasn't done, like a bundt cake.

Jake Edward Brown, AKA Thomas Tracy Burum, died in 2003.
He was 36 years old when he murdered Teri Lynn Hollis on Thanksgiving Day 1972.
He got away with #murder and wasn't identified until 11 September 2019.
Teri and I were the same age, 11 years old. she was my neighbor, abducted from my neighborhood, raped, strangled, and her body was discovered the next day, dumped on the rocks at the beach.
My parents put me on lockdown after that, and it has haunted me my entire life.

#Campground in #Fortuna California (Humboldt), my last stop before landing back in #SoCal, with 900 more miles to go 🌴
This socalled, "cabin", was only a few dollars more than one of their tent camping spots, and had an electric heater inside so it was warm and toasty, had #WiFi, less than 300' from the shoreline, and was just as comfy as a regular hotel room but ¼ the cost.

* This is the first photo of a series - I'm prolly going to try out "collections" and make this part of one. I still have a bad taste left in my mouth from the #gplus days when they launched collections, but I digress.
* The Piggy Opera was her first grade school play, and from an age of innocence that eventually evolves into some awareness on the childs part that I think most parents loathe - we always wish for them to remain the "Itty Bitty Baby" that we carried everywhere on one arm; and this was in the last months of when she was still light enough for me to carry her everywhere.

Ah... now that was enough wood for about three weeks.
Oak, Doug fir, and Madron, bucked and split and stacked up on my porch like a solid wooden brick, 7½' high x12' wide x 6' deep.
That's a lot of fucking fire #wood!
Everything I cooked and all of my heat came from that wood stack.

#Evacuation day - orders were actually issued two days beforehand but I was only alerted about an hour before taking this pic and others.
My truck is fire engine red, and as such it was almost invisible. You can see that inside my cabin the air is clear (through the window), while outside the air is the color of Satan.
The #August_Complex was swift and deadly, destroying most everything in its path.
I opened the chicken coop and bade them good luck & farewell forever

Only $99 - My dad bought one. I still have it. Nobody else on my block had one. He also bought me a Timex Sinclair computer when those first came out.
So I would have been about 11 years old. By comparison, my daughter had a supercomputer about the exact same size when she was 11.

I read that they evacuated everyone way out in #Salton_Sea yesterday, not that anyone can stand living there anymore, but does that mean it got filled up with water again?
I drove past it over twenty five years ago on my way to #Yuma and it stank like shit back then, lolz.

Labradoodles? Poodales?
I dunno if these are poodles crossed with labrador retrievers, some white, some chocolate labs, or Airedales.
The sight of 8 big dogs of this size just jumping into a tiny hatchback sedan (one in the front passenger seat) from a single command by their owner leaving the wholesale commercial grocery outlet in Arcata California.
Their level of obedience, organized discipline, from roaming the parking lot to this astounding shot - Priceless!

October 18th, 2020.
A month and a half after evacuations meter hours before everything was incinerated in the #August_Complex fires.
A #waxing_moon following the dissipation of smoke and other toxins that settled and lingered along the coastline of #Humboldt_Bay, where I made my new home for the next two years...
A #waxing_moon that signals #new_beginnings and emergence from tragedy.
New beginnings mean novel possibilities, and hopes of eventualities that did finally bring me home to #SuperSunnySouthernCalifornia in another two and a half years.
I can live without the #redwoods, and I can always visit, but not knowing I needed #sand, #surf, #seagulls, and #palm_trees 🌴 was a revelation, and a joyous realization.
