I sometimes realize, in the middle of a git rebase, that something is annoying and I want to fix it.
What I would usually do is make a commit then and there, let the rebase continue, and then later I'll have to remember that I want to do another rebase to move that commit to the proper place in the commit tree.
But what if your ongoing git rebase is something big, like run a check on each commit and push them as they're verified? I don't want that fix on my PR, and I don't want to skip the rest of the side-effects in this rebase and then start over.

When she sings it in all head voice, it's clear that she's an excellent vocalist. Maybe singing in high chest notes is new for her?
But she's previously known as an "EPA-dunk" singer, that's modern Swedish working-class party music, surely that must involve some coarser vocal qualities too? I'll check out her earlier works.

Ok, so apparently I've been a bit unfair to the Swedish song.
When I first heard it, I thought "this should be a banger, but why did they send someone who can't quite hold a note and is consistently the slightest bit flat the whole song?". It ruined the song for me.
The singer, Felicia, had a cold and a fever while performing. Two days ago she fainted during rehearsals, and in yesterday's grand rehearsal she reduced her participation to strictly her performance of the song. Even in the Melodifestivalen final back in February something was a bit off.
If you listen to her first performance, her high notes have better support and the whole song is much better.

Now I've read some takes on the upcoming movie and they're upset.
I don't have an emotional investment in any version of Supergirl. I've seen her as a side character in various media, and the CW one is just "a" Supergirl to me, I don't have a coherent idea of "the" Supergirl. I didn't read her comics.
Those that do have an image of "the" Supergirl (from the comics, I assume), worry that this one is going to be disrespectful to the character, based on hungover cameo Supergirl.

It shares some of the same problems as Discovery, mostly that it tries to do goofy quirky humor and is bad at it. Lower Decks did 10x more of it but did it 20x better and it worked.

I first heard "90125" on my elder brother's bedroom stereo 40 years ago, and it is so very 1983, but also so modern.
Some people rail against how modern K-Pop albums are overproduced with 200 layers of harmonics, but I love that shit. And 90125 stands up to that, it is so dense, so precise, the voices such precision instruments, it's unlike anything else from that era.
And then you listen to 9012Live. How did they do those songs live?! The mind boggles.

2026-04-09 05:51:16 GMT

I don't quite know how to handle what an amazing album "90125" is.
I can go for years not listening to it, and then it pops into my mind, I listen to it and it's like, why do I listen to other music, this is such a masterpiece. This is my favorite song! No, this is! Wait, that's on here too?!?
If you took almost any song on this album and put it on another *very good album* by any artist, it would be the best song on that album, really stand out. The harmonics, the rhythm, the production ... out of this world.

@nprofile…3yee My name came up in a non-public subthread.
A lot of what I would have to say has been documented in the "people's history" type articles written about a decade back by Robek and Strypey, about the early, pre-Masto Fediverse from a user and social perspective, but I could be helpful with clarifications. (I'll try to locate those articles)
Like many others have pointed out, I would say Evan, CWebber and Gargron have key perspectives not to leave out from a history, protocol, development and hosting perspective, and for modern hosting perspectives and broadness of software and ways of running communities, I'd talk to Jerry and Darius.
I think all of these people have been at-mentioned elsewhere in the thread and I won't spam them further here.
Another interesting branch of the Fediverse historically is the one with Quitter, En Kompis Kompis, Freesocial and the Umeå Hackerspace, but I'm not sure where to find mmn, pettter and peer2hannes these days. If I @ them here, my server gives me the defunct Umeå Hackerspace server.
Oh, and I hope someone digs out that beautiful fedi software landscape poster from that workshop a few years ago.

@nprofile…tsag I can't claim to have studied it, but the vibe I have received is that the Mandate of Heaven has pretty much always been invoked in retrospect. If you need to invoke it to try to undermine a would-be usurper, you've pretty much already lost.
The tie to secularism may be overplayed, but I find it interesting. Either way, Chinese history seems to be one of actual meritocracy, more than any other nation-state I'm aware of.

Arnaud Bertrand (@arnaudbertrand): This is probably the single feature that makes China most unique as a civilization in human history: it is pretty much the only one where religion never had a say in political affairs.
We often wrongly believe that China's secularism came with Communism but this couldn't be more wrong. The roots are far, far more ancient than this.
Think about any other civilization - India, Persia, ancient Egypt, European civilization, the Incas: they all had a priestly class that held considerable political power. China? Never.
Never, ever? Actually China, in its very early history, had a brush with theocracy during the Shang dynasty in the 2nd millennium BC. And it is precisely this episode - or rather what came afterwards - that decisively de-linked religion from government affairs.
How so? Because around 1046 BC, the Zhou overthrew the Shang and immediately faced a big problem of legitimacy. The Shang had claimed to rule because Heaven had chosen them. If that were true, then the Zhou had just committed the ultimate act of sacrilege. How do you justify going against God’s will?
The answer the Duke of Zhou (who can thus be credited as the - perhaps unwitting - inventor of secularism) came up with was essentially to say that Heaven's mandate is not a birthright but a contract - conditional on the virtue of the ruler and good governance.
It might not sound like much but this idea completely changed the whole equation: suddenly the legitimacy of power didn’t rest on God’s will but on man’s moral judgement, on whether the ruler had virtue (德, Dé) and governed well. Which meant that, ultimately, the people - as opposed to a God - became the arbiter of whether a ruler is legitimate.
If there is one single decision that most shaped China's destiny as a civilization, it's probably this one. And, as I explain in my latest article, it ultimately shaped all of us in profound ways: through a chain of events involving Jesuit missionaries, Voltaire, and what French Enlightenment thinkers called "l'argument chinois" ("the Chinese argument"), it is this very idea that ended up secularizing Europe too and drove the Enlightenment movement.
That's the topic of my latest article: the origins of China's secularism, how it shaped three thousand years of Chinese civilization, and why - far from being a belief in nothing or an absence of belief as it's all too often depicted - it's on the contrary a faith in humanity itself.

ANDREW JARECKI: Yes, but way beyond that. I think the average person thinks, “OK, well, somebody is in prison. Maybe they’re supposed to sweep up, or they’re supposed to serve a meal or something.” I think what shocks people is that they’re farmed out, not just to the governor’s mansion. They work on road crews. They work on construction for the state. And beyond that, they’re leased out to McDonald’s and Burger King and the Hyundai parts company and the Budweiser distributorship. So it really is very —
AMY GOODMAN: And how much are they paid?
ANDREW JARECKI: Well, in the film, you see one of the people who works in sanitation is being paid $2 a day. And they’re charging the state of Alabama — the Department of Corrections is charging, you know, $10 or more per hour for these people. So it’s a very, very lucrative thing. And the other thing the men will do sometimes is go on hunger strike. And so, it’s always peaceful, and yet the way the state deals with it is always through violence.

hollycummins.com/using-yq-in-g…There was a featured snippet for “is yq available on GitHub actions,” which directed me to a marketplace installer. The yq project itself had a marketplace installer. Clearly, I needed to install it before using it. Right? My colleague George Gastaldi looked at what I’d done, and pointed out yq was available on the runners. This matters, because we try and limit our use of external, ‘non-official’ actions, for supply chain security reasons.
So I searched again to confirm, and … still found very little. To actually confirm, I had to merge and experiment. And, indeed, the GitHub runners do come with yq pre-installed. They’ve had yq since 2021.

According to Wikipedia, "finalise" is a "Non-Oxford British English standard spelling" of "finalize". If I check the OED, "finalise" redirects to the canonical "finalize".
So that means UK and US both use "finalize", right? What is a standard British spelling that is non-Oxford? Who monitors that?
It seems that most people online are sure that "finalise" is the British spelling, regardless what the OED says.
I got curious where Euro English stands on this, and searched the European Commission site. It uses "finalise" a handful of times and "finalize" zero times.
Now I'm curious where Commission English is standardized.

In Github Actions, jq comes pre-installed in the default worker. This can save you a lot of headache. Don't try to manipulate JSON with bash or Python, that's just clunky and error-prone when you can use jq instead.
I rewrote some of my own code from half a year ago. It's now shorter, more readable (if you know jq – hence the crash course), has zero quoting issues and provides better error messages.

I think I owe @nprofile…vmwq an episode, if there isn't one.

Confirmed with some posts from social.alexschroeder.ch/ that hadn't yet federated to envs and fedia:
They can search-fetch them, mastosoc cannot.
If I search on libranet (friendica), I get the profile instead of the post. But reposts from the others reach libranet, while the feed on mastosoc is still empty.

Re: mastodon.qweb.co.uk/@ric/11584…
Same result on mastodon.social. It doesn't have the third post of this thread, and searching for it doesn't fetch it.
social.alexschroeder.ch/@alex/…
Alex's server is a GoToSocial. Akkoma (pleroma.envs.net) and
IceShrimp (fedia.social) fetch it just fine.

Sometimes you forget how absolutely flabbergastingly wild Freddie Mercury's vocals are, because you've heard them all life, but then a professional and accomplished a cappella group sings a Queen song, and they need one tenor and two sopranos taking turns to have enough range and enough air to do what he did in one breath.

I was again reminded (by Legal Eagle "Bad Law Words Good") that a lot of people mix up the meaning of "e.g." and "i.e.".
When reading text out loud, pronounce "e.g." as "for example" and "i.e." as "that is", just like how you would pronounce "lbs" as "pounds". It's what I do. I think that should clear up 90% of the confusion.
... as long as you remember which one is which, of course. But I think that a lot of the confusion is because people think these are super sophisticated concepts alien to the average English reader. They're not. The pronounciations above are the literal translations, and the meaning is exactly the same.

@nprofile…hm08 Hi! I was just followed by trunkbot.
I don't mind at all, actually I'm a bit flattered. I'm just curious which trunk I'm on. I searched communitywiki.org for libranet.de and got no hits.

Sometimes people see my white face, and they get excited because they've been taking evening courses in French.
So they ask me "ça va", and I have to crush their hopes and reveal that unfortunately je ne comprends pas le français.

Any movie that isn't Avatar 3 or Back to the Past are showing like two times a day, and those two times are one time at 10 AM and one time at 3 PM.

But the iMaxes are literally all 17-ish and 21-ish.
I guess they mostly have only one iMax house, so ... if you show it at 19, the ones after and before would have to be at 23, not possible, and 15, even less commercially viable than 17.

2026-01-03 11:10:05 GMT

Avatar 3 is a 3.3 h movie, why are all the cinemas showing it at 21 and none of them at 19??
Found a non-iMax 3D at 18:30.

"Johnny Mak’s Long Arm of the Law (1984), which features in its climax arguably the most brutal and breathtaking of cat-and-mouse gunfights between criminals on the run and the Hong Kong police, shot in the real Walled City itself."

This makes me wonder: When does Koo earn more money: When he produces, sings, acts, and seven of his companies make an absolute bulldozer of a HK success like Back to the Past or Walled In, or does he actually earn more when one of his companies finances 10% of a global Hollywood "normal success" move like Vivo or The Garfield Movie?
And what about the upcoming Angry Birds 3, which will have global reach, and his own company is the one that owns the rights?

When "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In" was showing, it was the same thing. Weeks and weeks after initial release, it was still running in multiple houses in parallel, selling loads of tickets.
Hongkongers absolutely love a solid HK flick, and Louis Koo and his people know how to make one.

It is remarkable how extremely successful this film is in the home market. On release day, the biggest multiplexes in the city were showing it in every other slot, one showing starting 18:20, another 18:40 etc, the same movie running in seven houses in parallel.
It wasn't unfounded optimism either, they all sold out the majority of seats. Today, three days later, I'm looking at my local multiplex, and it's showing 12 times after 17:00, all "red" ticket levels, meaning majority sold out. Tomorrow all day it's showing 30 times; Morning shows are red, mid-day shows yellow, evening shows green (so far).

- So the TV can use Netflix.

- No, there's no WiFi here, no internet.

Yes! Running #Freelens v1.6 instead of #OpenLens v6.5 solves the problem. It has what I need out of the box, log icon is there, no extensions necessary. It even starts faster too! OpenLens notoriously takes forever to load.

Ah, it wasn't reloading the page that helped, it's that I was viewing it with Github's rendering instead of Docsify.
Add a then() handler to that Promise, to support Mermaid v10+'s async rendering:

I was reading some old project documentation today, and in an incomplete section, instead of saying "TODO", "TBD" or anything like that, the person writing the document had put "[object Promise]".
I thought that was pretty clever and funny, so I wondered who had done that. I looked at the code, and sadly that was a genuine [object Promise], a piece of dynamic content that didn't render properly.

My Samsung phone is so frustrating. Even when I'm using an alternative keyboard, the OS insists on autoincorrecting my typing. I cannot find a place to turn it off.
Apart from the annoyance where I need to watch out for it corrupting my words or inserting or moving around periods, it also means that in e.g. Termux the terminal won't receive characters until they form a full word.
All autocorrect is turned off in AnySoftKeyboard. On a Huawei, that works as expected. I've turned off all autocorrect in Samsung Keyboard, in case that would help. It doesn't.
Help?
