Matthew Conroy

I'm a mathematics teaching professor in Seattle. I'll be teaching Intro to Proofs in the coming year. I spend a lot of time making sound and visual art, often using code that I write. I worry a lot. I try to cycle a lot. I like mailing things to people. Hello!

This reminds me of this animation I made in 2002.

We planted plum trees on my street many years ago, thanks to a neighbor who spearheaded the idea. Now they bloom every spring. I usually try to get an image of, essentially, the whole street of trees, but I failed to get a decent one this year. I fall back on my even-more-standard super-close-with-no-depth-of-field shot. Spring!

#Noisevember! This one I made using a method I've been working on for a long time. It is, code-wise, one of the more complicated things I've done, but it's a bit hard to control. I used a noisy field-recording of some wind chimes for this one. Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/matthew-m-conroy/something-with-chimes

A few years ago, I was walking around my neighborhood and came across some items marked "free" on the sidewalk. One of the items was a nice, old tricycle that I thought would be perfect for my friends daughters. There was also a beautiful old pail full of nails (and a few screws). I put the pail on the tricycle and pushed it all back to my house. The pail then sat in my garage until the other day, I was taking apart an old electric toothbrush and found the strong magnet that most electric toothbrushes seem to contain. I threw this in the pail, and when I pulled it out, it brought a nice clump of nails with it. Doing this 100+ times and photographing each clump resulted in this image.

Here's my nephew Jack winning the bronze medal in speed climbing (a sport I was recently surprised to learn exists) at the collegiate nationals! https://youtu.be/HteoxOsW1O0?t=3394 #speedClimbing #climbing
