I don‘t know enough about them. The first time I saw that they signaled hanky code on TV in 1979, I was blown away. That, to me was so audacious and free. And political.

2/… I have always loved this introduction of counter-culture to prime-time TV. I loved how the village people almost innocently put the gay stereotypes to the mainstream. As an outsider, it seems liberating to me.
Felipe Rose, the Native American, is of Native American and Puerto Rican decent. He is also gay.
So is Alex Briley, the GI.
The Village People of today will be performing for Donald Trump's inauguration, and Victor Willes says: "It's not about politics".

These are the Village People, on American Bandstand 1979.
Glenn Hughes. the "Biker", is wearing chaps and a black hanky in his left pocket.
In 1979, it was not common knowledge that this indicated a "BDSM Top". Hughes knew, because he was a patron of a Gay BDSM Bar and Sex Club.
