Pete the Gopher Keeper

Retired and living the (tech) life here in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, UK! I run a web server, but my pride and joy is my gopher server which gets fed fresh files practically every day. It's the past, kids, but more importantly, the future! Also interest in bread making, coffee, beer, wire fox terriers, MeshCore, paganism (pantheism rules)

I love the whole #cyberdeck concept but havent built one yet. However with all the #ageverification stuff going on right now i cant help thinking that if we're to stay online in the next few years the cyberdeck will be the only way. Everyone else will be enslaved by their #Apple #google devices but i dont intend to be part of that, and neither I suspect will you!

@nprofile…33pr based in the UK I can definitely agree with this. Speaking for the UK, if you read between the lines, all this stuff gave up the pretence being "for the children" long ago, it might be better if the Government just came out and told us they want to track our every move. The majority of people won't even look up from their doom-scrolling and at least those of us in a position to object will know what we're up against.

@nprofile…33pr Actually, do you remember the Clipper Chip? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip
That was put in place quickly and proved very unpopular (with users) - hopefully "they" won't think of a similar option which could be included in devices without us even knowing.

It seems like the Debian Edu mailing list is talking about Linux becoming age-verification API module compliant: https://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2026/03/msg00005.html
Not what I wanted to read at 5am...

Hey @nprofile…qxzq ! I have just discovered your site. Are you planning to do a tablet version? I am searching for a *genuine* Linux tablet, preferably 8inch but would also look at larger versions.

Following on from the part couple of days of Rediscovering Perl, I was honestly surprised how much I'd forgotten after being retired for 3 years! 30+ years of getting paid to do #Perl every day, then .. nothing. Now I suddenly needed to hit the ground running again and found it challenging. The best bit though is that I saved nearly all the code I'd written and was able to instantly refer to working code :0080: I'm also really impressed that I can run all this stuff on small, portable devices - how times have changed!
