Thanks, Tim! We did an out and back from North Twin Trailhead on Haystack Rd and weren't initially sure if we'd include Galehead or not. We were glad we did as we weren't sure what other routes would take us there in a future hike and were feeling good at South Twin and were so close.
That descend (+ climb back up!) between South Twin and Galehead is indeed grueling. Knees felt it a little on the way down but mostly I think it set us up for more strain later in the hike on our way back.
I think this marks twice we've been on the same ridge on the same day - one day we'll probably cross paths!

Apple over estimates this a bit as I think elevation gain was closer to 5500ft but this was a big hike for my friend and I - our biggest of the year. Our legs, feet, and knees were feeling it the last 3-4 miles. I was out like a light when I went to bed. 😂
Thankfully my knees are not feeling it much today, mostly sore calves and legs. I continue to work towards bullet proof knees. A ways to go, but a lot of progress the past 2 years.

This hike was a full day adventure. 11 hours out and back from the trailhead and 5 hrs driving. Perfect weather, great views. Peaceful but pushing our bodies hard to do 3 summits. Lots of other happy hikers on trail. Nothing but the majesty of nature all day. Simply wonderful.

on adventures like that one his feelings often change over the course of the day. At Jackson summit it was “best day ever”. He summited fine but legs got tired in the long descent, which is pretty rocky and slow going. A nice dinner afterwards helped bring things positive again. He’s not hiked in a while but I think he’ll be up for more if he gets some regularity.

We hiked the Webster Jackson loop, first up to Webster and then to Jackson and back down. It rained overnight and early morning but cleared up mostly by early afternoon.
Great weather and a healthy amount of fellow hikers were out on the trail.
This is rated as one of the easiest NH 4000 footers but it has great views and a nice waterfall, too (I’ll post that Sunday).
I’m happy I was able to get at least 2 solid hikes in on my week off, and even happier that my son accompanied me 😊

yes - and the top half to 2/3 of old bridle path is tough on the knees. I know it’s considered the safer way down but I find it tedious. When it opens up later the views are quite nice though.
I could have tried the tramway path since I had to use overflow parking with the shuttle today, but I wasn’t thinking about it.
Still not where I want my knees to be but it seems I didn’t lose all of my progress. This was probably my longest hike since Oct. hopefully weather permits another hiking outing or two next week but I think I’ll be lucky or get one with the heat and tstorms

The backstory is that my PTO started after a bunch of missed hike opportunities and this was a perfect weather day, followed by bad weather most of my vacation. 🤦‍♂️So I decided after midnight last night that I needed to do this hike and committed to it.
I got very little sleep but had a blast, as I’ve wanted to revisit this hike for 2 years now. Franconia ridge is a magical place.
Even better news, 2 years ago this hike murdered my knees. I was concerned as my left knee started getting upset during the ascent but I made it the entire rest of the hike without it becoming a problem I’ll probably add a video to the thread tomorrow. 2 / ?

Ugh, what a slog of a week - I just signed off work to begin a week of PTO, though. Yolo white mountains hike tomorrow on 3 hours sleep? I sure need it. (sleep, and mountains - the conflict is real). I still need to pack...fortunately packing has become pretty quick with everything grouped in bags.
After tomorrow, my whole vacation week looks like thunderstorms :( :( :( so I need to get my hike in if I can wing it.

Whoa - thanks for sharing. I’m glad it worked out and that the tree fell the way it did and it was usable to escape. I imagine depending on circumstance that could be quite scary solo. As you described, escaping deep snow in snowshoes could be very difficult depending on circumstance. I previously read a spruce trap story from sectionhiker - even someone that experienced could be in real danger.

Very muddy and wet the lower half - lots of water runoff. Really only a few sections of ice remaining, microspikes were plenty. I swapped them on and off 5-10 times. I’m not sure I saw a dry rock today. Tons of fun, just slow!

microspikes yesterday, but I wish I brought snowshoes. The snow was very soft combined with many hikers sliding down the monorail (butt slide) leaving very little traction available on descent. And of course the day I had (but did not wear) my gaiters was the day I needed them the most 😂 I post holed alongside the monorail quite a lot to safely descend.

Up on the ridge, the snow is so high and the trees are bending over from the weight of the snow, that you’re frequently ducking under the trees. Some of them required kneeling to get under - going around was only sometimes the right option. This is further what made reaching Willey grueling, even though it would’ve only been an extra mile each way.

This was my first hike in the white mountains in 5 months due to an injury in October. I’m still building up my endurance after 6-8 weeks of no hiking. My legs definitely felt it, but it went really well and my soreness today is only moderate. My watch said this was 9.5 miles / 3500ft or so, but AllTrails said it should be less. 🤷‍♂️ it’s hard to tell in the winter as paths go on and off the trail. Either way, it was a wonderful hike with great weather!

The route we chose gave us the option of attempting a 3rd 4000 footer (Willey), but the trail past Mt Field was heavily drifted and not broken out yet. One group of 6 or so attempted it, but we opted to forego it and get to the car before dark. Also, as the first big snowshoeing we’d done in almost a full year, we didn’t want to push ourselves too hard. It was moderately cold, around 17F / -8C before windchill. Standing around for 15 minutes one would get cold quickly if injured or exhausted. 3 / ?

I haven’t personally felt the need yet but it is a bit precarious depending on conditions. I don’t like descending that section snowy/icy/wet in the dark. Actually when there’s real ice I feel safer than when there’s free unpacked snow people are sliding down, or wet rock in summer.
As long as white cross isn’t too icy, I think a lot of people do as you suggest. Cross has a lot more water on it so actually needs crampons more at times. I’ve had them advise me at the store to not go on white cross twice now (either not down, or not without crampons), but never on dot. 🤷‍♂️
Ultimately it’s up to your personal comfort and preference. One of these times I’ll try cross in winter.

Thanks - that section is just before “the chute” and is probably the main semi sketchy part of white dot in winter depending on conditions. Full concentration for that section.
On your note about traction before, the rangers are generally pretty good about giving condition reports over the phone and also warning in person. On sun they recommended against descending via white cross, for example.

It was cold - teens in Fahrenheit and very windy at the summit - enough that I did not take any photos from the summit, as my hands would’ve gotten frigid quickly and I forgot to restock hot hands if I dropped out of my winter gauntlets.
This is the same hike as last week but with slightly more snow. My legs felt better and recovered better than last week, which is a positive sign. My goal is to do a hike in the white mountains later this month, if weather and schedule align properly. 2 / ?

For Monadnock, white dot is definitely the most traveled so I’d recommend that. I’ve done it a dozen or more times in winter and microspikes have always been more than sufficient. Even with a foot of snow I’ve also not seen it need snowshoes yet. Other trails there the conditions vary a lot more, even white cross needs crampons at times.
There hasn’t been a lot of precipitation up there this winter, either, so there’s a lot of bare rock still. I’m going again tomorrow so I’ll see how this week’s snow has changed things.

Microspikes. Not much ice currently, but we wore them the whole hike. Snow was pretty shallow, a few inches at most except for some drifts at the summit.
Chilly at the top but not bad outside the wind…

Yes, I opted for a lower elevation hike at Wachusett as temps were too cold for me for exposure at Monadnock. There is a 4 mile loop I enjoy here in fresh snow. It was a good workout for my current fitness/recovery. Foot hasn’t had any issues my last 2-3 hikes - not 100% but I can do 4-5 miles without any setbacks now. Still hoping for a short hike in whites sometime next month. My feet get sore more easily but that’s minor.

I think it was around 20F at the base yesterday. Definitely Nalgene weather now that it’s cold enough for water to freeze easily. Harrington trail is a treat in this type of weather.

It’s been almost 3 months since my last hike of Monadnock after injuring my toe - it felt so good to be back up there today!
It was cold and socked in, but I had plenty of layers available. There were less hikers than usual, but still a good amount.
Flurries the whole day were a nice treat and definitely added to the beauty of the mountain.
I figured it would take me around 3 hours of movement in my current fitness, and it did. My toe felt good, maybe not even any discomfort today? And 3x the distance and elevation of my practice hikes leading up to it. I should be able to do this weekly again now and then work towards double, with a goal of white mountains in another month.
I expect my legs to be a bit sore tomorrow - my feet are - it’s the longest I’ve walked or hiked in months.

I took my second hike (post injury) on Friday and it went pretty well. Slight toe discomfort during but no flare up afterwards. If weather permits, I’ll take a longer hike on New Year’s Day or next weekend. Progress. Then I need to get my hiking legs back on full gear for snowshoeing later in season #hiking

Update from Sunday’s short hike. My legs are miraculously still in hiking shape and had only minor soreness, although I’m sure with less endurance, but sadly my toe discomfort worsened and persisted for several days. Even pangs of sharper pain (when not on my feet at all), which hadn’t happened in weeks.
Further hiking will probably need to wait a bit longer. I’ll continue enjoying all the photos folks are posting of mountains.

This was a short (1.7 mile, 600ft) hike in light snow. My first after breaking a toe back in October.
My toe was fine on ascent and had mild discomfort on descent (final 1/3 of the hike). I’d say that’s success. I think I’m ready for more of these and gradually ramping up distance and elevation.
Legs felt good, we’ll see how they feel tomorrow after my gap in exercise.
The tough part will be finding days to hike with the early winter sunsets and work.

it’s getting better. Normal walking around the house or office in a half boot/sandal doesn’t bother it but toe still gets unhappy with more use or barefoot. I’m going to start testing the waters more this week ahead of some time off. Last I checked (~1 week ago) a regular shoe was still uncomfortable to have on

I need to find something. I don’t have a stationary exercise bike but I’ve been considering a gym membership and this may make me commit. I need to do something before (reasonably) December.
I feel like the pedal motion might be odd heel driven. I did test and notice that squatting was comfortable so maybe I’ll do a lot of squats and hold some weights.

I walked outdoors a third of a mile yesterday in an air walker ankle boot with no pain. That’s progress, I guess. Toe recovery is certainly an exercise in patience. I’m seeing marked improvement in how my foot and toe look and feel at the 2 week mark but I still have to take it very slow.

Whelp - I broke one of my toes last night. No mountains for me this weekend and likely for a few weeks :/ send pictures of mountains.
It’s frustrating to lose the pace I’ve kept most of the year, but there’s not much I can do about it except focus on healing fully so I can get back out there. It’s such a warm weekend here, too.

I’ve only been to Wyoming once but it was nearly 20 years ago before my appreciation of nature really kicked in. This is a place I must visit - it looks like a wonderful trip.
