🤖 RoboSats v0.5.3 is out! 🚀
🟠 The main change on this version is the much improved F2F feature by @KoalaSat .
The app now allows robots to add a location for face-to-face cash trades. The book page will display a map with all F2F orders.
To best protect robots privacy, the exact location of the order is slightly randomized (just in case someone is reckless enough to pin their own house!). The location is randomized in a radius of ~15 Km. This means it's not possible to be precise, and the exact location for the f2f trade can only be shared on the encrypted chat. Note that enabling high-resolution maps can leak your IP to external tiling servers if you are not using Tor Browser.
Of course, adding a geolocation tag to your order is only useful for face-to-face cash payment method. You can completely disregard this feature if you do not want to use this payment method.

Ah, seems I (social media volunteer) was a bit too optimistic with the current progress 😅😅, see an answer from a dev: It's working at a low capacity at the moment, and will keep runing this way for a little time. The LND node of RoboSats behaves very unstable. It will take over a week until we can fully replace the node and be back at 100%.

Simplex is kind of weird. I'm still figuring out how it works myself 😅 my understanding is that the group host device must be online to allow new users to join the group. So it could've been that there was a bad timing that the device was off line for a moment when you tried to connect. By now, it *should* be connected.
Not to mention, sometimes a message is not visible to another user, which I guess is an issue due to large group sizes (you'll notice it takes a while to send a message in the RoboSats group). But its private 😁 you can use an anonymous identity to chat in the RoboSats group

At some point when you send to cold storage (on chain) from buying sats on RoboSats (Lightning), you will have to swap out and incur on chain fee (and whatever swap service you use).
Using only cellphone, a good setup would be the RoboSats app, Blixt wallet for Lightning, and then using RoboSats to swap out at low fees or use another swap service provider with low fees like swap.diamond hands.technology to send your funds to cold storage. There are other wallets that users have reported success with, like Phoenix wallet and OBW to name a couple

If you do not see an existing order in your local currency, make one! There can only be demand if people make orders!
But yea sometimes for certain currencies there is low liquidity. The only remedy is to tell others in your locale to take their money/liquidity to RoboSats instead of a typical exchange. (You can entice them by saying sellers get extra bang for their sats by selling on P2P exchanges with premiums!!)

Perhaps a little bit of all that contributes to higher premiums on gift cards!
Physical gift card code exchange is probably the most private method, but similarly its so private that its hard to defend yourself in a dispute because there's no definitive way to prove you gave your peer an authentic gift card code that hasn't been used already. Thus why e-gift card with burner email is recommended since you get email receipt proving your peer received the gift card code (but obviously not as private and people still use physical gift card code all the time without issue)
If more people used RoboSats as a sort of P2P bitrefill.. Then a circular economy of sorts could take hold where buyers stacking sats provide sellers with gift cards they can use for their daily living purposes. Rinse and repeat 🙂

It certainly speaks to the degree of privacy a majority of end-users are willing to seek. End-users tend to gravitate towards convenient (albeit not private) fiat payment methods. There are lots of gift card options which are generally more private but its really not ideal for the receiver of fiat since they can only spend the funds in one place. Thus why gift card options tend to gravitate toward mostly Amazon where you can buy almost anything from one site lol
But there is always one rule that persists: the only prerequisite to having your bank app account closed is by having one in the first place 😁

It would be nice to negotiate the premium on an order before proceeding to the P2P chat stage! Keep in mind with the following response that I'm just a humble social media volunteer and am speaking from my understanding of previous discussions with Reckless_Satoshi:
I think an overarching concern when considering how peers communicate is protecting the end-users from fraud. By allowing P2P communications before the escrow is provided, it could (in worst case scenario) lead to attempted scams. A clever scammer might convince or persuade their peer to exchange fiat in an unsafe manner during this pre-escrow negotiation process. It could be as simple as persuading the peer to make the BTC<->FIAT trade off platform for whatever scammy reason, which makes the RoboSats dispute resolution process impossible when comms move off RoboSats. All trade comms with your peer should be kept within RoboSats' E2E encrypted P2P chat because you can export these logs and send to RoboSats staff for a dispute mediatior to review in case of attempted fraud. We want to keep the order flow such that peers only communicate after the seller provides the escrow.
Now, with that in mind, it might be possible that the "negotiation" process before exchanging fiat consists of submitting a new, proposed premium number without any additional context (peers ONLY exchange a number, no words or sentences for scammers to try and explain their tricks to a naive user). For example, you see a premium of 6% on a bitcoin sell order and you submit a negotiation number of "5%" and your peer can accept, decline, or counter offer with another number, like eBay kind of. In that way, end-users are protected and comms prior to submitting escrow are minimized.
Regardless, its a fun idea and worth discussing in more detail in the RoboSats public dev chat group on Matrix! Do you mind posting the idea there too, so others (like devs smarter than me) can see and comment? Thanks for taking time to think about how RoboSats could be made even better!!
P.S. there is a nostr-based exchange in the works, one such notable example is "Mostro" by the same developer who made lnp2pbot! Which RoboSats is heavily inspired by lnp2pbot!

Ah I see. I agree holding invoices could be done to attack the network, but RoboSats' use of hodl invoices is quite a ways away from being considered "malicious". This concern has actually been discussed at length in the RoboSats public chat/support groups. Indeed, the hodl invoice has some drawbacks but its the tech that makes RoboSats work.
This method (seller locks escrow toward RoboSats experimental coordinator node) is, at the moment, the safest approach to ensuring peers hold up to their end of the deal since a direct hold invoice between seller and buyer has yet to be practically demonstrated with conventional wallets.

If you want complete privacy in regards to how much you own, don't buy on an exchange that records this information. Mixing coins doesn't change the institution's record-keeping of how much BTC you've withdrawn from them.

Anonymity is only possible if you use a truly private payment method. While CashApp is a possible (and popular) payment method on RoboSats, it is not very private and does not guarantee safe trading. My understanding is that CashApp allows you to use an anonymous username handle but there is risk of charge back by your peer. So a more private and irreversible payment method is recommended like gift cards, for example.
RoboSats let's you be as anonymous as you want! Every new trade on RoboSats is a new identity (never re-use the same identity more than once). So the anonymity really comes from the fact that RoboSats requires 0 personal information to make trades and the fiat payment method is done in E2E encrypted chat with only your peer.
So that's why it's recommended to also use a payment method that is private because your peer is the only individual who could "find you out" because of your payment method. To an outside observer (like your fiat rail institution), it would appear you sent a random individual money unrelated to anything bitcoin. Just be sure to not include something like "bitcoin" or "robosats" in the payment comment field haha 😁

You can ask a friend to pay your fidelity bond and, when you successfully complete your first trade, the bond unlocks and your friend gets their sats back!
Or, you can fund the bond using your SATs because the bond invoice is no way correlated/linked to the payout invoice. Just be sure to not mix your private bitcoin with your identity-linked bitcoin.
Finally, you can always earn sats in some form or fashion! Users reported success with apps like Stacker News or Fountain... Albeit it takes time to amass enough for a small bond. You can also contribute to the RoboSats github and potentially earn sats!
But for context, the bond is necessary as it is your "skin in the game" that proves you won't cheat. Similarly, your peer submits a bond of the same size too; so they are also disincentivized to cheat. While those payment methods aren't very private, any fiat payment method is allowed on RoboSats, see our docs: https://learn.robosats.com/docs/payment-methods/
It is recommended to use a payment method that is irreversible (without risk of charge back) and that does not require your real identity or banking info. Gift cards are usually the most private method, albeit more inconvenient and sometimes carries a premium because of that inconvenience.
Just depends how much you value your privacy 🙂 ultimately, RoboSats is as private as you make it.

Nice use of the stats charts!! That's a great clarification, the expected premium will vary depending on your currency and the supply/demand imbalance of that currency (USD is more liquid than, say, RUB)
Also, keep in mind, the fiat payment method can command a higher premium if it is more private whereas less private payment methods (which are the majority unfortunately) tend to have lower premiums because more sellers are accepting those payment methods.

Duckduckgo + Orbot appears to be successful for iOS users! It's not a RoboSats app, but at least could be used as an alternative instead 👍
Probably will not get around to iOS any time soon, dev efforts are focused on the RoboSats "federation" (decentralization) upgrade right now!

Sorry to hear that 😢 Well, at least the same mistake won't be made twice 😅
Indeed, the BTC<->FIAT market rate will typically come with a premium and a positive premium is above that rate, whereas a negative premium is below that rate (AKA a "discount")
In future, you could try explaining to your peer in the P2P chat stage that you took this order before realizing the premium was negative, and hopefully your peer would understand so that you both could collaboratively cancel the order. Collab cancel means your bond isn't forfeited.

The goal of the Telegram chat was to make an easily accessible location to ask questions and seek help in a public forum. So from a community forum perspective, its easier and more accessible (wider audience available and existing user base) as well as an ability to sufficiently moderate community group chats.
The reality is also that casual (nontechnical) users who need the most help are disinclined to download a dedicated app to ask for help even if its a more private option. These casual users would more likely already have Telegram.
But regardless of privacy aspects, the fact the group chat owner account is currently irrecoverable is a different issue with services like Telegram.

B/c successful trades aren't visible and untaken orders expire in 24hr, first-timers might take one glance at the order book and assume weak liquidity.
Trade turnover is actually quite high (orders get taken often) and there exists a highly liquid market!

Great question! Probably 95% of users who open a dispute do not actually have fraud, but were miscommunication with their peer, the payment method itself, how the order flow works, etc.
Understandably, first-timers are extra jittery and are quick to open a dispute if a peer hasn't replied right away (give your peer time and be patient!).
Last time I saw a hard figure, it was about a year ago and there were 8000 total orders and 30 disputes had been initiated where only one(!) was identified as attempted fraud. Very very rare. Vast majority of peers just want to honestly stack private and P2P 👍

LN "hodl" invoices are the tech that makes RoboSats work!
It "locks" funds in your wallet for the bond and escrow that "unlocks" based on your order state (successful, lost dispute, etc.)

The best I can do is reason with users to opt in to buy/sell P2P and value privacy in lieu of using anti-privacy exchanges. This way will bring more peers and, of course, more liquidity/volume 👍

Indeed, the squiggle arrow is the swap in/out feature. Using RoboSats, you can make or take an order to swap in or out of Lightning. Swap destinations can include on chain, on chain using Stowaway, Liquid, RBTC, etc.
