Last Notes npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann #ClimateDiary We had a terrible thunderstorm here last night, with several lightning strikes really close to us - and this house 1.2m away was struck and caught fire. Hardly anyone has lightning/earthing rods in the UK. We don’t, I think! Meanwhile worrying about my 83yo mother in 40°C Berlin. She is ok I think but no fans or AC. We are all so unprepared. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann Thinking about “civicmindedness”: npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann #ClimateDiary. I am marking and marking - at the moment, blogs students wrote for Urban Political Ecology. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann I have nothing original or insightful to add but also don’t want to just stay silent when the US attacks its third country this holiday season (Nigeria and Iran before). The attack on #Venezuela is a bloody coup, breaking all international law. It should be condemned by all other leaders but many (Starmer) will not do that, of course. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann #ClimateDiary more worrying research npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann This week i had a couple of conversations about #Gaza with well-meaning, nice people in which it transpired that they still knew virtually nothing about things that happened before Oct 7. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann Most people across 24 surveyed countries have negative views of Israel and Netanyahu npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann URGENT: The proscription of #PalestineAction is being voted on in the UK parliament today. Please write to your MP now and urge them to vote against it! I just did (in btw making packed lunch, assembling school clothes etc, so a bit rushed) . You can just click here npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann Just do want to say briefly that Bob Vylan saying “Death to the IDF” was an important, strategic and, yes, brave thing to do. Of course it pushed the limit of what is acceptable, was shocking to hear at Glastonbury (i was shocked!), but that was the point. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann Very proud of my husband James Hampshire, who received the Bernard Crick prize this evening (at the Orwell Prize Ceremony) for an article in Political Quarterly on UK immigration policy since Brexit. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann There are just too many awful things happening in the world, all at once. And in between everything else, the horrors in #Gaza go on and on. Each of these deaths a total tragedy. npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann Says it all, really npub1p99uvr2yxrvsqcutdl88qpyfrte4p93vdj2kvsdjhup7c42r7vzsrld43u Pauline von Hellermann How is it even possible that this is happening during #Christmas and we here in Europe just get on with celebrating. Another case of our sense of normality being radically shifted.A year ago this headline would have seemed awful, impossible to anyone; but now this is where we are at. #Gaza
