Specifically, on the question of bias, and whether it's possible to eliminate personal bias and even more fundamentally, whether it's even desirable to do so were it possible. The objectivity of reason can, perhaps even must, be united to the subjectivity of love in order to be fully open to the truth, which , in Christianity, is not a proposition but a Person. The Regensburg address may be one of the most important pieces of Christian philosophy in the 21st century to date. It literally got people killed.... https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/library/regensburg-university-address-12-september--pope-benedict-xvi-6183 npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha This is a high view of human reason that is open to the possibility of knowing truth. It is admirable in the nihilistic culture we live in. How much postmodernism have you studied? Even more importantly, have you spent any time with Benedict XVI and the Regensburg address? npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Well, yes, within "reach" so thanks for taking that super literally har har npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Would love to have it back as before npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha What is the correct response to being at an all time low motivation #asknostr npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Welcome... big fan of the Dude here 🙋♂️ npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha still happening unfortunately npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha I have one account only and have this same problem npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha #quotestr #nevent1q…27g7 npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha I learned yesterday that St Boniface was martyred with 46 others by bandits intercepting them on the road to Frisia with liturgical books. My city built a new airport a year ago that demolished the 1960s "cutting edge" jet age shamrock-style terminals that allowed near instantaneous access to the gates from the drop off point. In its place is a big, boxy TSA theatre, and a parking garage attached. Despite the billions poured into it, they didn't think to put in a pedestrian bridge so that all vehicle traffic through the terminal didn't need to be stopped by a guy with a whistle and a reflective vest every single time someone wanted to cross to or from the parking garage. Hideous. Thank you for reading. I feel better. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Works great with GrapheneOS ⚡💯 npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Finding consistent, regular time to set aside for prayer is also really helpful. It is as much about quieting oneself to be able to listen as it is speaking about what's on the mind and heart, though it is that, too. I highly recommend a chapter of the Gospel of Mark per day with a simple expression of desire to get to know Jesus as he is, without substituting our own prejudices or letting our pain stoke our anxieties. I'm praying for you now, brother! Two things in this world do I hate. One is talking behind the back, and the other is lice. So you should know what I do think of you.”
The only sounds when my mother stopped were the crackling of wood and the hushing of snow.
“You are a lot of cowards to talk against my husband,” my mother said with a full voice. “He has done nothing against you and he never would and you know it well. He is Superintendent of the colliery now because every man will have his reward for working, and that is his. And for you to think he is with the owners because he has had his reward is not only nonsense but downright wickedness. How some of you can sit in the same Chapel with him I cannot tell. But there is one thing more I will say and that is this. If harm do come to my Gwilym, I will found out the men and I will kill them with my hands. And that I will swear by God Almighty. And there will be no Hell for me. Nobody will go to Hell for killing lice.”
“Mama,” Davy called from the back of the rock.
My mother turned round to look for Davy, but she could not see him at first.
“I am not your mother,” she said, “when you are with these. You are lice with them. And if your father comes to harm, you shall be the first to go.”
Davy came out of the darkness to go to my mother but she turned away and started to stumble down the rock. I ran round to help her find her footway, and Davy stood at the top watching in quiet. There was low talking from the men and not a sound else, and indeed if ever I heard the voice of shame, then it was, while my mother was crying as she felt her way down. It has been a challenging historical lesson provided by a great friend, Dr. Ezekiel Stear of Auburn University. His persistent line of investigation throughout his career has been in search of an answer to the question: “How did Mexico become Mexico?” His abundant knowledge has significantly altered my understanding of the “primitive” civilization that the Spanish evangelized in the 16th century, as well as the real collaboration and mutual respect that existed between the Nauha and the Franciscans in certain parts of New Spain—something approaching an ideal. The possibility of significant gain represents an incentive to help motivate those who take these risks to take them both prudently and courageously, and to persevere in the face of extreme difficulty and distraction. That is no small thing. A dictum in this respect would be: Show me the incentives, and I'll show you the outcome. Bitcoiners are serving a noble good and the possibility of monetary gain is one factor among many important factors that helps to incentivize what would otherwise be unimaginably difficult for most people. Stated by @nprofile…qw43 in more forceful terms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCLt7oUl43I I also think the idea of intrinsic value is a distraction in this discussion. Correct me if I'm wrong: in the sense you're using it here, "intrinsic value" means "good for something other than being used as money, and therefore [more] free from speculative abuse". But the claim is that bitcoin is a new form of money that creates digital scarcity through the binding of real world energy expenditure to an immutable distributed ledger in order to secure it from attack and recalibrate the accuracy of the price signal. Digital scarcity is such a profound innovation that it's hard to make a comparison to other monetary phenomena. "Intrinsic value" is something like a skeuomorph of the prior forms of money that were necessarily physical. A skeuomorph is "a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original." But bitcoin is innovative precisely because it eliminates the need to bind scarcity to physicality, offering pure scarcity in the digital realm by the capture of energy through proof-of-work. I also think ProtonPass is worth checking out. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Good questions. Off the cuff, I'd say that one's reasons for learning about and holding bitcoin may vary. But the intentions behind the creation of Bitcoin obviously draw on moral sources, especially the devastating effects of unsound money on society and the need to separate money from state. (See Hülsmann's THE ETHICS OF MONEY PRODUCTION.) This in my view is the determinant for the morality of holding Bitcoin even as it is treated as a speculative get-rich scheme by some... which seems far less prevalent among bitcoiners than it does in the spinoff communities that are deeply scammy. By no means is it absent. In the end, I would hold Bitcoin even if it didn't appreciate massively in value. Its qualities as sound money and a savings vehicle for the masses-- an open, permissionless, trustless bearer asset, that cannot be corrupted by any central authority, seems like good enough of a deal to stake one's wealth on in the hopes that it can address the deep and hidden injustices of the current system. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha It is so easy to be wrong—and to persist in being wrong—when the costs of being wrong are paid by others. And, outside the huge investment company umbrella, one of the best smaller investment vehicles is farmafield.com (disclaimer: I know the owners and have invested with them in the past) Were it up to me, 100% of my savings would go into bitcoin. I have come to believe more and more in the "voting" power of holding bitcoin and focusing on living rather than becoming a part time investor doing research into abstruse company filings and completely out of one's depth: a point first conveyed quite powerfully to me by Saifedean. But barring the possibility of that particular allocation ratio, yes, finding an ethical investment vehicle is just not optional. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha It brings me sorrow... #nevent1q…fmcp npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha I take that back, Coracle does have a way to use AUTH for relays in the App Settings 🙆♂️ npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha ⚡🔥 npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha A setting in Nostur allowed me to turn on AUTH for my paid relays and we are back in business, connecting just fine now. That said, tribes (banding together with the like minded) do serve a purpose. The real trouble happens when tribes grow far beyond a human scale. Decentralized tribes, localism, and wide distribution of property would be a very effective solvent to the reductive, two party Kabuki dance we are now living through. How to manage that in a society as tech logically advanced as ours? No idea. But if it gets us thinking about our cities and neighborhoods over these vast global agglomerates, only good can come of it. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha On desktop, Coracle has turned my head big time. Few of us fall so neatly into any category. And I think he would also acknowledge there are more than two basic visions of reality, in the sense he's using that word. I think what's helpful is that we each tend towards one overall vision and that is much more influential on our political positions than the particular policies in question. As our intellectual landscape gets ever more impoverished we tend to oversimplify into these crude alliances that tend to miss the point of what's really at stake. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha https://image.nostr.build/6b3e6b7a0591a7e1f7fd02ede6eef7934af7ae8fe25e554f21b04709ac3ce16d.jpg Read the whole thing: https://www.firstthings.com/article/2023/08/the-rise-of-antihumanism npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha Testing this new share function from Tidal: https://tidal.com/browse/track/106550263?u Wir Christenleut haben jetzund Freud, weil uns zu Trost Christus ist Mensch geboren, hat uns erlöst. Channel splicing, etc. npub1paxyej8f8fh57ny0fr5w2mzp9can9nkcmeu5jaerv68mhrah7t8s795ky6 Father Nick Blaha I think you are on to something, but it’s been happening since long before our time. Have you ever read any Thomas Sowell? He was on to this in the 80s, and traces its origins back centuries: “A Conflict of Visions (1987) represents Sowell’s best effort to put his ideas in dialogue with their opposite. He begins the book by observing a strange fact: people predictably line up on opposite sides of political issues that seemingly have nothing in common. For instance, knowing someone’s position on climate change somehow allows you to predict their views on taxing the rich, gun control, and abortion. It’s tempting to dismiss this as mere political tribalism. But Sowell contends that more is at work: that there are two fundamental ways of thinking about the social world, two sets of basic assumptions about human nature, and two conflicting ‘visions,’ from which most political disagreements follow. He names these the constrained vision and the unconstrained vision.” It is the kind of insight that helps to explain the things you are noticing.
